The Church Fathers compared the Day of the Lord to a solar day (see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/faustina-and-the-day-of-the-lord\/\">Faustina, and the Day of the Lord<\/a><\/em>). A question then is, <em>how close are we to midnight<\/em>, the darkest part of the Day\u2014the advent of Antichrist? Although the &#8220;antichrist&#8221; cannot be restricted to one single individual, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10692_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10692_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>As far as the antichrist is concerned, we have seen that in the New Testament he always assumes the lineaments of contemporary history. He cannot be restricted to any single individual. A period of lawlessness or apostasy from the faith.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">II. The rise of a global totalitarianism<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">III. The implementation of a global system of commerce<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">IV. The rise of false prophets<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">V. Global persecution of the Church<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Jesus warned us not to fall asleep, to watch and to pray\u2014not in fear, but in <em>holy courage<\/em> as we see the signs of the &#8220;end times&#8221; emerge. For as the Day of the Lord unfolds, there are many elements that will take people by surprise\u2014some who, in fact, will have lost their opportunity to be in God&#8217;s camp because they have hardened their hearts, and fallen asleep.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. When people are saying, peace and security, then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (1 Thess 5:2-3)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So let&#8217;s briefly look at each of the five points, which give us an indication of the proximate time we are living in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">WHAT TIME IS IT?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>I. Apostasy<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">&#8220;Apostasy&#8221; means a great falling away from the faith. In fact, St. Paul warns his readers against those who were saying and writing things&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition&#8230; (2 Thess 2:2-3)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So, <em>what time is it?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Who can fail to see that society is at the present time, more than in any past age, suffering from a terrible and deep-rooted malady <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Smoldering_wick.jpg\" width=\"201\" height=\"218\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>which, developing every day and eating into its inmost being, is dragging it to destruction? You understand, Venerable Brethren, what this disease is\u2014apostasy from God\u2026 When all this is considered there is good reason to fear lest this great perversity may be as it were a foretaste, and perhaps the beginning of those evils which are reserved for the last days; and that there may be already in the world the \u201cSon of Perdition\u201d of whom the Apostle speaks.<\/strong> \u2014POPE ST. PIUS X, <em>E Supremi<\/em>, Encyclical On the Restoration of All Things in Christ, n. 3, 5; October 4th, 1903<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Apostasy, the loss of the faith, is spreading throughout the world and into the highest levels within the Church.<\/strong> \u2014POPE PAUL VI, Address on the Sixtieth Anniversary of the Fatima Apparitions, October 13, 1977<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">Pius X said that in 1903. What would he say if he were alive today? Perhaps what Pius XI said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-family: Hoefler Text; font-size: small;\"><strong>And thus, even against our will, the thought rises in the mind that now those days draw near of which Our Lord prophesied: \u201cAnd because sin has abounded, the love of many shall grow cold\u201d <\/strong>(Matt. 24:12). \u2014POPE PIUS XI, <em>Miserentissimus Redemptor<\/em>, Encyclical on Reparation to the Sacred Heart, n. 17\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>II. Global Totalitarianism<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The prophet Daniel, St. John, and the early Church Fathers were unanimous in declaring that there is going to come a global regime that will trample over the sovereignty and rights of many nations and peoples.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: courier new,courier;\">After this, in the visions of the night I saw a fourth beast, terrifying, horrible, and of extraordinary strength; it had great iron teeth with which it devoured and crushed, and it trampled with its feet what was left. (Daniel 7:7)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">So, <em>what time is it?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">With tragic consequences, a long historical process is reaching a turning-point. The process which once led to discovering the idea of <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/euthanasia2_000.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"172\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/>&#8220;human rights&#8221;\u2014rights inherent in every person and prior to any Constitution and State legislation\u2014is today marked by a surprising contradiction&#8230; the very right to life is being denied or trampled upon\u2026 This is the sinister result of a relativism which reigns unopposed: the &#8220;right&#8221; ceases to be such, because it is no longer firmly founded on the inviolable dignity of the person, but is made subject to the will of the stronger part. In this way democracy, contradicting its own principles, effectively moves towards a form of totalitarianism.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II, <em>Evangelium Vitae, \u201cThe Gospel of Life\u201d<\/em>, n. 18, 20 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">The battle between the culture of life and culture of death today is really a battle between the Gospel and the anti-gospel, the Woman of Revelation vs. the dragon, and eventually, Christ vs. the Antichrist who seeks to impose the culture of death world-wide <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10692_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10692_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-great-culling\/\">The Great Culling<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_10692_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10692_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0 by an atheisitic and materialistic view of the world.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>This struggle parallels the apocalyptic combat described in [Rev 12]. Death battles against Life: a \u201cculture of death\u201d seeks to impose itself on our desire to live, and live to the full\u2026 Vast sectors of society are confused about what is right and what is wrong, and are at the mercy of those with the power to &#8220;create&#8221; opinion and impose it on others&#8230; <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>The \u201cdragon\u201d<\/strong> <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(Rev 12:3)<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>, the \u201cruler of this world\u201d (<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Jn 12:31) <\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>and the \u201cfather of lies\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (Jn 8:44)<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>, relentlessly tries <em>to eradicate from human hearts the sense of gratitude and respect for the original extraordinary and fundamental gift of God: human life itself<\/em>. Today that struggle has become increasingly direct.