They have eyes to see, but cannot see; ears to hear, but cannot understand. How often they want to remake Christ&#8217;s mission into their own image of what it should be! But He continues to present them with paradox after paradox, contradiction after contradiction&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him&#8230; If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all&#8230; Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The Apostles, and most everyone else, were <em>scandalized<\/em> because Jesus seemed to distort the role of Messiah or compromise the Jewish tradition. He called tax collectors to become the foundation of the Church without asking for a resum\u00e9. He reached out to prostitutes, praised Samaritans, healed on the Sabbath, and openly dined and dialogued with scoundrels like Zacchaeus&#8230; Yes, Jesus was an absolute disaster for those who wanted to see a Super-Scribe and Paragon-Priest for their Messiah; a man who would damn the Romans, demonize the pagans, and condemn anyone who didn&#8217;t fall into line. But what&#8217;s this? He&#8217;s holding children? Praising pagan&#8217;s faith? Dialoguing with women and thieves? Welcoming them into Paradise? And He\u2014the Messiah\u2014is hanging upon a cross? God\u2014crucified??<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">I tell you, things have not changed much, not much at all. The internet is alight right now with Catholics who, like the Apostles, cannot grasp the <em>signs of the times<\/em>. They want a Pope who will stick it to the liberals! Damn the heretics! Burn the modernists at the stake! But what&#8217;s this? He&#8217;s meeting atheists? Shaking hands with pagans? Reaching out to Muslims? Dining and dialoguing&#8230; with Protestants? <em>Protestants!!?<\/em> His papacy is an absolute disaster to them.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">And yet, like Jesus, Pope Francis has not changed <em>one<\/em> single letter of the law. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13947_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13947_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. What, then, does he want us to understand about his pastoral approach in general? It seems to me that he first wishes to have people set aside every obstacle which they imagine to prevent them from responding with faith. He wants, above all, that they see Christ and receive His personal invitation to be one with Him in the Church.<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Raymond Burke, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osservatoreromano.va\/en\/news\/popes-radical-call-new-evangelization#.Uwgi3TK9KSO\">L&#8217;Osservatore Romano<\/a>, <\/em>Feb. 21, 2014<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>This is the novelty: a great pastoral vein that does not lose the moral and doctrinal stature. I believe this is the key to understand the Pontiff.<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Poli, Pope Francis&#8217; successor in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Feb. 24th. 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenit.org\/en\/articles\/pope-s-successor-in-buenos-aires-reflects-on-a-church-that-comes-close-thanks-to-francis-closeness?utm_campaign=dailyhtml&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=dispatch\">Zenit.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Jesus said he came to do the Father&#8217;s will, not His own. Indeed, the Pharisees mocked Christ&#8217;s goodness and insisted rather that He was &#8220;possessed by Beelzebul.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13947_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13947_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. (First reading)<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Unity among the <em>Apostles<\/em> broke down as soon as they became proud.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all&#8230; (Gospel)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Unity among the <em>early Christians<\/em> began to dissolve as soon as they became worldly.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? &#8230;Therefore, whoever wants to be a lover of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Unity among the <em>churches<\/em> broke down as soon as faith in Christ&#8217;s Word that <em>He <\/em>would build His Church\u2014even upon the weaknesses of Peter\u2014was lost. Yes, Martin Luther lost faith in Christ&#8217;s promise; he could not see past the <em>scandals <\/em>of the day to the Spirit at work in the cross of human nature\u2014and he became a schismatic.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Today, I am alarmed at the number of &#8220;conservative&#8221; Catholics who have likewise lost faith in Jesus who continues to build His Church, not on sand, but on the rock of Peter to whom He said: <em>&#8220;I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13947_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13947_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. They have decided that the pastoral approach of Pope Francis is decidedly wrong, and therefore, declared him to be a false prophet. They have discarded oral and written tradition for false and speculative prophecies. They have, in one fell swoop, through mistrust and suspicion, thrown Matthew 16 and the keys of the kingdom into the dust bin of history.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">I hear again, louder and louder, the words that I heard in my heart after Benedict XVI resigned, that we are <em>&#8220;entering into dangerous days&#8221; <\/em>and <em> &#8220;great confusion.&#8221; <\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_13947_1('footnote_plugin_reference_13947_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_13947_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13947_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/understanding-francis\/\">Understanding Francis<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_13947_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_13947_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> I hear St. Paul crying out again&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Whoever teaches something different and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the religious teaching is conceited, understanding nothing, and has a morbid disposition for arguments and verbal disputes.
