{"id":16961,"date":"2014-10-31T02:25:58","date_gmt":"2014-10-31T08:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/?p=16961"},"modified":"2017-04-17T22:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T02:00:00","slug":"the-thin-line-between-mercy-heresy-part-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-thin-line-between-mercy-heresy-part-i\/","title":{"rendered":"The Thin Line Between Mercy &amp; Heresy &#8211; Part I","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"CENTER\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/CATERS_CLIFF_EDGE_WALK_Fotor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"623\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><br \/>IN <\/strong>all the controversies that unfolded in the wake of the recent Synod in Rome, the reason for the gathering seemed to have been lost altogether. It was convened under the theme: &#8220;Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization.&#8221; How do we <em>evangelize<\/em> families given the pastoral challenges we face due to high divorce rates, single mothers, secularization, and so forth?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">What we learned very quickly (as proposals of some Cardinals were made known to the public) is that there is a a thin line between mercy and heresy.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The following three part series is intended to not only get back to the heart of the matter\u2014evangelizing families in our times\u2014but to do so by bringing to the forefront the man who is really at the center of the controversies: Jesus Christ. Because no one walked that thin line more than Him\u2014and Pope Francis seems to be pointing that path to us once again.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">We need to blow away the &#8220;smoke of satan&#8221; so we can clearly identify this narrow red line, drawn in Christ&#8217;s blood&#8230; because we are called to walk it <em>ourselves<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">PART I &#8211; RADICAL LOVE<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">PUSHING BOUNDARIES<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">As Lord, Jesus was the law himself, having established it both in the natural law and the moral law of the Old and New covenants. He was the <em>&#8220;Word made flesh,&#8221;<\/em> and so wherever He walked defined the path that we are also to take\u2014every step, every word, every action, laid like paving stones.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">By this we may be sure that we are in him: he who says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. (1 John 2:5-6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Of course, He did not contradict himself, blazing a false path <em>contrary<\/em> to His word. <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Matthew_Fotor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"236\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>But where He went was scandalous to many, as they did not understand that the whole purpose of the law was <em>fulfilled in love<\/em>. It&#8217;s worth repeating again:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law. (Rom 13:19)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">What Jesus taught us is that His love is infinite, that nothing, absolutely nothing, not even death\u2014essentially what mortal sin is\u2014could separate us from His love. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_16961_1('footnote_plugin_reference_16961_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_16961_1('footnote_plugin_reference_16961_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_16961_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_16961_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Rom 3:38-39<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_16961_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_16961_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> However, <em>sin <\/em>can and does separate us from His <em>grace. <\/em>For even though<em> &#8220;God so loved the world,&#8221;<\/em> it is <em>&#8220;by grace you have been saved through faith.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_16961_1('footnote_plugin_reference_16961_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_16961_1('footnote_plugin_reference_16961_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_16961_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_16961_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Matt 1:21<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_16961_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_16961_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The bridge between His love and grace is <em>mercy. <\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">It was then, through His life, actions, and words that Jesus began to bewilder His followers by revealing the <em>extent<\/em> of His mercy&#8230; the extent to which <em>grace <\/em>would be given so as to retrieve the fallen and lost.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">THE STUMBLING BLOCK<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em>&#8220;We proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,&#8221;<\/em> said St. Paul. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_16961_1('footnote_plugin_reference_16961_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_16961_1('footnote_plugin_reference_16961_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_16961_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_16961_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">1 Cor 1:23<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_16961_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_16961_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> A stumbling block He was, for this same God who demanded that Moses remove his shoes on holy ground, was the same God who walked into sinner&#8217;s homes. The same Lord who forbade the Israelites from touching the unclean was the same Lord who let one wash His feet. The same God who <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/washingfeetofjesus_Fotor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"246\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"2\" \/>demanded that the Sabbath be a day of rest, was the same God who tirelessly healed the sick on that day. <em>And He declared:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. (Mark 2:27)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The fulfillment of the law is love. Thus, Jesus was precisely what Simeon the prophet said He would be: <em>a sign of contradiction\u2014<\/em>most especially to those who believed man was made to serve the law.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">They did not understand that God is the God of surprises, that God is always new; He never denies himself, never says that what He said was wrong, never, but He always surprises us&#8230;<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, Homily, October 13th, 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2014\/10\/13\/pope_at_santa_marta_holy_law_is_not_an_end_in_itself\/1108446\">Vatican Radio<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;surprises us <em>by His mercy. <\/em>Since the very beginning of his pontificate, Pope Francis also sees some in the Church in our times as &#8220;locked in the law&#8221;, so to speak. And so he asks the question:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Am I able to understand <em>the signs of the times<\/em> and be faithful to the voice of the Lord that is manifested in them? We should ask ourselves these questions today and ask the Lord for a heart that loves the law\u2014 because the law belongs to God\u2014 but which also loves God\u2019s surprises and the ability to understand that this holy law is not an end in itself.<\/strong> \u2014Homily, October 13th, 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2014\/10\/13\/pope_at_santa_marta_holy_law_is_not_an_end_in_itself\/1108446\">Vatican Radio<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The reaction of many today is precisely what it was in Christ&#8217;s time: &#8220;What? In a time of such <em>lawlessness<\/em> you are not stressing the law? When the people are in such darkness, you are not focused upon their sin?&#8221; It would seem to the Pharisees, who were &#8220;obsessed&#8221; with the law, that Jesus was in fact a heretic. And so, they tried to prove it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">One of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, \u201cTeacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?\u201d He said to him, \u201cYou shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.&#8221; (Matt 22:35-40)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What Jesus was revealing to the religious teachers is that the law without love (truth without charity), <em>could in itself<\/em> become a stumbling block, most especially to sinners&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>TRUTH AT THE SERVICE OF LOVE<\/p>\n<p>And so, Jesus proceeds, time and again, to reach out to sinners in the most unexpected way: without condemnation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. (John 3:17)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Jesus-Love_Fotor_000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"2\" \/>If the goal of the law is love, then Jesus wanted to reveal Himself as that goal <em>incarnate. <\/em>He came to them as the face of love so as to <em>attract<\/em> them to the Gospel&#8230; so as to compel them toward an inward desire and response of free will to love Him in return. And the word for that response is <em>repentance. <\/em>To love the Lord your God and your neighbour as yourself is to choose only those things that are in fact loving. That is the service of <em>truth<\/em>: to teach us how to love. But Jesus knew that, first of all, before anything else, we need to know that <em>we are loved. <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is this &#8220;first truth&#8221;, then, that has guided the blueprint for Pope Francis&#8217; vision for evangelization in the 21st century, elaborated in his Apostolic Exhortation, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html\">Evangelii Gaudium<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Pastoral ministry in a missionary style is not obsessed with the disjointed transmission of a multitude of doctrines to be insistently imposed. When we adopt a pastoral goal and a missionary style which would actually reach everyone without exception or exclusion, the message has to concentrate on the essentials, on what is most beautiful, most grand, most appealing and at the same time most necessary. The message is simplified, while losing none of its depth and truth, and thus becomes all the more forceful and convincing<\/strong>. \u2014POPE FRANCIS, <em>Evangelii Gaudium, <\/em>n. 35<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Those who did not bother to discover the context of Francis&#8217; words (those who, perhaps, opted for the headlines rather than his homilies) would have missed<em> the thin line between heresy and mercy<\/em> that is being traced out once again. And what is that? That truth is at the service of love.
