Perhaps the closest Jesus comes to it is when He says, <em>&#8220;This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14942_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14942_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14942_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14942_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14942_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14942_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Jn 13:35<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_14942_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14942_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\">And yet, after Pentecost, the very first thing the believers did was form organized communities. Almost instinctively&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em><!--more--><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the Apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">These Christian communities became the place where both spiritual and material needs were met since, <em>&#8220;no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common&#8230; There was no needy person among them.<\/em>&#8221; In these communities, they prayed, broke bread, shared the Lord&#8217;s Supper, learned the Apostles&#8217; teachings, and encountered <em>love. <\/em>As it says in today&#8217;s Psalm, &#8220;holiness befits your house.&#8221; Indeed, the early Christian communities became a transcendent sign to the world around them as they forsook everything for the Gospel, even their very lives. They witnessed this spirit of poverty and detachment by their unity, solicitude for the poor, mercy toward sinners, and display of the power of God in signs and wonders:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">The community of believers was of one heart and mind&#8230; With great power the Apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So powerful became the witness of the <em>community<\/em>, that its structure became instrinsic to the growth of the Church. And yet, where does Jesus speak of these communities?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Well, He <em>did <\/em>point toward the power and necessity of community by being born into one: the <em>family<\/em>. And when He emerged from the desert <em>&#8220;in the power of the Spirit,&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14942_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14942_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14942_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14942_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14942_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14942_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Lk 3:14<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_14942_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14942_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Jesus formed the community of the Twelve Apostles. In fact, this little band of men were a hint at the coming <em>sacramental <\/em>nature that would belong to Christian community:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matt 18:20)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Thus, one could say that community is an &#8220;eighth sacrament&#8221; since Our Lord says He will be &#8220;in the midst of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span class=\"text\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">The Church in this world is the sacrament of salvation, the sign and the instrument of the communion of God and men.<\/span><\/strong> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/em>n. 780<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">All this is to say that the present crisis in the Church today, especially in Western nations, is a crisis of <em>community. <\/em>For the Second Vatican Council taught:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">&#8230;the Christian community will become a sign of God\u2019s presence in the world. <\/span><\/strong>\u2014<em>Ad Gentes Divinitus<\/em>, Vatican II, n.15<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The absence of authentic communities, then, is a portent of the condition of the Church&#8217;s faith.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>In our days, when in vast areas of the world the faith is in danger of dying out like a flame which no longer has fuel, the overriding priority is to make God present in this world and to show men and women the way to God\u2026 <\/strong>\u2014<em>Letter of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to All the Bishops of the World<\/em>, March 10, 2009; Catholic Online<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Many no longer believe because they no longer &#8220;taste and see the goodness of the Lord&#8221; present in their midst through authentic Christian community; for the body of Christ itself has become fractured by individualism<em>. <\/em>Our parishes, by and large, have become impersonal institutions that remain empty most of the week, devoid of those apostolic signs that mark the presence of the Spirit: true fraternity, a love of the Word of God, the exercise of the charisms, missionary zeal, and the increase in converts and vocations. The void has been filled, says Pope Francis, with &#8216;worldliness&#8217; and &#8216;adulterated forms of Christianity.&#8217; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_14942_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14942_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_14942_1('footnote_plugin_reference_14942_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_14942_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14942_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em>Evangelii Gaudium, <\/em>n. 94<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_14942_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_14942_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Hoefler Text; font-size: small;\"><strong>And thus, even against our will, the thought rises in the mind that now those days draw near of which Our Lord prophesied: \u201cAnd because sin has abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold\u201d<\/strong> (Matt. 24:12)<strong>.<\/strong> \u2014POPE PIUS XI, <em>Miserentissimus Redemptor<\/em>, Encyclical on Reparation to the Sacred Heart, n. 17\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">And so they are coming: new communities, set afire with the &#8220;flame of love&#8221; and <em>necessity <\/em>that will become homes for the hurting and field hospitals for the broken. They will come, as I wrote in<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-convergence-and-the-blessing\/\"> The Convergence and the Blessing<\/a><\/em>, by the power of the Holy Spirit through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Be open to Christ, welcome the Spirit, so that a new Pentecost may take place in every community! Soon there will be a multitude of communities founded on adoration and presence to the poor, linked to each other and to the great communities of the church, which are themselves being renewed and have already been journeying for years and sometimes centuries. A new church is indeed being born&#8230; The love of God is both tenderness and fidelity. Our world is waiting for communities of tenderness and fidelity.