<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II, Cherry Creek State Park Homily, Denver, Colorado, 1993<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>III. Global Economy<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">St. John&#8217;s vision was clear that the &#8220;beast&#8221; of Revelation would seek to impose a singular means by which peoples could buy and sell through what he called &#8220;the mark of the beast.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10692_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10692_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Rev 13:16<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_10692_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10692_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The possibility that the whole world could be funneled through a singular economic system seemed impossible a generation ago. But <em>technology<\/em> has changed all that in just a few short decades.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">So, <em>what time is it?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span>The Apocalypse speaks about God\u2019s antagonist, the beast. This animal does not have a name, but a number. In [the horror of the concentration camps], they cancel faces and history, transforming man into a number, reducing him to a cog in an enormous machine. Man is no more than a function. <\/span>In our days, we should not forget that they prefigured the destiny of a world that runs the risk of adopting the same structure of the concentration camps, if the universal law of the machine is accepted. <em>The machines that have been constructed impose the same law. <\/em>According to this logic, man must be interpreted by a <em>computer<\/em> and this is only possible if translated into numbers. <\/strong><span><strong>The beast is a number and transforms into numbers. God, however, has a name and calls by name. He is a person and looks for the person.<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Ratzinger, (POPE BENEDICT XVI) Palermo, March 15th, 2000 (italics added)<\/span><strong><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Holocaust_tattoo.jpg\" width=\"417\" height=\"171\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>\u2026the tyranny of mammon [&#8230;] perverts mankind. No pleasure is ever enough, and the excess of deceiving intoxication becomes a violence that tears whole regions apart \u2013 and all this in the name of a fatal misunderstanding of freedom which actually undermines man\u2019s freedom and ultimately destroys it. <\/strong>\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Address to the Roman Curia, December 20th, 2010<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br \/>IV. The False Prophets<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">It is clear from Christ&#8217;s warnings in the Gospels and the epistles that dangers would rise up, not only from without, but most especially <em>within <\/em>the Church &#8220;perverting the truth.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10692_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10692_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10692_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10692_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <span style=\"font-family: Courier New; font-size: small;\">I know that after my departure savage wolves will come among you, and they will not spare the flock. And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them. So be vigilant\u2026 (Acts 20:29-31)<\/span><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_10692_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10692_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> That is, such &#8220;false prophets&#8221; are those who do not want to &#8220;rock the<br \/> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><\/strong><strong><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Apostasy.jpg\" width=\"239\" height=\"192\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/><\/strong><\/span>boat,&#8221; who water down the Church\u2019s teaching, or ignore it altogether as pass\u00e9, irrelevant, or outdated. They often see the Liturgy and structure of the Church as oppressive, too pious, and undemocratic. They often replace the natural moral law with a shifting ethic of &#8220;tolerance.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p>So, <em>what time is it?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px; font-weight: bold;\">\u2026the smoke of Satan is seeping into the Church of God through the cracks in the walls.<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u2014POPE PAUL VI, first <em>Homily during the Mass for Sts. Peter &amp; Paul<\/em>, June 29, 1972<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">We have arrived at what Pope Benedict called a&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>\u2026dictatorship of relativism that recognizes nothing as definite, and which leaves as the ultimate measure only one\u2019s ego and desires. Having a clear faith, according to the credo of the Church, is often labeled as fundamentalism. Yet, relativism, that is, letting oneself be tossed and \u2018swept along by every wind of teaching\u2019, appears the sole attitude acceptable to today\u2019s standards.<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Ratzinger (POPE BENEDICT XVI) pre-conclave Homily, April 18th, 2005<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span class=\"text\"><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: Trebuchet MS; font-size: small;\"><strong>The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/em>n. 675<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><strong>I think modern life, including life in the Church, suffers from a phony unwillingness to offend that poses as prudence and good manners, but too often turns out to be cowardice. <\/strong>\u2014Archbishop Charles J. (Luke 6:26)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In a society whose thinking is governed by the \u2018tyranny of relativism\u2019 and in which political correctness and human respect are the ultimate criteria of what is to be done and what is to be avoided, the notion of leading someone into moral error makes little sense. What causes wonderment in such a society is the fact that someone fails to observe political correctness and, thereby, seems to be disruptive of the so-called peace of society. \u2014<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Archbishop Raymond L. Perhaps the greatest &#8220;sign of the times&#8221; is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/persecution-spiritual-tsunami\/\">moral tsunami <\/a>that is overturning the natural law, the institution of marriage itself, and our understanding of human sexuality\u2014all accompanied by little to no tolerance with anyone who disagrees.<\/p>\n<p>So, <em>what time is it?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span>\u2026we do worry indeed about this <em>freedom of religion<\/em>.\u00a0 Editorials already call for the removal of guarantees of religious liberty, <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/gaymarriage.jpg\" width=\"237\" height=\"210\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>with crusaders calling for people of faith to be coerced to acceptance of this redefinition.
