{"id":11625,"date":"2013-09-20T18:28:04","date_gmt":"2013-09-21T00:28:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/?p=11625"},"modified":"2017-04-17T22:01:28","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T02:01:28","slug":"understanding-francis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/understanding-francis\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Francis","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<div align=\"center\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Pope-Francis.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script>(function(d, s, id) {\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\n  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;\n  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\";\n  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);\n}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));<\/script><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong>AFTER <\/strong>Pope Benedict XVI relinquished the seat of Peter, I<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-question-on-questioning-prophecy\/\"> sensed in prayer several times<\/a> the words: <em>You have entered into dangerous days.\u00a0<\/em>It was the sense that the Church is entering into a period of great confusion.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Enter: Pope Francis.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Not unlike Blessed John Paul II&#8217;s papacy, our new pope has also overturned the deeply rooted sod of the status quo. He has challenged everyone in the Church in one way or another. Several readers, however, have written me with concern that Pope Francis is departing from the Faith by his unorthodox actions, his blunt remarks, and seemingly contradictory statements. I have been listening for several months now, watching and praying, and feel compelled to respond to these questions regarding our Pope&#8217;s candid ways&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more-->A &#8220;RADICAL SHIFT&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">That&#8217;s what the media are calling it in the wake of Pope Francis&#8217; interview with Fr. Antonio Spadaro, S. J. published in September 2013. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/pope-interview\">americamagazine.org<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The exchange was conducted over three meetings in the previous month. What caught the mass media&#8217;s attention were his comments on the &#8220;hot topics&#8221; that have drawn the Catholic Church into a cultural war:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible. I have not <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Pope-Francis-meets-Media.jpg\" width=\"198\" height=\"232\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>spoken much about these things, and I was reprimanded for that. But when we speak about these issues, we have to talk about them in a context. The teaching of the church, for that matter, is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time. <\/strong>\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/pope-interview\">americamagazine.org<\/a>, September 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">His words were interpreted as being a &#8220;radical shift&#8221; from his predecessors. Once again, Pope Benedict was framed by several media as the hard, cold, doctrinally rigid pontiff. And yet, Pope Francis&#8217; words are unequivocal: &#8220;The teaching of the church&#8230; is clear and I am a son of the church&#8230;&#8221; That is, there is no loosening of the Church&#8217;s moral stand on these issues. Rather, the Holy Father, standing on the bow of the Barque of Peter, looking at the sea of change in the world, sees a fresh course and &#8220;tactic&#8221; for the Church.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">A HOME FOR THE HURTING<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">He recognizes that we are living in a culture today where so many of us are tremendously wounded by the sin around us. We are crying out first and foremost to be loved&#8230; to know that we are loved in the midst of our weakness, dysfunction, and sinfulness. In this regard, the Holy Father sees the course of the Church today in a new light:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I see clearly that the thing the church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/fieldhospital.jpg\" width=\"217\" height=\"211\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"2\" \/>proximity. I see the church as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds, heal the wounds&#8230;. And you have to start from the ground up. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014Ibid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">We are in the midst of a culture war. We can all see that. Overnight practically, the world has been painted in rainbow colors. &#8220;Abortion, gay marriage, and the use contraceptive methods,&#8221; have become so quickly and universally accepted, that those who oppose them in the near future likely do face the real prospect of persecution. The faithful are exhausted, overwhelmed, and feeling betrayed on many fronts. But how we face this reality now, in 2013 and beyond, is something the vicar of Christ believes is in need of a fresh approach.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The most important thing is the first proclamation: Jesus Christ has saved you. And the ministers of the church must be ministers of mercy above all.<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014Ibid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This is really a beautiful insight that directly echoes Blessed John Paul&#8217;s &#8220;divine task&#8221; to make the message of mercy through St. Faustina known to the world, and Benedict XVI&#8217;s beautiful and simple way of placing an encounter with Jesus at the center of one&#8217;s life. As he said in meeting with the bishops of Ireland:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>So often the Church\u2019s counter-cultural witness is misunderstood as something backward and negative in today\u2019s society. That is why it is important to emphasize the Good News, the life-giving and life-enhancing message of the Gospel (cf. Jn 10:10). Even though it is necessary to speak out strongly against the evils that threaten us, we must correct the idea that Catholicism is merely \u201ca collection of prohibitions\u201d.