It follows in the wake of a generation that is almost entirely un-catechized on the truth, beauty, and goodness of our bodies and their God-designed functions. The following series of writings is a frank discussion <\/i><i>on the subject that will cover questions regarding\u00a0<\/i><em>alternative forms of marriage, masturbation, sodomy, oral sex, etc. Because the world is discussing these issues every day on radio, television and the internet. Does the Church have nothing to say on these matters? How do we respond? Indeed, she does\u2014she has something beautiful to say.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe truth will set you free,\u201d Jesus said. Perhaps this is no more true than in matters of human sexuality. This series is recommended for mature readers&#8230; First published in June, 2015.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>LIVING<\/b> on the farm, the fecundity of life is everywhere. On any given day, you could walk out the back door and see horses or cattle mating, cats purring for a partner, pollen blowing off a Spruce tree, or bees pollinating flowers. The impetus to create life is written in every living creature. In fact, in most of the animal and plant kingdom, creatures and organisms exist, as it were, to reproduce, propagate, and do it all over again the next year. Sex is an integral and beautiful part of creation. It is a living miracle day in and day out as we witness before our very eyes the powerful &#8220;Word&#8221; at the dawn of creation continuing to ripple throughout the universe:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;let them abound on the earth, and be fertile and multiply on it. (Gen 1:17)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>THE LAW OF LIFE<\/p>\n<p>After creating the world and filling it with life, God said He would do something even greater. And that is create something, or rather, <i>someone<\/i> who would be made in His very image.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Gen 1:27)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Like the rest of creation, the human race was conceived according to the &#8220;rhythm of nature&#8221; with the command to \u201cbe fertile and multiply\u201d but with the addition to &#8220;fill the earth and <i>subdue it.\u201d <\/i><span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Gen 1:28<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Mankind, sharing in the very nature of God, was set as steward and master over all creation\u2014and that mastery includes, therefore, his very own created body.<\/p>\n<p>What was his body intended for? To <i>be fertile and multiply. <\/i>Clearly, our genitals bear a truth all on their own. That is to say that a \u201cnatural law\u201d is written in creation, written into our very bodies.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>The natural law is nothing other than the light of understanding placed in us by God; through it we know what we must do and what we must avoid. God has given this light or law at the creation.<\/b><\/span> \u2014<i>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/i>n. 1955<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And that law says that our sexuality is foremost for reproduction. A man produces seed; a woman produces an egg; and when united, the man and woman produce a unique <i>life<\/i>. Therefore, the natural law<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/embryo-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"243\" data-position=\"3\" \/><\/p>\n<p>dictates that our sexual organs are designed to reproduce life. That is a simple law patterned generally throughout all of creation, and man is no exception to it.<\/p>\n<p>However, what would happen if the animal and plant kingdom disobeyed the laws by which they are governed? What if they ceased to follow the instincts by which they are driven? What would happen to those species? What would happen if the moon ceased to follow its orbit around the earth, and the earth its orbit around the sun? What consequences would unfold? Clearly, it would endanger the existence of those species; it would endanger life on earth. The \u201charmony\u201d of creation would be broken.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, what would happen if <i>man <\/i>and <i>woman <\/i>ceased to follow the natural laws which are written into their very own bodies? What would happen if they purposely interfered with these functions? The consequences would be the same: a break in <i>harmony<\/i> that brings disorder, negates life, and even produces death.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MORE THAN A CREATURE<\/p>\n<p>To this point, I have only addressed man and woman as essentially another species. But we know that man and woman are more than a mere \u201canimal\u201d, more than a &#8220;by-product of evolution&#8221;. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">read Charlie Johnston\u2019s wonderful commentary\u00a0on the fraud of Darwinism: <a href=\"https:\/\/charliej373.wordpress.com\/2015\/05\/28\/reality-is-a-stubborn-thing\/\">\u201cReality is a Stubborn Thing\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Man is not a lost atom in a random universe: he is God\u2019s creature, whom God chose to endow with an immortal soul and whom he has always loved. If man were merely the fruit of either chance or necessity, or if he had to lower his aspirations to the limited horizon of the world in which he lives, if all reality were merely history and culture, and man did not possess a nature destined to transcend itself in a supernatural life, then one could speak of growth, or evolution, but not development.<\/strong>\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, <em>Caritas in Veritate<\/em>, n.29<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That is to say again that man and woman are made \u201cin the image of God.\u201d Unlike animals, man has been given a <i>soul<\/i> that he did not and cannot create by himself since the soul is the \u201cspiritual principle\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><i>CCC, <\/i>n. 363<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> of man.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>\u2026every spiritual soul is created immediately by God\u2014it is not \u201cproduced\u201d by the parents\u2026<\/b> <\/span>\u2014<i>CCC, <\/i>n. 365<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Our soul is what sets us apart from all creation: that is, we are also<i> spiritual beings<\/i>. According to the Catechism, \u2018The unity of the soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right alignright\" style=\"margin-right: 2px; margin-left: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Venice-da-Vinci_02.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"197\" data-position=\"3\" \/>\u201cform\u201d of the body\u2026their union forms a\u00a0single nature.\u2019 <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><i>CCC, <\/i>n. 365<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The reason we are created as such is pure gift: God created us in His image for himself in order that we could share in His love. Why? Because if we are created \u201cin the image of God\u201d, and our soul and body form a <i>single<\/i> nature, then our bodies are part of the reflection of the \u201cimage of God.