{"id":19533,"date":"2018-05-24T00:00:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-24T06:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/?p=19533"},"modified":"2018-05-25T11:08:50","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T17:08:50","slug":"human-sexuality-and-freedom-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/human-sexuality-and-freedom-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Human Sexuality and Freedom &#8211; Part II","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin: 5px auto;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/right-way-wrong-way_Fotor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"392\" data-position=\"3\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">ON GOODNESS AND CHOICES<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>THERE<\/b> is something else that must be said about the creation of man and woman that was determined \u201cin the beginning.\u201d And if we don\u2019t understand this, if we don\u2019t grasp this, then any discussion of morality, of right or wrong choices, of following God\u2019s designs, risks casting the discussion of human sexuality into a sterile list of prohibitions. And this, I am certain, would only serve to deepen the divide between the Church\u2019s beautiful and rich teachings on sexuality, and those who feel alienated by her.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The truth is that not only are we all created in God\u2019s image, but also:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">God looked at everything he had made, and found it very good. (Gen 1:31)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>WE\u00a0ARE GOOD, BUT FALLEN<\/p>\n<p>We are made in God\u2019s image, and therefore, made in the image of He who is Goodness itself. As the Psalmist wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother\u2019s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:13-14)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/reflection_Fotor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"243\" data-position=\"3\" \/>The Blessed Virgin Mary was looking at the perfect\u00a0reflection of herself when she held Christ in her arms because her whole life was in perfect harmony with her Creator. God wills this harmony for us too.<\/p>\n<p>Now we all, to varying degrees, have the capacity to do what every other creature in creation does: eat, sleep, hunt, gather, etc. But because we are made in God\u2019s image, <i>we also have the capacity to love<\/i>. And thus, it should be no surprise to find a couple who are living out of wedlock who are also good parents. Or two co-habiting homosexuals who are very generous. Or a husband addicted to pornography who is an honest worker. Or an atheist who is a selfless servant in an orphanage, etc. Evolutionists have often\u00a0failed to account, beyond speculation and the limited\u00a0field of science, for why we desire to be good, or even what love is. The Church\u2019s answer\u00a0is that we are created in the image of Him who is both Good and Love itself, and thus, <i>there is a natural law within us guiding us toward these ends<\/i>. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/human-sexuality-and-freedom-part-i\/\"><i>Human Sexuality and Freedom-<\/i>Part I<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Just as gravity keeps the earth in orbit around the sun, it is this very goodness\u2014the \u201cgravity\u201d of love\u2014that keeps mankind in harmony with God and all creation.<\/p>\n<p>However, that harmony with God, one another, and all creation was broken with the fall of Adam and Eve. And thus we see another principle at work: the ability to do wrong, to be driven toward serving selfish ends. It is precisely into this interior battle between the desire to do good and the urge to do evil that Jesus entered to \u201csave us.\u201d And\u00a0that which liberates us is <i>truth. <\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Without truth, charity degenerates <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/AnEmptyClamShell_Fotor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"256\" data-position=\"3\" \/>into sentimentality. Love becomes an empty shell, to be filled in an arbitrary way. In a culture without truth, this is the fatal risk facing love. It falls prey to contingent subjective emotions and opinions, the word \u201clove\u201d is abused and distorted, to the point where it comes to mean the opposite.<\/b> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20090629_caritas-in-veritate.html\">Caritas in Veritate<\/a>, <\/i>n. 3<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pornography is the icon of a &#8220;civilization of love&#8221; without truth. It is the desire to love, to be loved, and have relationship\u2014but without the truth of our sexuality and its intrinsic meaning. So too, other sexual forms of expression, while seeking to be \u201cgood\u201d, can also be a distortion of truth. What we are called to do is bring that which is in \u201cdisorder\u201d into \u201corder.\u201d And Our Lord\u2019s mercy and grace are there to help us.<\/p>\n<p>This is to say that we must acknowledge and foster the good in others. But we also cannot let the good we see turn compassion into &#8220;sentimentality&#8221; where that which is immoral is simply swept under the carpet.\u00a0The mission of the Lord is also\u00a0that of the Church: to participate\u00a0in\u00a0the salvation of others. This cannot be accomplished in self-deception but only in\u00a0<em>truth.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>REDISCOVERING MORAL ABSOLUTES<\/p>\n<p>And that is where <i>morality <\/i>enters in. Morals, that is, laws or rules, help to enlighten our conscience and guide our actions according to the common good. Yet, why is there the notion in our times that our sexuality is a \u201cfree for all\u201d that should be completely unmoored from any kind of morality?