JOHN PAUL II, Homily, Saint Peter&#8217;s Square<br \/>\nOctober 22, 1978, No. 5<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em>First published June 18th, 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong>YES<\/strong>, I know John Paul II often said, &#8220;Be not afraid!&#8221; But as we see the Storm winds increasing around us and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/11\/only-jesus-walks-on-water\/\">waves beginning to overwhelm the Barque of Peter<\/a>&#8230; as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/14\/the-spirit-of-control\/\">freedom of religion and speech<\/a> become fragile and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/28\/the-great-corralling\/\">possibility of an antichrist<\/a> remains on the horizon&#8230; as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/25\/the-marian-dimension-of-the-storm\/\">Marian prophecies<\/a> are being fulfilled in real-time and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/15\/why-arent-the-popes-shouting\/\">the warnings of the popes<\/a> go unheeded&#8230; as your own personal troubles, divisions and sorrows mount around you&#8230; how can one possibly <em>not<\/em> be afraid?&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The answer is that the <em>holy courage<\/em> St. John Paul II calls us to is not an emotion, but a <em>divine<\/em> gift. It is the fruit of faith. If you are afraid, it may be precisely because you have not yet fully<em> opened<\/em> the gift. So here are five ways for you to begin walking in holy courage in our times.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">I. LET JESUS IN!<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The key to the words of John Paul II to &#8220;not be afraid&#8221; lies in the second part of his invitation: <em>&#8220;Open wide the doors to Christ!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The Apostle John wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him&#8230; There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear&#8230; (1 John 4:18)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">God <em>is<\/em> the love that drives out all fear. The more I open my heart to Him in childlike faith and &#8220;remain in love&#8221;, the more He enters, driving out the darkness of fear and giving me a holy confidence, boldness, and peace. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. (John 14:27)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The confidence comes from not knowing <em>about<\/em> Him as one would from a textbook, but <em>knowing of\u00a0<\/em>Him as from a relationship. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/PopeJohnPaulII_468x484.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"304\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>The problem is that many of us have not <em>truly <\/em>opened our hearts to God.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Sometimes even Catholics have lost or never had the chance to experience Christ personally: not Christ as a mere \u2018paradigm\u2019 or \u2018value\u2019, but as the living Lord, \u2018the way, and the truth, and the life\u2019<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II, <em>L\u2019Osservatore Romano (English Edition of the Vatican Newspaper), <\/em>March 24, 1993, p.3<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Or we keep Him at arms length for many reasons\u2014from fear that He rejects me, or will not provide for me, or especially, that He will demand too much of me. But Jesus says that unless we become trusting like little children, we cannot have the kingdom of God, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. (Wisdom of Solomon 1:2)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Therefore, the first and foundational key to not being afraid is to let Love in! And this Love is a person.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Let us not close our hearts, let us not lose confidence, let us never give up: there are no situations which God cannot change&#8230;<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014POPE FRANCIS, Easter Vigil Homily, n. 1, March 30th, 2013; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/francesco\/homilies\/2013\/documents\/papa-francesco_20130330_veglia-pasquale_en.html\">www.vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">II. PRAYER OPENS THE DOOR<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Thus, to &#8220;open wide the doors to Christ&#8221; means to enter into a real and living relationship with Him. Coming to Mass on Sunday is not the end <em>per se<\/em>, as if it were some kind of ticket to Heaven, rather, it is the beginning. In order to draw Love into our hearts, we must sincerely draw near to Him in <em>&#8220;spirit and truth.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. (James 4:8)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This drawing near to God &#8220;in spirit&#8221; is foremost called <em>prayer. <\/em> And prayer is a <em>relationship. <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span class=\"style1\"><span style=\"color: #000066;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;\">&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">prayer is the living relationship of the children of God with their Father who is good beyond measure, with his Son Jesus Christ and with the Holy Spirit&#8230; <span style=\"color: #000066; font-size: small;\">Prayer is the encounter of God&#8217;s thirst with ours. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/JPIIrosaryjpg_000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"372\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #000066; font-size: small;\">God thirsts that we may thirst for him<\/span>. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,<\/em> n.2565, 2560<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Prayer, said St. Theresa of Avila, &#8220;is a close sharing between two friends. It means taking time frequently to be alone with Him who loves us.&#8221; It is precisely in prayer that we encounter Jesus, not as a distant deity, but as a living, loving Person.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome Him as a friend, with trust: He is life&#8230; <\/strong>\u2014POPE FRANCIS, Easter Vigil Homily, March 30th, 2013; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/francesco\/homilies\/2013\/documents\/papa-francesco_20130330_veglia-pasquale_en.html\">www.vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">When we simply speak to God from the heart\u2014<em>that<\/em> is prayer. And prayer is what draws the sap of the Holy Spirit from Christ, who is the Vine, into our hearts. It draws in Love who casts out all fear.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000066; font-size: small;\">Prayer attends to the grace we need\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014<em>CCC, <\/em>n.2010<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><strong>The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel only, and that is\u2014trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will receive. Souls that trust boundlessly are a great comfort to Me, because I pour all the treasures of My graces into them. I rejoice that they ask for much, because it is My desire to give much, very much. On the other hand, I am sad when souls ask for little, when they narrow their hearts<\/strong>.