They were obsessed with details, watching like hawks to find fault with this or that person, with any little thing that wasn&#8217;t according to &#8220;standard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The Lord is also concerned with the little things&#8230; but in a much different way.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more-->In today&#8217;s first reading, God does not choose Jesse&#8217;s tall and stately sons to be king, but his little shepherd boy, David: &#8220;<em>Over the people I have set a youth<\/em>.&#8221; For,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier; font-size: small;\">God does not see as man sees; man looks at appearances but the Lord looks at the heart. (First reading; <em>Jerusalem<\/em> translation)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">And the kind of heart the Lord looks for are &#8220;little&#8221; hearts:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Unless you turn and become like little children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 18:3)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">We know, by reading the Psalms, that David always found a way to be little.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Neither does the Lord expect us to do more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-sacrament-of-the-present-moment\/\">the duty of the moment<\/a>, those little matters throughout the day that compose His will, and strengthen us to love our neighbour more and more.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. (Matt 25:21)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Even then, it does not take gargantuan faith for grace to move in our lives.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, \u2018Move from here to there,\u2019 and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. (Matt 17:20)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Jesus was also moved by the seemingly little things in the eyes of the world, such as the widow&#8217;s donation of a few cents; the little basket of five loaves and two fish; the least of the brothers found in the poor; little Zacchaheus the tax collector; and most especially, that little girl named Mary who would become His mother\u2014and the Mother of all peoples.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">God does not look at appearances. In fact, He doesn&#8217;t measure us by our gifts and talents either, but rather, by what we do with them. For, &#8220;<em>every one to whom much is given, of him will much be required<\/em>.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13312_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13312_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13312_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13312_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13312_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13312_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Luke 12:48<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13312_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13312_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> That&#8217;s why in eternity, we may be surprised that the &#8220;greatest in Heaven&#8221; will be those who were little\u2014humble, gentle, and meek of heart. They may have only been given one &#8220;talent&#8221; in this life\u2014not five or ten\u2014but they did not bury it in the ground, and instead, gave all their heart, body, mind, and soul into using it for the Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Today is the Memorial of St. Agnes, a thirteen year old martyr who was little in stature, but grand in faithfulness. So commit this day not to great things, but &#8220;little&#8221; things\u2014the little things that matter.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But do them with <em>great<\/em> love.<\/p>\n<p