<\/p>\n<p>Just like all of our other bodily functions, are there laws that govern our sexuality and order it toward health and happiness? For example, we know if we drink too much water, hyponatremia can set in and even kill you. If you eat too much, obesity can kill you. If you even breathe too fast, hyperventilation can cause you <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"left alignleft\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/overeat2_Fotor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"190\" data-position=\"3\" \/>to collapse. So you see, we have to govern even our intake of such goods as water, food, and air. Why do we think, then, that the improper governance of our sexual appetite does not also bear serious consequences? The facts tell a different story. Sexually transmitted diseases have become epidemic, divorce rates are soaring, pornography is destroying marriages, and human trafficking has exploded in nearly every part of the world. Could it be that our sexuality also has boundaries that keep it in balance with our spiritual, emotional, and physical health? Moreover, what and who determines those boundaries?<\/p>\n<p>Morals exist to guide human behavior toward one\u2019s own good and the common good. But they are not arbitrarily derived, as we discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/human-sexuality-and-freedom-part-i\/\">Part I<\/a>. They flow from the natural law which \u201cexpresses the dignity of the person and determines the basis for his fundamental rights and duties.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>, n. 1956<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>But the grave danger in our time is the separation of ethics and morals from the natural law. This danger is further obscured when \u201crights\u201d are secured <i>solely<\/i> by \u201cpopular vote.\u201d History bears the fact that even<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/slavery_Fotor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"260\" data-position=\"3\" \/> the majority of populations can begin to embrace as \u201cmoral\u201d something which is contrary to \u201cgoodness.\u201d Look no further than the past century. Slavery was justified; so was restricting women\u2019s right to vote; and of course, Nazism was democratically implemented by the people. This is all to say that there is nothing so fickle as majority opinion.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>This is the sinister result of a relativism which reigns unopposed: the \u201cright\u201d ceases to be such, because it is no longer firmly founded on the inviolable dignity of the person, but is made subject to the will of the stronger part. In this way democracy, contradicting its own principles, effectively moves towards a form of totalitarianism.<\/b> \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II, <i>Evangelium Vitae, \u201cThe Gospel of Life\u201d<\/i>, n. 18, 20<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>These are strange times when a self-proclaimed \u201cgay atheist\u201d is questioning the Catholic Church in Ireland, not for her teachings, but for \u2018the philosophical mess that religious conservatives are making of their case.\u2019 He goes on to question:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Can\u2019t these Christians see that the moral basis of their faith cannot be sought in the pollsters\u2019 arithmetic? &#8230;can a preponderance of public opinion reverse the polarity between virtue and vice? Would it have occurred for a moment to Moses (let alone God) that he\u2019d better defer to Moloch-worship because that\u2019s what most of the Israelites wanted to do? It must surely be implicit in the claim of any of the world\u2019s great religions that on questions of morality, a majority may be wrong\u2026<\/b> \u2014Matthew Parris, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/columnists\/matthew-parris\/9539572\/in-irish-catholicism-it-seems-god-can-be-outvoted\/\">The Spectator<\/a>, <\/i>May 30th, 2015<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Parris is absolutely right. The fact that the moral foundations of modern society are shifting with\u00a0barely a fight is because truth and reason have been eclipsed by weak Church-men who have compromised truth out of fear or self-gain.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>&#8230;we need knowledge, we need truth, because without these we cannot stand firm, we cannot move forward. Faith without truth does not save, it does not provide a sure footing. It remains a beautiful story, the projection of our deep yearning for happiness, something capable <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/broken-mirror_Fotor1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"224\" data-position=\"3\" \/>of satisfying us to the extent that we are willing to deceive ourselves.<\/b> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20130629_enciclica-lumen-fidei.html\">Lumen Fidei<\/a>, <\/i>Encyclical Letter, n. 24<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This series on Human Sexuality and Freedom is intended to challenge all of us to ask if we are, in fact, deceiving ourselves, if we have convinced ourselves that the \u201cfreedom\u201d we are expressing through our sexuality in the media, in music, in the way we dress, in our conversations, and in our bedrooms, is rather <i>enslaving<\/i> both ourselves and others? The only way to answer this question is to \u201cawaken\u201d the truth of who we are and rediscover the foundations of morality. As Pope Benedict warned:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Only if there is such a consensus on the essentials can constitutions and law function. This fundamental consensus derived from the Christian heritage is at risk\u2026 In reality, this makes reason blind to what is essential. To resist this eclipse of reason and to preserve its capacity for seeing the essential, for seeing God and man, for seeing what is good and what is true, is the common interest that must unite all people of good will. The very future of the world is at stake.