<\/em> \u2014Diary of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, <em>Divine Mercy in My Soul,<\/em> n. 1578<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So you see, God <em>wants <\/em>you to open wide your heart to Him. And this means a giving of yourself. Love is an exchange, an exchange of time, of words and trust. Love means becoming vulnerable\u2014both you <em>and <\/em>God becoming vulernable to one another (and what is more vulnerable than hanging naked upon a Cross for one who may never love you in return?) Just as drawing near to a fire banishes cold, so too drawing near to Him in &#8220;prayer of the heart&#8221; expels fear. As you carve out time for supper, you must carve out time for prayer, for that spiritual food which alone nourishes, heals, and liberates the soul from fear.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">III. LEAVE IT BEHIND<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">There is good reason, though, why some people are afraid. It is because they deliberately sin against God. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/deliberate-sin\/\">Deliberate Sin<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> They choose to rebel. That&#8217;s why St. John goes on to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But you might say, &#8220;Well then, I guess I am doomed to be afraid because I am constantly stumbling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">What I am speaking of here is not those venial sins that arise from human weakness and frailty, from imperfections and the like. These do not cut you off from God:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: Trebuchet MS;\"><strong><span class=\"text\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">Venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God\u2019s grace it is humanly reparable. Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span> <em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u2014CCC<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">,<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">n1863<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">What I am speak of here is <em>knowing <\/em>that something is a serious sin, and yet deliberately committing it. Such a person naturally <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/John_Paul_II_as_model_for_Christians_in_old_age_illness.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"246\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>invites darkness into their hearts rather than Love. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. John 3:19<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Such a person is deliberately inviting fear into their hearts because <em>&#8220;fear has to do with punishment.&#8221;<\/em> Their conscience is disturbed, their passions are aroused, and they easily weary as they stumble in darkness. Therefore, in opening wide one&#8217;s heart to Jesus through prayer, one must <em>first<\/em> begin that prayer in the &#8220;truth that sets us free.&#8221; And the first truth is that of who I am\u2014and who I am not.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000066; font-size: small;\">\u2026humility is the foundation of prayer\u2026 Asking forgiveness is the prerequisite for both the Eucharistic Liturg<em>y<\/em> and personal prayer.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>, n. 2559, 2631<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Yes, if you wish to live in the freedom of the sons and daughters of God, you must make a decision to turn away from all sin and unhealthy attachments:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Do not be so confident of forgiveness that you add sin upon sin. Do not say, His mercy is great; my many sins he will forgive. (Sirach 5:5-6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But if you <em>sincerely <\/em>approach Him &#8220;in truth&#8221;, God is <em>waiting <\/em>with all His heart to forgive you:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>O soul steeped in darkness, do not despair. All is not yet lost. Come and confide in your God, who is love and mercy\u2026 Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet\u2026 I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion, but on the contrary, I justify him in My unfathomable and inscrutable mercy.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014Jesus to St. Faustina, <em>Divine Mercy in My Soul<\/em>, Diary, n. 1486, 699, 1146<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. (1 John 1:9)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Confession is the place designated by Christ Himself for one to be liberated from the power of sin.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_10745_1('footnote_plugin_reference_10745_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_10745_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_10745_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. If up till now you have kept him at a distance, step forward. ABANDONMENT<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Many of us may do the above, and yet, we are still prone to having our peace disturbed, our interior security rattled. Why? Because we do not depend <em>entirely<\/em> upon the Father. (Luke 22:42) <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Notice how after Jesus made this prayer in Gethsemane, an angel was sent to comfort Him. Then, as though human fear evaporated, Jesus stood up and delivered Himself to His persecutors who had come to arrest Him. The Father will send the same &#8220;angel&#8221; of strength and courage to those who abandon themselves totally to Him.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/JPIIhug.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"277\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">To accept the will of God, whether it is to our liking or not, is to be like a little child. Such a soul who walks in that kind of abandonment is no longer afraid, but he sees everything as being from God, and therefore good\u2014even, or rather, <em>especially, <\/em>when it is the Cross. David wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Following the &#8220;light&#8221; of God&#8217;s will casts away the darkness of fear:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Indeed, Jesus promised that we would find &#8220;rest&#8221; in Him&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">&#8230;but how?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; <em>and you will find rest for your selves.<\/em> (Matt 11:28)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">When we take the yoke of His will upon us, that&#8217;s when we find rest from the anxiety and fear that seeks to overwhelm us.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So don&#8217;t be afraid if God seems distant in your suffering, like He has forgotten you. He will never forget you. That is His promise (see Isaiah 49:15-16 and Matt 28:20). Rather, He sometimes hides Himself and His intentions in the painful disguise of His permissive will so as to reveal to us whether or not we <em>actually <\/em>trust Him and will <em>wait<\/em> for His timing and providence. When it came to feeding the five thousand, Jesus asks:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8220;Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?&#8221; He said this to test [Philip], because he himself knew what he was going to do. (cf. John 6:1-15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So, when everything seems to be collapsing around you, pray:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em>O Jesus, I surrender myself to you, take care of everything!\u00a0<\/em>(from a powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/19\/novena-of-abandonment\/\">Novena of Abandonment<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">&#8230;and surrender to your circumstances by returning to the duty of the moment. When we live points I\u2014IV above, then joy will be born naturally as a fruit of the Holy Spirit.
