Like a wave reaching the shore that grows and grows until it becomes a huge tsunami, so too, there is a growing mob mentality toward the Church and freedom of speech. It was ten years ago that I wrote a warning of the coming persecution. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/persecution-spiritual-tsunami\/\">Persecution! &#8230; and the Moral Tsunami<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And now it&#8217;s here, on Western shores.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">For the zeitgeist has shifted; there is a growing boldness and intolerance sweeping through the courts, flooding the media, and spilling out onto the streets. Yes, the time is right to <em>silence\u00a0<\/em>the Church. These sentiments have existed for some time now, decades even. But what is new is that they have gained<em> the power of the mob,<\/em> and when it reaches this stage, the anger and intolerance begin to move very fast.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD. To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us, because his life is not like that of others, and different are his ways. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Jesus said if the world hated Him, then it will hate us. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Because Jesus is the &#8220;light of the world&#8221;, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. John 8:12<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> but then He also says of us: &#8220;<em>You<\/em> are the light of the world&#8221;. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. And&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. (John 3:19)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">You see, we carry no ordinary light. The light of the Christian is really the very presence of God within, a presence that pierces the heart, enlightens the conscience, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva; color: #000080;\"><strong>&#8220;Deep within his conscience man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself but which he must obey. Its voice, ever calling him to love and to do what is good and to avoid evil, sounds in his heart at the right moment. .\u00a0.\u00a0. For man has in his heart a law inscribed by God. .\u00a0.\u00a0. His conscience is man&#8217;s most secret core and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,\u00a0<\/em>n. 1776<\/span><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> and calls others to the right path.\u00a0As Pope Benedict said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>The Church\u2026 intends to continue to raise her voice in defense of mankind, even when policies of States and the majority of public opinion moves in the opposite direction. Truth, indeed, draws strength from itself and not from the amount of consent it arouses.<\/strong> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Vatican, March 20, 2006<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The strength of truth is that its source is Christ Himself. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_18645_1('footnote_plugin_reference_18645_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. John 14:6<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_18645_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_18645_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And thus, Jesus says to the people who tried to pretend that He was not the Messiah, tried to pretend that <em>they did not recognize the truth:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">You know me and also know where I am from. (Today&#8217;s Gospel)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Therefore, it is ultimately <em>Jesus-in-us<\/em> whom they persecute:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Brothers and sisters, long have been the warnings to prepare for the hour that is now upon the Church, the hour of her &#8220;final confrontation&#8221; with the spirit of this age. The mobs have lit their torches and raised their pitchforks&#8230; but Jesus tells you to raise your eyes.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. (Luke 21:28)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">He will be our help, He will be our hope, and He will be our deliverer. What groom wouldn&#8217;t be for his bride?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them&#8230; Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all the LORD delivers him.
