The readings of the Mass are arranged in three year cycles, and so are different each year. Personally, I think it is a &#8220;sign of the times&#8221; how this year&#8217;s readings are lining up with our times&#8230;. Just saying.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Today&#8217;s first reading <em>is the crack of thunder<\/em>, following that lightning <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/LightningVatican2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"263\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>bolt that struck St. Peter&#8217;s dome in Rome at 6pm, February 11th, 2013. And what do we hear reverberating in that thunder?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Why did Jesus come to earth? Why did God send His only Son to suffer terribly at our hands? Why was the Church, born from His bloody side, brought into being?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">An angel appeared to St. Joseph, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But you see, it is not a matter of merely being forgiven, but being <em>healed <\/em>from the effects of sin, freed from the <em>slavery <\/em>of sin, whose effects can linger long after the confessional.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">I have often said, if you want to know how <em>serious <\/em>sin is, look at the Cross. Look at the antidote. It was not a mere man, but God himself who was <em>required<\/em> to suffer and die so as to <em>take away our sins. <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. (1 Pet 2:24)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Jesus&#8217; death made freedom from sin and its ill effects possible. The mission of the Church is to not only make this good news known, but to make these healing graces available through the Sacraments. We should be filled with such joy from <em>our own experience with these divine encounters, <\/em>that we want to shout, like today&#8217;s Psalmist, to everyone around the great hope that awaits them.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor. (Today&#8217;s Psalm)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">We should be shouting: <em>Jesus is in the Sacraments! Jesus is with us! He is here to liberate us!<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But <em>woe<\/em> to those bishops and laymen who want to keep men in the dust;<em> woe<\/em> to those who tell those impoverished by their sin that the dunghill is a suitable home; <em>woe<\/em> to those who keep hidden by their silence the graces bought in Blood; <em>woe<\/em> to those who diminish the sacrifice Christ made to liberate us from the powers of hell.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">For Christ, forseeing the death He would endure, sighed in holy anger as he spoke in today&#8217;s Gospel:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah&#8230; At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.
