Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses, that He was Michael the archangel. Others, that He is just a historical figure, and yet others, a mere myth.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But Jesus is God.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more-->Only a selective reading of the Bible, or an intentional distortion of the written Word, changes what is clearly written. After a long debate with the Jews, it is only when Jesus reveals for certain His <em>identity<\/em> that they suddenly wish to stone Him:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM. (Today&#8217;s Gospel)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Jesus uses the term &#8220;I AM&#8221;, which in Hebrew means <em> Yahweh\u2014<\/em>the name God designated to Himself before Moses in Sinai:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">I AM who I AM. (Ex 3:14)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So it was blasphemous to the unbelieving Jews who immediately wanted to kill Him. They had another chance in the Garden of Gethsemane, where again, Jesus applies the name <em>Yaweh<\/em> to Himself\u2014and with no little affect on His listeners:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">\u201cWhom are you looking for?\u201d They answered him, \u201cJesus the Nazorean.\u201d He said to them, \u201cI AM\u201d&#8230; When he said to them, \u201cI AM,\u201d they turned away and fell to the ground. (Jn 18:5-6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The truth that Jesus, the &#8220;Word of God&#8221;, existed before all creation was clearly expounded by the Apostle John, who opened His Gospel saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and <em>the Word was God<\/em>. (John 1:1)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">And in John&#8217;s Apocalypse, Jesus applies a title to himself that was used by God in the book of Isaiah where He says, &#8220;I am the first, I am the last; there is no God but me.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14643_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14643_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14643_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14643_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14643_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14643_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Is 44:6<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_14643_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14643_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Several times, Jesus used the same designation:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last. (Rev 1:17; see also 1:8; 2:8; and 22:12\u201313)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Remarkably, without even seeing Jesus, Elizabeth prophetically identified the child in her cousin Mary&#8217;s womb, calling Him &#8220;my Lord.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14643_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14643_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14643_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14643_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14643_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14643_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. So then the question really becomes, <em>what did the early Church believe before the Bible even came into being in the 4th century?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Ignatius, also called Theophorus, to the Church at Ephesus in Asia&#8230; chosen through true suffering by the will of the Father in Jesus Christ our God&#8230; For our God, Jesus Christ, was conceived by Mary..<\/strong>. \u2014Ignatius of Antioch (A.D. 110) <em>Letter to the Ephesians, <\/em>1, 18:2 <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>&#8230;Jesus Christ our Lord and God and Savior and King&#8230;<\/strong> \u2014St. Irenaeus, <em>Against Heresies <\/em>1:10:1, (A.D. 189)<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>He alone is both God and man, and the source of all our good things. <\/strong>\u2014Clement of Alexandria, <em>Exhortation to the Greeks <\/em>1:7:1, (A.D. 190) <\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Although he was God, he took flesh; and having been made man, he remained what he was: God.<\/strong> \u2014Origen, <em>The Fundamental Doctrines, <\/em>1:0:4, (A.D. 225).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Indeed, the God who made a covenant with Abraham descended Himself in the flesh to bring about the new and everlasting covenant\u2014Jesus, the second person of the Holy Trinity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono;
