David answers in today&#8217;s first reading:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">It is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves. For the battle is the LORD\u2019s and he shall deliver you into our hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<p>St. Paul put David&#8217;s words into the contemporary light of the new covenant:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. (1 Cor 4:20)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is the <em>power<\/em> of the Holy Spirit that converts hearts, peoples, and nations. It is the <em>power<\/em> of the Holy Spirit that illuminates minds to the truth. It is the <em>power<\/em> of the Holy Spirit so desperately needed in our times. Why do you think Jesus is sending His Mother among us? (Luke 12:49)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But we need to be careful lest we think of a &#8220;new Pentecost&#8221; or even that first Pentecost as events isolated from the <em>preparation<\/em> that facilitated the coming of the Holy Spirit. If you&#8217;ll recall what I wrote recently in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-emptying\/\">The Emptying<\/a>,<\/em> it was only after Jesus was in the desert for forty days and nights that He emerged <em>&#8220;in the power of the Spirit.&#8221;<\/em> Likewise, the Apostles had spent three years of following Jesus, meditating on His words, praying, and dying to their old ways before tongues of fire descended upon them and they, likewise, began to move <em>in the power of the Spirit.<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Acts 1:8<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And then David, that shepherd boy, spent endless days tending the sheepfolds, fighting against &#8220;<em>the claws of the lion and the bear<\/em>&#8220;, singing praise to God with the lyre, and learning what kind of stones were his greatest weapons <em>before<\/em> the Lord brought him face to face with Goliath.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, we too must urgently enter into that preparation for a new movement of the Spirit. We have to learn to pick up the <em>&#8220;five smooth stones<\/em>,&#8221; as taught and encouraged by our mother, the Church, that will prepare us to face the giants of our time&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I. PRAYER<\/p>\n<p>Prayer is the underlying stone of all the others. Why? Because prayer is what &#8220;connects&#8221; you to the Vine, who is Christ, and without whom &#8220;<em>you can do nothing<\/em>.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Jn 15:5<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Personal time alone with God draws the &#8220;sap&#8221; of the Spirit into your life.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000066;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">\u2026prayer<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">is<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">the living<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">relationship<\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">of the children of God with their Father\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span>\u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,<\/em> n.2565<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>II. FASTING<\/p>\n<p>Fasting and sacrifice is what empties one of self and creates space for that grace which comes by way of prayer.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000066; font-size: small;\">Prayer attends to the grace we need\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014<em>CCC, <\/em>n.2010<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Fasting is what likens and unites the soul more to the crucified Lord, who destroyed death by His death, thus configuring and preparing the soul to receive the <em>power<\/em> of the Resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>III. ALMSGIVING<\/p>\n<p>Works of mercy toward our neighbour are what activates and enlivens <em>faith<\/em>, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. James 2:17<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> which Jesus said can &#8220;move mountains.&#8221; The &#8220;mystical force&#8221;\u00a0 <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. THE SACRAMENTS<\/p>\n<p>By <em>frequenting<\/em> the Sacraments of Confession and the Holy Eucharist, the soul is healed, nurtured, renewed, and restored. The Sacraments then become a school of love and the &#8220;source and summit&#8221; of drawing upon the grace of the Holy Spirit through direct encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist, and the Father in Reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>V. THE WORD OF GOD<\/p>\n<p>This is the stone that will penetrate the skull of the giants. It is the <em>sword of the Spirit. <\/em>For the Word of God is&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (2 Tim 3:15-17)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the Word only penetrates &#8220;<em>between soul and spirit, joints and marrow<\/em>&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Heb 4:12<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> when it is &#8220;<em>hurled&#8230; with the sling&#8221;<\/em>, that is, delivered in the <em>power <\/em>of the Spirit. This comes by way of the double-edged sword of a spoken word (logos), or the &#8220;word&#8221; of one&#8217;s witness that puts flesh on the spoken word (rhema).<\/p>\n<p>These five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/little-things-that-matter\/\">little<\/a> stones open the heart to God, conform the mind, and transform the soul more and more into the likeness of Jesus so that it becomes &#8220;<em>no longer I, but Christ living in me<\/em>.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13328_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13328_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[8]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Gal 2:20<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13328_1_8').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13328_1_8', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> So moving in the <em>power <\/em>of the Spirit is essentially becoming another Christ in the world. It is this interior life in God that prepares you again and again to receive the Spirit, fill you with the Spirit, and propel you forward in the <em>power <\/em>of the Spirit&#8230; to face whatever giants there may be.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war. (Today&#8217;s Psalm, 144)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>The Holy Spirit also grants the courage to proclaim the newness of the Gospel with boldness (<i>parrhes\u00eda<\/i>) in every time and place, even when it meets with opposition. Let us call upon him today, firmly rooted in prayer, for without prayer all our activity risks being fruitless and our message empty.
