There are many leaders today, but so few role models; many who govern, but so few who serve. Even in the Church, the sheep have wandered for decades since the confusion after Vatican II left a moral and leadership vacuum on the local level. And then there have been what Pope Francis calls &#8220;epochal&#8221; changes <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_12289_1('footnote_plugin_reference_12289_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_12289_1('footnote_plugin_reference_12289_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_12289_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_12289_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em>Evangelii Gaudium, <\/em>n. 52<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_12289_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_12289_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> that have led to, among other things, a profound sense of loneliness. In the words of Benedict XVI:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>We cannot deny that the rapid changes occurring in our world also present some disturbing signs of fragmentation and a retreat into individualism. The expanding use of electronic communications has in some cases paradoxically resulted in greater isolation\u2026 Also of grave concern is the spread of a secularist ideology that undermines or even rejects transcendent truth.<\/strong> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, speech at St. Joseph\u2019s Church, April 8th, 2008, Yorkville, New York; Catholic News Agency<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">Indeed, studies show that, despite the spread of social media like Facebook, which now has over 1.1 billion participants, regular users feel more lonely and less happy after periods of use. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_12289_1('footnote_plugin_reference_12289_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_12289_1('footnote_plugin_reference_12289_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_12289_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_12289_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. study by University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, Ethan Kross, &#8220;Facebook Use Predicts Declines in Subjective Well-Being in Young Adults&#8221;, August 14th, 2013; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi\/10.1371\/journal.pone.0069841\">www.plosone.org<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_12289_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_12289_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> As one writer in the New York Times put it,<span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Technology celebrates connectedness, but encourages retreat&#8230; Each step &#8220;forward&#8221; has made it easier, just a little, to avoid the emotional work of being present, to convey information rather than humanity.<\/strong> \u2014Jonathan Safran Foer,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/09\/opinion\/sunday\/how-not-to-be-alone.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=1&amp;\"> www.nytimes.com<\/a>, June 8th, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">And so, we feel more disconnected than ever.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">As I reflect on this week&#8217;s readings in the wake of Pope Francis&#8217; Apostolic Exhortation, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/francesco\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium_en.html#No_to_the_new_idolatry_of_money\">Evangelii Gaudium<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/francesco\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium_en.html#No_to_the_new_idolatry_of_money\"> (&#8220;The Joy of the Gospel&#8221;<\/a>), I hear today&#8217;s Gospel with more force and immediacy than ever:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">But you&#8217;ll notice that after Jesus told the Apostles to pray for labourers, He immediately turned to <em>them<\/em> and said, &#8220;Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.&#8221; Is it possible that when we think of the word &#8220;evangelization&#8221; we always think it&#8217;s for someone else&#8230; for Mark Mallett, for Fr. So and So, Sister Such and Such? Do you realize the call is very much for you too? The Psalm today says,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">But how does He do that <em>except<\/em> through His Church&#8230; you and me?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>&#8230;all of us are called to take part in this new missionary &#8220;going forth&#8221;&#8230; all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the \u201cperipheries\u201d in need of the light of the Gospel.<\/strong> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/francesco\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium_en.html#No_to_the_new_idolatry_of_money\">Evangelii Gaudium<\/a>, <\/em>n. 20<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">This is why I am encouraging you, my dear family of readers, to persevere in the tremendous sufferings that are being experienced by so many today striving to be faithful. Because, as I wrote earlier this week, Jesus is writing <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/your-testimony\/\">Your Testimony<\/a><\/em>, but He does so in order to <em>send you to the lost sheep<\/em> that they may hear the Good News through you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">The world is lonely today and profoundly lost. In the search for happiness, like the prodigal son, we have cast off every restraint (see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/removing-the-restrainer\/\">Removing the Restrainer<\/a><\/em>). But this is only compounding the isolation and fear that is gripping many hearts. This is why Our Lady called us to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/to-the-bastion\/\">To the Bastion<\/a><\/em> several years ago. I really encourage you to go back and re-read that prophetic word (and the ones in Related Reading below) for I believe, with Francis&#8217; Exhortation, we are now being sent on a profound mission, a <em>mission of mercy<\/em> very much related to our &#8220;epochal&#8221; times:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><em>Before I come as a just Judge, I first open wide the door of My mercy. He who refuses to pass through the door of My mercy must pass through the door of My justice&#8230;<\/em><\/strong> \u2014Jesus to St. Faustina, <em>Divine Mercy in My Soul, <\/em>Diary, n. 1146<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">But let us begin where we can, and do only what the Lord asks: to some He gives ten talents, another five, and to many, only one. But He expects the same generous response from each of us, &#8220;according to the measure of Christ&#8217;s gift.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_12289_1('footnote_plugin_reference_12289_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_12289_1('footnote_plugin_reference_12289_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_12289_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_12289_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Eph 4:7<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_12289_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_12289_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And for all of us, that starts in the home by witnessing loving-service to our spouse, patience with our children, kindness to our neighbour. Jesus did not immediately send the twelve Apostles to the distant nations. He started with the local villages, their own house\u2014the &#8220;house of Israel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">You, my brother have the Holy Spirit; you, my sister, are a living tabernacle. For both of you have been baptized; both of you have received His Body and Blood, what Isaiah calls today, &#8220;<em>the bread you need and the water for which you thirst.<\/em>&#8221; Now go, and give what you can to those who are hungry, to those who thirst\u2014Christ in you\u2014beginning with those in your own home.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: courier new,courier;\">Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. (Matt 10:8)<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Going out to others in order to reach the fringes of humanity does not mean rushing out aimlessly into the world. Often it is better simply to slow down, to put aside our eagerness in order to see and listen to others, to stop rushing from one thing to another and to remain with someone who has faltered along the way. At times we have to be like the father of the prodigal son, who always keeps his door open so that when the son returns, he can readily pass through it. <\/strong>\u2014POPE FRANCIS, <em><a
