But then, you should not be surprised if you are treated as the prophets were.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more-->Today&#8217;s Gospel is actually kind of humorous. For Jesus tells His listeners that <em>&#8220;no prophet is accepted in his own native place.&#8221;<\/em> His proofs were so searing that they wanted to throw Him off the cliff straight away. Case in point, eh?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">While last Friday I focused on the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/a-prophetic-life\/\">prophetic life<\/a><\/em> we are called to live, that does not mean that words are not necessary. Again, <em>&#8220;faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14404_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14404_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14404_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14404_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14404_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14404_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Without the Holy Spirit, the most convincing dialect has no power over the heart of man.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014POPE PAUL VI, <em>Hearts Aflame: The Holy Spirit at the Heart of Christian Life Today<\/em> by Alan Schreck<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em>&#8220;For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power,&#8221;<\/em> said St. Paul. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14404_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14404_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14404_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14404_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14404_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14404_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. 1 Cor 4:20<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_14404_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14404_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> This power comes to us through <em>prayer<\/em> and meditation on God&#8217;s Word.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>&#8230;before preparing what we will actually say when preaching, we need to let ourselves be penetrated by that word which will also penetrate others, for it is a living and active word, like a sword&#8230;<\/strong> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, <em>Evangelii Gaudium, <\/em>n. 150<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Prayer is what allows us to<em> &#8220;be strengthened with might through his Spirit in the inner man&#8230; that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14404_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14404_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14404_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14404_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14404_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14404_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Eph. 3:16-17<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_14404_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14404_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> It is Christ, then, living <em>in<\/em> you who &#8220;speaks&#8221; His word <em>through<\/em> you as you invite the Lord, as in the Psalm today, to<em> &#8220;Send forth your light&#8221; <\/em>through your mouth and witness. Then you are indeed no longer speaking mere words, but wielding the sword of the Spirit.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This is when your witness becomes, again, <em>prophetic <\/em>in the truest sense of the word. So, some will embrace what you say\u2014others will want to throw you off the cliff. For the same Christ living in you now is the same Christ of the Gospels:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">I have come to bring not peace but the sword. (Matt 10:34)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But do not judge at this point what God is doing! Take Naaman in today&#8217;s first reading. He rejected the words of the prophet at first. But when his servants later challenged him, his heart was ready to receive the word in <em>faith<\/em>. And he was healed. When you plant the seed of God&#8217;s word, it may only be years later that other &#8220;servants&#8221; water it. And poof\u2014it germinates!<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">I remember a nun who wrote me a couple years ago. She said she passed on one of my writings to her nephew. He wrote her back and told her to never ever send that &#8220;garbage&#8221; again (good thing he and I weren&#8217;t near a cliff that day.) But she said, a year later, he entered into the Catholic faith&#8230; <em>and it was that writing that began it all. <\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Don&#8217;t be afraid to be God&#8217;s prophets today! Don&#8217;t worry about cliffs and stones\u2014God will never leave your side. Decrease, so He may increase. Learn to pray, and pray with your heart. Speak His words, in and out of season. And then leave the harvest to Him, for He says&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but shall do what pleases me, achieving the end for which I sent it.
