But there is a bigger context that I cannot help but continually point to. And it is that<em> the Church herself is preparing for her own Passion<\/em> as her persecutors continue to hem her in\u2014both those intent upon silencing her through a &#8220;dictatorship of relativism&#8221;, and those who would silence her by the sword\u2014literally. But it is precisely in this context that the path of joy is opening up for us:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross. (Heb 12:2)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Never before has the opportunity to become a saint been greater. An &#8220;era of peace&#8221; is coming, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_17895_1('footnote_plugin_reference_17895_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_17895_1('footnote_plugin_reference_17895_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_17895_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_17895_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-popes-and-a-dawning-new-age\/\">The Popes and the Dawning Era<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_17895_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_17895_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0and the adversary is helpless to stop it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>They will imprison very many persons, and will be guilty of more massacres. They will attempt to kill all priests and all the religious. But this shall not last long. People will imagine that all is lost; but the good God shall save all. It will be like a sign of the last judgment\u2026 Religion shall flourish again better than ever before.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014St. John Vianney,\u00a0<em>The Christian Trumpet\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">We must not treat this Lent as we often have in the past\u2014paying little attention to our souls (&#8220;Oh well, there&#8217;s always next year!&#8221;). The words of today&#8217;s first reading resound like a trumpet:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the Lord, your God, heeding his voice, and holding fast to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Another way to say it today is:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>No less than ordinary individual Catholics can survive, so ordinary Catholic families cannot survive. They have no choice. They must either be holy\u2014which means sanctified\u2014or they will disappear. The only Catholic families that will remain alive and thriving in the twenty-first century are the families of martyrs. <\/strong>\u2014Servant of God, Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.,<em> The Blessed Virgin and the Sanctification of the Family<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">We cannot be the Christians who stand in line for <em>Fifty Shades of Grey<\/em> or secretly read the book. We cannot be the Christians who stand in line for Communion, but ignore the gnawing hunger of the spiritually and materially poor. We cannot be the Christians who tolerate everything yet stand for nothing. Such a Christian is not a grain of wheat but an empty husk who will &#8220;disappear&#8221; through the purification that is here and coming. As one commentator said, <em>\u201cThose who choose to be married to the spirit of the world in this age, will be divorced in the next.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?\u201d (Today&#8217;s Gospel)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The secret to the joy that Jesus gives is this: to deny oneself<br \/>and take up one&#8217;s cross daily and follow Him\u2014which today, is directly against the powerful current of the<em> spirit of antichrist<\/em>. Hence, the words of today&#8217;s Psalm carry a certain urgency and warning against <em>compromise:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, but delights in the law of the LORD&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">If there ever was a Lent to turn off pagan television, avoid trashy websites, and meditate on God&#8217;s Word, it is this one. For in His Word, we will find the <em>path of\u00a0joy&#8230; <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father\u2019s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
