That God is working each and every moment toward the fulfillment of that plan? When people look up at the clouds floating by, few think of the near infinite expanse of galaxies and planetary systems that lay beyond. They see clouds, a bird, a storm, and continue on without reflecting on the mystery lying beyond the heavens. Soo too, few souls look beyond the present day triumphs and storms and realize that they are leading toward the fulfillment of Christ&#8217;s promises, expressed in today&#8217;s Gospel:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">In the first reading, we see Christ&#8217;s plan for <em>unity among all peoples<\/em> beginning to unfold, as some of the first Gentiles begin to enter the Church. And the key word here is <em>beginning. <\/em>For there is a logical question that arises: how far and long must the plan of Christ extend until it reaches fulfillment? There are three answers to this question found in the Scriptures, Sacred Tradition, and the voice of the Magisterium:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong>I.<\/strong> Until all the nations acknowledge Jesus as Lord. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Isa 11:9-10; Matt 24:14<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong>II.<\/strong> Until there is universal peace. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Isa 11:4-6; Rev 20:1-6<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong>III.<\/strong> Until the Church follows her Lord in His &#8220;death and resurrection.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Eph 5 :27; Rev 20:6<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">And lest anyone think that these are rogue interpretations of Scripture, listen to the voice of Christ in the mind of the Church:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>\u201cAnd they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd.\u201d May God\u2026 shortly bring to fulfillment His prophecy for transforming this consoling vision of the future into a present reality\u2026 <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>It is God\u2019s task to bring about this happy <em>hour<\/em> and to make it known to all\u2026 When it does arrive, it will turn out to be a solemn <em>hour<\/em>, one big with consequences not only for the restoration of the Kingdom of Christ, but for the pacification of\u2026 the world. We pray most fervently, and ask others likewise to pray for this much-desired pacification of society.<\/strong> \u2014POPE PIUS XI,<em> Ubi Arcani dei Consilioi \u201cOn the Peace of Christ in his Kingdom\u201d<\/em>, December 23, 1922<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>The unity of the world will be. The dignity of the human person shall be recognized not only formally but effectively. The inviolability of life, from the womb to old age\u2026 Undue social inequalities will be overcome. The relations between peoples will be peaceful, reasonable and fraternal. Neither selfishness, nor arrogance, nor poverty\u2026 [shall] prevent the establishment of a true human order, a common good, a new civilization. <\/strong>\u2014POPE PAUL VI, Urbi et Orbi Message, April 4th, 1971<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This is precisely the teaching of the early Church Fathers: that the kingdom of God will reign to the ends of the earth, though not in that perfection reserved only for Heaven, but in fulfillment of Christ&#8217;s promise that he will be the sole and Good Shepherd over all the nations.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>S<\/strong><strong>o, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-convergence-and-the-blessing\/\">blessing<\/a> foretold undoubtedly refers to <em>the time of His Kingdom<\/em><\/strong>\u2026 <strong>Those who saw John, the Lord\u2019s disciple, [tell us] that they heard from him how the Lord taught and spoke about these times\u2026<\/strong> \u2014St. Irenaeus of Lyons, Church Father (140\u2013202 A.D.); <em>Adversus Haereses<\/em>, Irenaeus of Lyons, V.33.3.4,<em> The Fathers of the Church<\/em>, CIMA Publishing<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">It is a &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-convergence-and-the-blessing\/\">blessing<\/a>&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_15218_1('footnote_plugin_reference_15218_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-convergence-and-the-blessing\/\">The Convergence and the Blessing<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_15218_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_15218_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> that will come about, as it did in today&#8217;s first reading, <em>by the power of the Holy Spirit. <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: Courier New,Courier,mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;and I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, \u2018John baptized with water but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.\u2019 <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000066;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\">\u2026at the \u201cend time\u201d the Lord\u2019s Spirit will renew the hearts of men, <em>engraving a new law<\/em> in them. He will gather and reconcile the scattered and divided peoples; he will transform the first creation, and God will dwell there with men in peace<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/em>n. 715<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But lest we be overcome with euphoria and tempted toward a &#8220;new millenarianism,&#8221; St. John reminds us that man&#8217;s fallen nature will always accompany him until the end of the world: the peace and unity to come is only temporary (see Rev 20:7-8). (Matt 24:14)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">So brothers and sisters, look beyond the clouds of this moment, beyond the temporal and transitory things of this world, toward the present and imminent plan of God unfolding right now, that is bringing the Church into a&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">&#8230;<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong> \u201cnew and divine\u201d holiness with which the Holy Spirit wishes to enrich Christians at the dawn of the third millennium, in order to make Christ the heart of the world.<\/strong> \u2014ST.
