It is a temptation that has followed Christians since the Apostles fled the garden and Peter denied Jesus.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Likewise, one of the greatest crises in the Church today is the real lack of men and women who courageously and unashamedly associate themselves with Jesus Christ. Perhaps Cardinal Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) gave the most compelling reason as to why more and more Christians are abandoning the Barque of Peter: they are caving into a&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>\u2026dictatorship of relativism that recognizes nothing as definite, and which leaves as the ultimate measure only one\u2019s ego and desires. Having a clear faith, according to the credo of the Church, is often labeled as fundamentalism. Yet, relativism, that is, letting oneself be tossed and \u2018swept along by every wind of teaching\u2019, appears the sole attitude acceptable to today\u2019s standards.<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Ratzinger (POPE BENEDICT XVI) pre-conclave Homily, April 18th, 2005<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">In a word, many don&#8217;t want to be seen as &#8220;fundamentalists&#8221;, that is, taking a firm position on anything. We hear people who say, &#8220;I am personally against abortion, but I don&#8217;t force my opinion on others&#8230;&#8221;, or, &#8220;I&#8217;m neutral on the whole gay thing,&#8221; or, &#8220;My faith is personal\u2014you can believe what you want.&#8221; This, of course, is a veiled attempt to hide cowardice and appear &#8220;tolerant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span class=\"fid2\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Tolerance is a virtue, but it is certainly not the principal virtue; the principal virtue is charity. Charity means speaking the truth<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">..<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>. <\/strong>\u2014Cardinal Raymond Burke, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/Big-Government\/2013\/09\/21\/Vatican-s-Cardinal-Burke-Tolerance-Has-Been-Falsely-Exalted-As-The-Virtue-Which-Governs-All-Other-Virtues\">Brietbart.com<\/a>, Sept. 22, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">In today&#8217;s first reading, St. James points out a rather bizarre irony: why, he asks, are you appeasing the very people who would persecute you?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Are not the rich oppressing you? And do they themselves not haul you off to court? Is it not they who blaspheme the noble name that was invoked over you?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">When we are silent on moral issues so as not to ruffle the feathers of unbelievers, we are actually empowering them to oppress all Christians when someone <em>does <\/em>speak up.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ. (Gal 1:10)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">On the other hand, I think there are many Catholics who are in fact comfortable asserting the moral truths of our faith&#8230; but are speechless when it comes to talking about <em>Jesus <\/em>Himself. Do you speak His name in public? Are you afraid to share how He has touched you, changed you, healed you? Do you share His words with others? Do you propose Him as the Savior&#8230; or as an option among many, such as in the Gospel?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8220;Who do people say that I am?\u201d They said in reply, \u201cJohn the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Who do you say Jesus is? Because if you believe who He says He is\u2014God, Creator, Savior\u2014then how can you <em>not <\/em>speak of Him?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father\u2019s glory with the holy angels. (Mark 8:38)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This is precisely what Pope Francis is challenging the Church to once again, to proclaim its &#8220;first love&#8221;: Jesus.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span class=\"pullquote pullquote-processed\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>The church\u2019s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently&#8230;. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The proposal of the Gospel must be more simple, profound, radiant. It is from this proposition that the moral consequences then flow<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. \u2014POPE FRANCIS, AmericaMagazine.org, Sept. 30, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The Pope is calling every Catholic to a renewed encounter with Jesus <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13837_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13837_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13837_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13837_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13837_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13837_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf<em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/francesco\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium_en.html#_ftn3\">Evangelii Gaudium<\/a>, <\/em>n. 3<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13837_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13837_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> that in turn compels us to bring Him to others.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But it is tempting to keep one&#8217;s lamp hidden beneath the bushel basket, is it not? Everyone&#8217;s happy. There is less debating and arguing. Everyone&#8217;s tolerating each other&#8230; or so it all seems. In truth, a people in darkness are a people deprived of true peace, of light\u2014and this only leads to more darkness in individuals, families, and nations. Is this not evident, that as the flame of faith is going out in the world, immorality and evil are spreading exponentially? Jesus said, &#8220;<em>You are the light of the world&#8230; Just so, your light must shine before others.&#8221; <\/em><span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13837_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13837_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13837_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13837_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13837_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13837_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Matt 5:14<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13837_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13837_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The light that must shine before others is not only our deeds, but also the proclamation that Jesus Christ is Lord; that He is merciful, loving, and the personal Savior of every individual.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>&#8230;otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.<\/strong> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, ibid.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">If you and I are ashamed, if we are afraid to speak up, to proclaim Jesus <em>&#8220;in season and out,&#8221; <\/em><span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13837_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13837_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13837_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13837_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13837_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13837_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. 2 Tim 4:2<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13837_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13837_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> then our fear can be counted in lost souls\u2014and we in turn will have to give an account of our silence on Judgment Day.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The most important question then is, <em>why am I ashamed to speak of Jesus? <\/em>Or rather, how do I overcome this fear? The answer is to fall more deeply in love with Him. As it says in the Psalm today:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears&#8230; Look to him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em>&#8220;Perfect love drives out all fear&#8221;<\/em>, said St. John. When we follow Jesus, renouncing self-love, we make room for Him who is love&#8230; and fear begins to evaporate like snow in the springtime.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self- control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord&#8230; (2 Tim 1:7)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">That is the key to the zeal of the saints and courage of the martyrs: He was and is their strength.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes&#8230; I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me&#8230;.