<\/strong> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Address to Irish Bishops; VATICAN CITY, OCT. 29, 2006<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The danger, said Francis, is losing sight of the big picture, the larger context.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The church sometimes has locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/pope-interview\">Homily, americamagazine.org<\/a>, September 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Perhaps that is why Pope Francis refused to be locked up in the &#8220;small things&#8221; at the beginning of his pontificate when he washed the feet of twelve prison inmates, of which two were woman. It broke a <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Footwashing_000.jpg\" width=\"214\" height=\"322\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>liturgical norm (at least one that is followed in a few places). The Vatican defended Francis&#8217; actions as being &#8216;absolutely licit&#8217; since it was not a sacrament. Furthermore, the pope&#8217;s spokesman underscored that it was a communal prison of both men and women, and leaving the latter out would have been &#8216;strange&#8217;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>This community understands simple and essential things; they were not liturgy scholars. Washing feet was important to present the Lord&#8217;s spirit of service and love<\/strong>. \u2014Rev. Federico Lombardi, Vatican spokesman, Religious News Service, March 29th, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The Pope acted according to the &#8220;spirit of the law&#8221; as opposed to the &#8220;letter of the law.&#8221; In doing so he ruffled some feathers to be certain\u2014not unlike a certain Jewish man 2000 years ago who healed on the Sabbath, dined with sinners, and spoke with and touched unclean women. The law was made for man, not man for the law, He once said. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Mark 2:27<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The liturgical norms are there to bring order, meaningful symbolism, language and beauty to the liturgy. But if they do not serve love, St. Paul might say, they are &#8220;nothing.&#8221; In this case, it can be argued that the Pope demonstrated that the suspension of a liturgical norm was necessary in order to fulfill the &#8220;law of love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">A NEW BALANCE<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">By his actions, the Holy Father is trying to create a &#8220;new balance&#8221; as he puts it. Not by neglecting the truth, but re-ordering our priorities.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>The church\u2019s ministers must be merciful, take responsibility for the people and accompany them like the good Samaritan, who washes, cleans and raises up his neighbor. This is pure Gospel. God is greater than sin. The structural and organizational reforms are <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/FrancisKiss.jpg\" width=\"167\" height=\"310\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"2\" \/>secondary\u2014that is, they come afterward. The first reform must be the attitude. The ministers of the Gospel must be people who can warm the hearts of the people, who walk through the dark night with them, who know how to dialogue and to descend themselves into their people\u2019s night, into the darkness, but without getting lost.<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/pope-interview\">americamagazine.org<\/a>, September 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Yes, this is precisely the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/fresh-breeze\/#more-11559\">fresh breeze<\/a>&#8221; I was referring to in August, a new outpouring of the love of Christ in and through us. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/fresh-breeze\/#more-11559\">Fresh Breeze<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> But &#8220;without getting lost&#8221;, that is, falling, said Francis, into the &#8220;danger of being either too much of a rigorist or too lax.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">see the part of the interview under &#8220;the Church as Field Hospital&#8221; where Pope Francis discusses confessors, clearly noting that some confessors make the mistake of minimizing sin.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Furthermore, our witness must take a bold, concrete form.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Instead of being just a church that welcomes and receives by keeping the doors open, let us try also to be a church that finds new roads, that is able to step outside itself and go to those who do not attend Mass&#8230; We need to proclaim the Gospel on every street corner, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing, even with our preaching, every kind of disease and wound&#8230; <\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014Ibid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Many of you know that several of my writings here speak of the &#8220;final confrontation&#8221; of our era, of the culture of life vs. the culture of death. The response to these writings has been overwhelmingly positive. But when I wrote <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-desolate-garden\/\">The Desolate Garden<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>recently, it struck a deep chord within many of you. We are all searching for hope and healing, grace and strength in these times. That is the bottom line. The rest of the world is no different; in fact, the darker it gets, the more urgent, the more opportune it is becoming to propose the Gospel again in a profoundly clear and straightforward way.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Proclamation in a missionary style focuses on the essentials, on the necessary things: this is also what fascinates and attracts more, what makes the heart burn, as it did for the disciples at Emmaus. We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel. The proposal of the Gospel must be more simple, profound, radiant. It is from this proposition that the moral consequences then flow.<\/span><\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014Ibid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So Pope Francis is not neglecting the &#8220;moral consequences.