This time, <em>Rolling Stone <\/em>magazine has jumped into the fray, describing Francis&#8217; pontificate as a &#8216;Gentle Revolution,&#8217; whilst stating that Pope Benedict is&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>&#8230;a staunch traditionalist who looked like he should be wearing a striped shirt with knife-fingered gloves and menacing teenagers in their nightmares.<\/strong> \u2014Mark Binelli, &#8220;Pope Francis: The Times They Are A-Changin'&#8221;, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/news\/pope-francis-the-times-they-are-a-changin-20140128\">Rolling Stone<\/a>, <\/em>January 28th, 2014<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Yes, the media would have us believe that Benedict is a moralistic monster, and the current pope, Francis the Fluffy. Likewise, some Catholics would have us believe that Francis is a modernist apostate and Benedict a prisoner of the Vatican.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Well, we&#8217;ve heard enough in the course of Francis&#8217; short pontificate to get a sense of his pastoral direction. So, just for fun, let&#8217;s take a look at the quotes below, and take a guess at who said them\u2014Francis or Benedict?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">WHO SAID THAT?<\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Pope-Benedict-welcomes-Po-013_000.jpg\" width=\"370\" height=\"177\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I.<strong> The Church does not engage in proselytism. Instead, she grows <i>by \u201cattraction\u201d<\/i>&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">II. <strong>It is necessary to go to the very fringes of society to take to everyone the light of Christ&#8217;s message about the meaning of life&#8230; and loving them with the love of the Risen Christ.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">III. <strong>capitalism&#8230; promised to point out the path for the creation of just structures, and they declared that these, once established, would function by themselves&#8230; the distance between rich and poor is growing constantly, and giving rise to a worrying degradation of personal dignity&#8230;.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">IV. <strong>The poor living in the outskirts of the cities or the countryside need to feel that the Church is close to them&#8230; The Gospel is addressed in a special way to the poor&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">V.<strong> &#8230;the gray pragmatism of the daily life of the Church, in which all appears to proceed normally, while in reality faith is wearing down and degenerating into small-mindedness.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">VI. <strong>Religious freedom&#8230; includes the freedom to choose the religion which one judges to be true and to manifest one\u2019s beliefs in public.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">VII. <strong>&#8230;love of neighbour is a path that leads to the encounter with God&#8230; closing our eyes to our neighbour also blinds us to God. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">VIII. <strong>We must not yield to the temptation of relativism or of a subjective and selective interpretation of Sacred Scripture.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">IX. <strong>God is not far from us, he is not somewhere out in the universe, somewhere that none of us can go. He has pitched his tent among us&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">X. <strong>The person who abandons himself totally in God&#8217;s hands does not become God&#8217;s puppet, a boring &#8220;yes man&#8221;; he does not lose his freedom. Only the person who entrusts himself totally to God finds true freedom.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">XI. <strong>Love becomes truly Christian only when it is given to everyone without counting the cost. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">XII. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">How could the idea have developed that Jesus\u2019s message is narrowly individualistic and aimed only at each person singly&#8230; a selfish search for salvation which rejects the idea of serving others?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">XIII. <strong>This is a point that every Christian must understand and apply to himself or herself: only those who first listen to the Word can become preachers of it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So how did you do? That they each have their own personalities and way of expressing the Gospel is what makes their consistent message so convincing and powerful. The Church has taught the same thing for 2000 years, and Christ will not let that change.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church&#8230; when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. (Matt 16:18; John 16:1)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Pope Francis may appear to cross the line of modernism and moral relativism, but only because some Catholics are reading <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> and the like instead of the recent papal encyclical, apostolic exhortation, or Catechism to understand their faith.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">REMADE IN THEIR OWN IMAGE\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The world wants a rock star for a pope\u2014part of the systemic sickness in our culture that is longing for heroes because we have produced so many zeroes; a culture that, having forsaken worship in God, <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/popespraying.jpg\" width=\"234\" height=\"336\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/>now turns to the worship of the creature. And so, the liberal media is ready to remake anyone in their own image.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">They believe they have found another star in Pope Francis, in his &#8220;gentle revolution.&#8221; But they are mistaken. There is nothing gentle about the Cross. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13516_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13516_1_10');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13516_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13516_1_10');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13516_1_10\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[10]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13516_1_10\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.
