{"id":13917,"date":"2014-02-24T00:00:41","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T06:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/?p=13917"},"modified":"2017-04-17T22:00:15","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T02:00:15","slug":"the-beginning-of-ecumenism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-beginning-of-ecumenism\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beginning of Ecumenism","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">THE NOW WORD ON MASS READINGS<br \/> for February 24th, 2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"CENTER\">Liturgical texts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/022414.cfm\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Slice-1_003.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"275\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Slice-2_003.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script>(function(d, s, id) {\n  var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];\n  if (d.getElementById(id)) return;\n  js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id;\n  js.src = \"\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\";\n  fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);\n}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));<\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>ECUMENISM. <\/strong>Now there&#8217;s a word that, ironically, can start wars.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, those subscribed to my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/subscribe\/\">weekly reflections<\/a> received <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-coming-wave-of-unity\/\">The Coming Wave of Unity<\/a>. <\/em>It speaks of the coming unity that Jesus prayed for\u2014that we would &#8220;all be one&#8221;\u2014and was affirmed by a video of Pope Francis praying for this unity. Predictably, this has created confusion among many. &#8220;This is the beginning of the one world religion!&#8221; say some; others, &#8220;This is what I have been praying for, for years!&#8221; And yet others, &#8220;I am not sure if this is a good or a bad thing&#8230;.&#8221; Suddenly, I hear again the question that Jesus directed to the Apostles: &#8220;<em>Who do you say I am?<\/em>&#8221; But this time, I hear it re-phrased to refer to His body, the Church: &#8220;<em>Who do you say My Church is?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In today&#8217;s Gospel, The disciples and scribes were arguing when Jesus descended from Mount Tabor after the Transfiguration. Perhaps it was an extension of what was being discussed a few verses earlier in the Gospel of Mark:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Elijah will indeed come first and restore all things, yet how is it written regarding the Son of Man that he must suffer greatly and be treated with contempt? (Mark 9:12)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You see, the scribes expected Elijah to come and bring about an era of peace and justice in which a political Messiah would overthrow the Romans and restore Jewish rule. The Apostles, on the other hand, had just been told that the Messiah must &#8220;suffer and die.&#8221; And then there was the &#8220;large crowd&#8221; surrounding them who, when they saw Jesus, were &#8220;utterly amazed&#8221;\u2014to them, He was simply a miracle-maker. So much confusion over Christ&#8217;s mission!<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said, <em>&#8220;I am the way, the truth, and the life&#8221;<\/em>\u2014not just, I am the way, or merely, I am the truth\u2014but all three. We should therefore see these reflected in His mystical body as well. To be certain, there are some who say that the Church is merely the &#8220;way&#8221; of Christ, that is, of social justice and preference for the poor\u2014and that is all that is necessary. Then there are those who say that all that is necessary is a strict adherence to her doctrines, to the &#8220;truth.&#8221; And yet others say that the Church is all about experiencing the &#8220;life&#8221; of Christ in the charisms, worship, and experience of prayer. The problem lies not in these particular visions of the Church&#8217;s mission, but rather in the myopic notion that excludes one or the other.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s readings affirm that <em>all three visions <\/em>are part of the Church&#8217;s mission and identity<em>: <\/em> We are all called to live our faith through good works to bring about justice and peace in our world\u2014the &#8220;way&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The foundation of our good works are the precepts and commandments of God found in Sacred Tradition\u2014the &#8220;truth&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">The decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (Today&#8217;s Psalm)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And the power of the truth is demonstrated through the charisms and incarnated through prayer and intimacy with God\u2014the &#8220;life&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Everything is possible to one who has faith. (Today&#8217;s Gospel)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is clear then, is it not, where the wars and &#8220;<em>jealousy and selfish ambition<\/em>&#8221; between us come from? A lack of <em>humility, <\/em>of <em>obedience<\/em> to the commandments, and of <em>faith<\/em> in the power of God.