&#8221; But to make them our main focus <em>today<\/em> risks sterilizing the Church and shutting people out. Had Jesus entered towns preaching Heaven and Hell rather than healing, souls would have walked away. The Good Shepherd knew that, first <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/pope-francisEMBRACE_000.jpg\" width=\"267\" height=\"192\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>of all, He had to bind the wounds of the lost sheep and place them on His shoulders, and then they would listen. He entered towns healing the sick, casting out demons, opening the eyes of the blind. And then He would share with them the Gospel, including the moral consequences of not heeding it. In this way, Jesus became a refuge for sinners. So too, the Church must be recognized again as a home for the hurting.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. We must not reduce the bosom of the universal church to a nest protecting our mediocrity. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014Ibid. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This is no significant departure from John Paul II or Benedict XVI, who both heroically defended the truth in our times. And so has Francis. So blared a headline today: &#8220;<em>Pope Francis blasts abortion as part of a &#8216;throw away cultur<\/em>e'&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/pope-francis-blasts-abortion-as-part-of-throw-away-culture-1.1861979\">cbc.ca<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> But the winds have changed; the times have changed; the Spirit is moving in a new way. Isn&#8217;t this in fact what Pope Benedict XVI prophetically said was needed, moving him to step aside?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">And thus, Francis has extended an olive branch, even to atheists, stirring up yet another non-controversy&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">EVEN THE ATHEISTS<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! \u2018Father, the atheists?\u2019 Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace.<\/strong> \u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2013\/05\/22\/pope_at_mass%3A_culture_of_encounter_is_the_foundation_of_peace\/en1-694445\">POPE FRANCIS, Homily, Vatican Radio<\/a>, May 22nd, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Several commentators erroneously concluded that the Pope was suggesting that atheists can simply get to Heaven by good deeds <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2013\/may\/24\/pope-francis-suggests-atheists-good-deeds-gets-the\/\">The Washington Time<\/a>s<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> or that everyone is saved, no matter what they believe. But a careful reading of the pope&#8217;s words suggest neither, and in fact, underscore that what he said is not only true, but also biblical.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">First, every single human being has indeed been redeemed by Christ&#8217;s<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/christ-crucified.jpg\" width=\"259\" height=\"293\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/> blood shed for all on the Cross. This is precisely what St. Paul wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that one died for all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised&#8230; (2 Cor 5:14-15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This has been the constant teaching of the Catholic Church:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">The Church, following the apostles, teaches that Christ died for all men without exception: &#8220;There is not, never has been, and never will be a single human being for whom Christ did not suffer.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/em>n. 605<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">While everyone has been <em>redeemed<\/em> through Christ&#8217;s blood, not all are <em>saved<\/em>. Or putting it in St. Paul&#8217;s terms, all have died, but not all choose to rise to a new life in Christ to live <em>&#8220;no longer&#8230; for themselves but for him&#8230;<\/em>&#8221; Instead, they live a self-centered, selfish life, a wide and easy path that leads to perdition.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So what is the pope saying? She loved everyone as if it was Jesus. In that place of unconditional love, the seed of the Gospel was already being planted.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>If we, each doing our own part, if we do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter: we need that so much. We must meet one another doing good. \u2018But I don\u2019t believe, Father, I am an atheist!\u2019 But do good: we will meet one another there.<\/strong> \u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2013\/05\/22\/pope_at_mass%3A_culture_of_encounter_is_the_foundation_of_peace\/en1-694445\">POPE FRANCIS, Homily, Vatican Radio<\/a>, May 22nd, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This is a far cry from saying we will all meet in Heaven\u2014Pope Francis did not say that. But if we choose to love one another and form a moral consensus on the &#8220;good&#8221;, that is indeed the foundation for peace and authentic dialogue and the beginning of the &#8220;way&#8221; that leads to &#8220;life&#8221;. This is precisely what Pope Benedict preached when he warned that the very loss of a moral consensus spelled not peace, but disaster for the future.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Only if there is such a consensus on the essentials can constitutions and law function. This fundamental consensus derived from the Christian heritage is at risk\u2026 In reality, this makes reason blind to what is essential. To resist this eclipse of reason and to preserve its capacity for seeing the essential, for seeing God and man, for seeing what is good and what is true, is the common interest that must unite all people of good will. The very future of the world is at stake<\/strong>. \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Address to the Roman Curia, December 20th, 2010<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">&#8220;WHO AM I TO JUDGE?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Those words rang around the world like a cannon. The pope was asked about what has been called a &#8220;gay lobby&#8221; in the Vatican, allegedly a group of priests and bishops who are actively homosexual and who cover up for one another.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Pope Francis said it was important to &#8220;distinguish between a person who is gay and someone who makes a gay lobby.