It was never meant to go out. This is the task of Our Blessed Mother and the Holy Spirit in this time of mercy: to bring about the life of Jesus within us, the light of the world. Here is the kind of fire that must burn in our parishes again:<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">As they prayed, the place where they were gathered shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Or does Blessed John Henry Newman, rather, describe the Church in many places today?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Satan may adopt the more alarming weapons of deceit\u2014he may hide himself\u2014he may attempt to seduce us in little things, and so to move the Church, not all at once, but by little and little from her true position. I do believe he has done much in this way in the course of the last few centuries\u2026 It is his policy to split us up and divide us, to dislodge us gradually from our rock of strength.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014<em> Sermon IV: The Persecution of Antichrist<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">What is our &#8216;true position&#8217;, our center? Is it to raise funds for parish programs? To be able to quote the Catechism? To volunteer at the food bank? To be a lector or usher at Mass? To be a Knights of Columbus or CWL member? As good as these things are, they are not the center\u2014they are not the <span class=\"st\"><em>raison d&#8217;\u00eatre<\/em><\/span> of the Church. <em>We exist in order to evangelize<\/em>, wrote Paul VI. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14913_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14913_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14913_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14913_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14913_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14913_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/paul_vi\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/hf_p-vi_exh_19751208_evangelii-nuntiandi_en.html\">Evangelii Nuntiandi<\/a><\/em>, n. 14<\/span><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_14913_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14913_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> We exist to bring the light of Jesus into the darkness that today pervades politics, commerce, science, food production, and education. But we cannot bring a light we do not have. The very center, then, is <em>Jesus<\/em>. He must be at the heart of everything we do, the source of our strength, the summit of our goals. We should appear as radical to the world\u2014but it&#8217;s really just normal Christianity. The Acts of the Apostles should be the norm.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Reading the Acts of the Apostles helps us to realize that at the beginning of the Church the mission <i>ad gentes <\/i>(to the nations)&#8230; was in fact considered the normal outcome of Christian living, to which every believer was committed through the witness of personal conduct and through explicit proclamation whenever possible.<\/strong> \u2014ST. JOHN PAUL II, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_07121990_redemptoris-missio_en.html\">Redemptoris Missio<\/a>, <\/em>Encyclical, n. 27<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">How do I bring this Light into the world? I dare say we have forgotten. We have lost our way! We know how to keep the parish lights on but not the light of our hearts, that which <em>truly <\/em>draws souls back to Christ. We must be truly<em> born again!<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one is born of water and Spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. (Today&#8217;s Gospel)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Many Catholics have been born of water in baptism, but we must also be born of the Spirit. And the Holy Spirit &#8220;sealed in the soul&#8221; in the Sacrament of Confirmation is released, like a<em> river of living water<\/em>, when we enter into an <em>encounter<\/em> with God.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">Blessed are all who take refuge in the Lord. (Psalm response)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Our hearts are like a battery. The charge within them remains dormant until a <em>connection <\/em>is made, and <em>then power flows. <\/em>Just as a battery has two poles, we <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/glowing-green-battery-charging_000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"129\" height=\"273\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>must also make two connections.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">We must <em>first <\/em>connect our hearts to God through prayer\u2014not empty words\u2014but sighs and groans, pleas and praise from the heart. It could be summarized in one word: <em>desire<\/em>. Hunger for God. <em>Second, <\/em> we must connect to our neighbor in authentic love. Yes, when we love and serve our neighbor, then the connection to God finds its outlet\u2014and power flows.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">These are the two poles that bring the dead soul to life; that energize the heart and bring vision and purpose to the mind; that literally transform us into beacons of spiritual light and true apostles. <em>Oh how we need Christians like this today!<\/em> You, beloved readers, are chosen by God for this purpose. Say &#8220;yes&#8221; to God, &#8220;yes&#8221; to Mary, &#8220;yes&#8221; to the Holy Spirit so that Jesus may reign through you.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span