<\/b> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Address to the Roman Curia, December 20th, 2010<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes! We have to awaken the truth about our goodness. Christians have to go beyond debate and\u00a0out into the world alongside the lost, bleeding, and even those who reject us, <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/1_self-examination_Fotor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"333\" data-position=\"3\" \/>and <i>let them see us contemplating their goodness. <\/i>In this way, through love, we may find a common ground for the seeds of truth. We may find the possibility to awaken in others the \u201cmemory\u201d of who we are: sons and daughters made in the image of God. For as Pope Francis said, we are suffering from \u201ca massive amnesia in our contemporary world\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>The question of truth is really a question of memory, <\/b><b>deep memory, for it deals with something prior to ourselves and can succeed in uniting us in a way that transcends our petty and limited individual consciousness. It is a question about the origin of all that is, in whose light we can glimpse the goal and thus the meaning of our common path.<\/b> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20130629_enciclica-lumen-fidei.html\"><i>Lumen Fidei<\/i><\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Encyclical Letter, 25<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HUMAN REASON AND MORALITY<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe<b>\u00a0<\/b>must obey God rather than men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was Peter and the Apostles&#8217; response to the leaders of their people when they were ordered to stop their teachings. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. For the natural law we discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/human-sexuality-and-freedom-part-i\/\">Part I<\/a> is not an invention of man nor the Church. It is, again, &#8220;nothing other than the light of understanding placed in us by God.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <i>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/i>n. 1955<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> <b> <\/b>Of course, some might retort that they don\u2019t believe in God and therefore are not bound by the natural law. However, the \u201cmoral code\u201d written into creation itself transcends all religions and can be perceived by human reason alone.<\/p>\n<p>Take for example an infant boy. He has no idea why he has that \u201cthing\u201d down there. It makes no sense to him whatsoever. However, when he reaches the age of reason, he learns that that \u201cthing\u201d <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 5px 2px 5px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/confused-baby_Fotor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"196\" data-position=\"3\" \/>continues to make no sense <i>apart from the female genitalia<\/i>. So too, a young woman can also reason that her sexuality makes no sense apart from the male sex. They are a <i>complementary<\/i>. This can be understood by human reason alone. I mean, if a one year old can teach himself to put a round toy peg in a round hole, the idea that sexually\u00a0explicit education in classrooms is \u201cessential\u201d becomes a bit of a farce, exposing an agenda of another kind&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>That said, our human reason has become darkened by sin. And thus the truths of our human sexuality are often obscured.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">The precepts of natural law are not perceived by everyone clearly and immediately. In the present situation sinful man needs grace and revelation so moral and religious truths may be known &#8220;by everyone with facility, with firm certainty and with no admixture of error.\u201d<\/span> <\/b><\/span>\u2014<i>Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC),<\/i><i>\u00a0<\/i>n. 1960<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That is the role, in part, of the Church. Christ entrusted her with the mission to \u201cteach everything\u201d that Our Lord taught. This includes not only the Gospel of faith, but the moral Gospel as well. For if Jesus said that the truth will set us free, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. John 8:32<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> it would seem imperative that we would know precisely what those truths are that liberate us, and those which enslave. Thus the Church was commissioned to teach both \u201cfaith and morals.\u201d She does so infallibly through the Holy Spirit, who is \u201cthe Church\u2019s living memory\u201d, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_19533_1('footnote_plugin_reference_19533_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <i>CCC, <\/i>n. 1099<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_19533_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_19533_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> by virtue of Christ\u2019s promise:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">&#8230;when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. (John 16:13)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Again, why am I pointing this out in a discussion on human sexuality? Because what good is it to discuss what is in fact morally \u201cright\u201d or \u201cwrong\u201d f rom the Church\u2019s perspective unless we understand <i>what the point of reference of the Church is? <\/i>As Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco stated:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>When the culture can no longer apprehend those natural truths, then the very foundation of our teaching evaporates and nothing we have to offer will make sense.<\/b> \u2014<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cruxnow.com\/life\/2015\/06\/03\/sf-archbishop-gender-transitions-are-a-threat-to-faith\/\">Cruxnow.com<\/a>, <\/i>June 3rd, 2015<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE VOICE OF THE CHURCH TODAY<\/p>\n<p>The point of reference of the Church is the natural law <i>and <\/i>the revelation of God through Jesus Christ. It also provides the indispensable moral foundation for building the human community. Finally, it provides the necessary basis for the civil law with which it is connected, whether by a reflection that draws conclusions from its principles, or by additions of a positive and juridical nature.<\/b><\/span> \u2014<i>CCC, <\/i>n. 1959<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Church\u2019s role then is not in competition with the State. Rather, it is to provide an infallible moral guiding-light for the State in its function to provide for, organize, and govern the common good of society.