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>&#8220;A gay person who is seeking God, who is of good will \u2014 well, who am I to judge him?&#8221; the pope said. &#8220;The <em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em> explains this very well. It says one must not marginalize these persons, they must be integrated into society&#8230;&#8221; <\/strong>\u2014<em>Catholic News Service,\u00a0<\/em>July, 31, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Evangelical Christians and gays alike took these words and ran with them\u2014the former suggesting that the Pope was excusing homosexuality, the latter, approving. Again, a calm reading of the Holy Father&#8217;s words indicate neither.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">First of all, the Pope distinguished between those who are actively gay\u2014the &#8220;gay lobby&#8221;\u2014and those who are struggling with the homosexual orientation but are &#8220;seeking God&#8221; and who are of &#8220;good will.&#8221; One can&#8217;t be seeking God and of good will if they are practicing homosexuality. The pope made that clear by referring to the\u00a0<em>Catechism&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>teaching on the subject\u00a0(which apparently few bothered to read before commenting).\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000066;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;\">Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,tradition has always declared that &#8220;homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.&#8221;\u00a0They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">\u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,\u00a0<\/em>n. 2357<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;\"><br \/><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <em>Catechism\u00a0<\/em>explains the nature of homosexual activity &#8220;very well.&#8221; But it also explains how a person of &#8220;good will,&#8221; who is struggling with their sexual orientation, is to be approached.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva; font-size: small; color: #000066;\"><strong>The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God&#8217;s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord&#8217;s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva; font-size: small; color: #003366;\"><strong>Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva; color: #000080; font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'times new roman', times;\">\u2014n. 2358-2359<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The Pope&#8217;s approach directly echoed this teaching. Of course, without giving this context in his statement, the Holy Father did leave himself open to misunderstanding\u2014but only for those who did not reference the Church&#8217;s teaching that he directly pointed to.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">In my own ministry, through letters and public talks, I have met gay men who were trying to find healing in their lives. I remember one young man who came up after a talk at a men&#8217;s conference. He thanked me for speaking about the issue of homosexuality with compassion, not damning him. He desired to follow Christ and to recover his true identity, but felt isolated and rejected by some in the Church. I did not compromise in my talk, but I also spoke about God&#8217;s mercy for\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>sinners, and it was Christ&#8217;s mercy that moved him deeply. I have also journeyed with others who are now serving Jesus faithfully and no longer in the gay lifestyle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">These are the souls who are &#8220;seeking God&#8221; and of &#8220;good will&#8221;, and they should not be judged. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">THE NEW WIND OF THE SPIRIT<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">There is a new wind filling the sails of the Barque of Peter. Pope<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Sails.jpg\" width=\"214\" height=\"400\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/> Francis is not Benedict XVI nor John Paul II. That is because Christ is directing us on a new course, built upon the foundation of Francis&#8217; predecessors. And yet, it is not a new course at all. It is rather <em>authentic Christian witness<\/em> expressed in a new spirit of love and courage. The world has changed. It is hurting, immensely. The Church today has to adjust\u2014not abandoning her doctrines, but clearing the tables to make way for the wounded. She must become a field hospital for <em>all. <\/em>We are being called, as Jesus did to Zacchaeus, to look our perceived enemy&#8217;s in the eye and say, &#8220;<em>come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house<\/em>.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/come-down-zacchaeus\/\">Come Down Zacchaeu<\/a>s, <\/em>Luke 19:5<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> This is the message of Pope Francis. And what do we see happening? Francis is attracting the fallen while shaking the establishment&#8230; just as Jesus shook the conservatives of His day while drawing the tax collectors and prostitutes to Himself.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Pope Francis is not moving the Church away from the battle lines of the cultural war. Rather, he is now calling us to pick up different weapons: the weapons of modesty, poverty, simplicity, authenticity. By these means, presenting Jesus to the world with an authentic face of love, healing and reconciliation have a chance to begin. The world may or may not receive us. Likely, they will crucify us&#8230; but it was then, after Jesus breathed His last, that the centurion finally believed.<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/pope-francis-night.jpg\" width=\"467\" height=\"291\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Lastly, Catholics need to reaffirm their trust in the Admiral of this ship, <em>Christ<\/em> Himself. Jesus, not the pope, is the one who builds His Church, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_11625_1('footnote_plugin_reference_11625_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_11625_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[8]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_11625_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Listen to the pope; heed his words; pray for him. He is Christ&#8217;s vicar and shepherd, given to feed us and lead us in these times.