\u201d This \u201ctheology\u201d is just as important as the \u201cnatural law\u201d explained above, and in fact flows from it. For while the natural law informs the purely biological function of our human sexuality and to some extent our relationship to one another (i.e. a male organ is designed for a female organ and therefore the basis of a relationship between the two sexes), the theology of our bodies explains their spiritual significance (and therefore the nature of the relationship between the two sexes). Thus , the theology and natural law that governs our bodies are likewise \u201cone.\u201d When we understand this, then we can begin to categorize sexual activities into moral categories of what is right, and what is wrong. This is essential because to go against the natural law is to break a harmony within ourselves and with God that can leave no other consequence than the loss of inner peace, which in turn leads to a break in harmony with one another. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/will-you-leave-them-for-dead\/\"><i>Will You Leave Them for Dead?<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE THEOLOGY OF THE BODY<\/p>\n<p>Turning again to Genesis, note that it says of <i>both<\/i> male and female:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Gen 1:27)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That is, together, \u201cmale\u201d and \u201cfemale\u201d reflect the image of God.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"left alignleft\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/handsholding_Fotor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"275\" data-position=\"3\" \/>Although man and woman are part of creation, we are set apart because man and woman, together, form His <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>very image. Not only man as such, not only woman as <\/b><b>such, but rather man and woman, as a couple, are the image of God. The difference between them is not a question of contrast or subordination, but instead of communion and generation, always in the image and semblance of God.<\/b> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, Rome, April 15th, 2015; LifeSiteNews.com<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore, \u2018the respective \u201cperfections\u201d of man and woman reflect something of the infinite perfection of God\u2026 not that God left them half-made and incomplete: he created them to be a <i>communion of persons<\/i>\u2026 equal as persons&#8230; and complementary as masculine and feminine.\u2019 <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><i>CCC, <\/i>n. 370, 372<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> It is in this complementary that we discover the theology within our sexual natures.<\/p>\n<p>If we are made \u201cin the image of God\u201d, then that means that we are made in the image of the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But how can this translate to only <i>two<\/i> persons\u2014male and female? The answer lies in the revelation that <i>God is love<\/i>. As Karol Wojtyla (John Paul II) wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>God is love in the interior life itself of the one divinity. This love is revealed as an ineffable communion of Persons.<\/b> \u2014<i>Valutazioni su Max Scheler <\/i>in <i>Metafisica della persona, <\/i>p. 391-392; quoted in <i>Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla<\/i> by Ailbe M. O\u2019Reilly, p. 86<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Love, as the divine essence, is expressed as such:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>The Father who begets loves the Son who is begotten, and the Son loves the Father with a love which is identical with that of the Father\u2026 But their mutual Gratification, their reciprocal Love, proceeds in them and from them <i>as a person<\/i>: The Father and the Son \u201cspirate\u201d the Spirit of Love consubstantial with them.<\/b> \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II, cited in <i>Conjugal Chastity in Pope Wojtyla<\/i> by Ailbe M. O\u2019Reilly, p. 86<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>From the Love of the Father and Son a third Person proceeds, the Holy Spirit. <i>Thus, man and woman, made in the image of God, <\/i><i>also reflect this divine essence through both body and soul<\/i> (since they constitute one nature): a man and woman so completely love one another, body and soul, that from this <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right alignright\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Trinity_Fotor.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"222\" data-position=\"3\" \/>reciprocal love proceeds a third person: <i>a child<\/i>. Furthermore, Our sexuality, expressed in <i>marriage<\/i>\u2014which is the reflection of the oneness and unity of God\u2014is a pattern of the Trinity\u2019s interior life.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, so profound is this union between man and woman that Scripture says, <i>&#8220;the two of them become one flesh.\u201d<\/i> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[8]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Gen 2:24<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_8').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_8', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Through sex, their bodies truly become \u201cone\u201d, as it were; and this unity extends to the soul. As St. Paul writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;do you not know that anyone who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For \u201cthe two,\u201d it says, \u201cwill become one flesh.\u201d (1 Cor 6:16)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, we have the basis for <i>monogamy: <\/i>marital union with a single other. This union is what is called \u201cmarriage\u201d. It\u2019s exclusivity is founded on the fact that the <i>two become one. <\/i>To break that \u201ccovenant\u201d then <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-19484\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/the-2-shall-become-one.png\" alt=\"the-2-shall-become-one\" width=\"236\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/the-2-shall-become-one.png 320w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/the-2-shall-become-one-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/>is to break the bond that occurs between a man and a woman that runs deeper than skin and bones\u2014it goes to the very heart and soul. No book of theology or canon law is necessary for a man or woman to understand the depth of betrayal that occurs when that bond is broken. For it\u2019s a law that, when broken, breaks the heart.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the creation of other persons within this marital bond generates a new society called the \u201cfamily.\u201d And thus is formed a unique and irreplaceable cell in the continuity of the human race.<\/p>\n<p>The definition of marriage, then, proceeds from both the natural law and theology of the body. Marriage pre-dates the State, is not defined by the State, <i>nor can it be<\/i>, since it proceeds from an order established by God Himself from \u201cthe beginning.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_9');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19472_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19472_1_9');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19472_1_9\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[9]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19472_1_9\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. only one task in this regard: to reject any redefinition of that which cannot be redefined.<\/p>\n<p><i>In the next part, we continue our thought by reflecting on the need for morality or a
