STEPHEN THE MARTYR<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong>THIS <\/strong>past year has seen what Pope Francis has rightly called the &#8220;brutal persecution&#8221; of Christians, particularly in Syria, Iraq, and Nigeria by Islamic jihadists. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_17459_1('footnote_plugin_reference_17459_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_17459_1('footnote_plugin_reference_17459_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_17459_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_17459_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/storyline\/isis-terror\/pope-francis-christmas-message-condemns-isis-brutal-persecution-n274711\">nbcnews.com<\/a>; martyrdom occurring this very minute of our brothers and sisters in the East and elsewhere, and the frequent &#8220;white&#8221; martyrdom of the faithful in the West, something beautiful is coming to light from this evil: the <em>contrast<\/em> of the witness of the Christian martyrs to that of the so-called &#8220;martyrdom&#8221; of religious extremists.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">In fact, in Christianity, the word <em>martyr<\/em> means &#8220;witness&#8221;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">THE CHRISTIAN MARTYR-WITNESS<\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/seven-words_Fotor_002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists force others into their creed,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs invite others to live theirs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists kill others in &#8220;service&#8221; to their faith,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em> Christian martyrs give their lives for the faith of others.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists strap bombs to themselves,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em> Christians martyrs fasten their wills to the Cross.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists blow up others for the &#8220;glory of God&#8221;,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs serve others to the point of death for God&#8217;s glory.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists demand allegiance, taxes, or one&#8217;s head,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs renounce their possessions and very lives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists pronounce others &#8220;infidels&#8221; as they slaughter,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs pronounce forgiveness of their executioners.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists arm and train children for war,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs become like little children. <\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists rape women and take them as slaves,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs die defending the dignity of the woman.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists often take many wives as concubines,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs often take a vow of chastity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists burn churches, hospitals, and schools<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em> Christian martyrs give their lives building them. <\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists fast and pray to bring about the victory of war,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs fast and pray to end wars. <\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists carry weapons,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs carry one another&#8217;s burdens<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists cover their faces like cowards,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs\u00a0boldly show the face of Christ<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists take away the liberty and freedom of others,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs sacrifice themselves for the freedom of others.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists grant clemency, only if one converts,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs claim Mercy as the reason for their conversion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists commit suicide for the pleasures of paradise,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs give their lives so that others may enter Heaven.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Religious extremists hate their enemies as a sign of their fidelity,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em>Christian martyrs love their enemies as a sign of their faith. <\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em> \u00a0<\/em>Religious extremists hold the sword as their banner,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\" align=\"LEFT\"><em> Christian martyrs raise the Cross as their standard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>I wish to invite young people to open their hearts to the Gospel and become Christ\u2019s witnesses;
