In fact, we are not even facing the last tribulations of the Church. What we are facing is the <i>final confrontation<\/i> in a long history of confrontations between Satan and Christ\u2019s Church: a battle for one or the other to establish <i>their kingdom <\/i>on earth.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/clash-of-the-kingdoms\/\"><em>Clash of the Kingdoms<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0St. John Paul II summed it up this way:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b><i>We are now standing in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone through.<\/i> I do not think that wide circles of the American society or wide circles of the Christian community realize this fully. <i>We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel versus the anti-Gospel.<\/i> This confrontation lies within the plans of divine Providence; it is a trial which the whole Church, and the Polish Church in particular, must take up. Our Lady of Fatima has said that Russia\u2019s errors would spread all over the world. It was first done under a violent form, classical Marxism, by killing tens of millions. Now it\u2019s being done mostly by cultural Marxism. There is continuity from Lenin\u2019s sex revolution, through Gramsci and the Frankfurt school, to the current-day gay-rights and gender ideology. Classical Marxism pretended to redesign society, through violent take-over of property. Now the revolution goes deeper; it pretends to redefine family, sex identity and human nature. This ideology calls itself progressive. According to St. John, this <i>&#8220;<\/i>final confrontation\u201d<i> <\/i>begins to conclude, first with a seemingly brief victory for Satan, who concentrates his power into a \u201cbeast\u201d:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Fascinated, the whole world followed after the beast.<\/strong> (Rev 13:9)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I say \u201cseemingly,\u201d because a snail is no match for a Savior. The Beast, whom the Church Fathers assign as the \u201cAntichrist\u201d or \u201clawless one\u201d, will be destroyed by a manifestation of Our Lord who comes to bring about the decisive end to this particular satanic confrontation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>The most authoritative view, and the one that appears to be most in harmony with Holy Scripture, is that, after the fall of the Antichrist, the Catholic Church will once again enter upon a period of prosperity and triumph.<\/b> \u2014<i>The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life<\/i>, Fr. Charles Arminjon (1824-1885), p. 56-57; Sophia Institute Press<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Following the Passion<\/h5>\n<p>That is, the Church will follow in the footsteps of Jesus: she will go through her own Passion, followed by a <i>resurrection,<\/i><span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-coming-resurrection\/\"><em>The Coming Resurrection<\/em><\/a> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-resurrection-of-the-church\/\">The Resurrection of the Church<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> in which the Kingdom of God will be established to the ends of the earth\u2014not the definitive Kingdom of \u201cHeaven\u201d, but a temporal, spiritual kingdom, a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-coming-sabbath-rest\/\">day of rest<\/a>\u201d for the Church of Christ on earth. This, my dear brothers and sisters, has been taught from the very beginnings of the early Church: <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/how-the-era-was-lost\/\">How the Era was Lost<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/millenarianism-what-it-is-and-is-not\/\">Millenarianism\u2014What it is and is Not<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>But when The Antichrist shall have devastated all things in this world, he will reign for three years and six months, and sit in the temple at Jerusalem; and then the Lord will come from Heaven in the clouds\u2026 sending this man and those who follow him into the lake of fire; but bringing in for the righteous the times of the kingdom, that is, the rest, the hallowed seventh day\u2026 These are to take place in the times of the kingdom, that is, upon the seventh day\u2026 the true Sabbath of the righteous.<\/b> \u2014St. Irenaeus of Lyons, Church Father (140\u2013202 A.D.); <i>Adversus Haereses<\/i>, Irenaeus of Lyons, V.33.3.4, The Fathers of the Church, CIMA Publishing Co.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>We do confess that a kingdom is promised to us upon the earth, although before heaven, only in another state of existence\u2026<\/b> \u2014Tertullian (155\u2013240 A.D.), Nicene Church Father; <i>Adversus Marcion<\/i>, Ante-Nicene Fathers, Henrickson Publishers, 1995, Vol. 3, pp. 342-343)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is also what Jesus taught the Apostles:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">(Mark 10:39)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Glory of the Kingdom<\/h5>\n<p>This \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-coming-sabbath-rest\/\">day of rest<\/a>\u201d or \u201crefreshing\u201d prophesied by the Old Testament prophets, that follows the \u201cPassover\u201d of the Church, is affirmed in both Scripture and Sacred Tradition:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; color: #003366;\"><b>St. Peter says to the Jews of Jerusalem after Pentecost: &#8220;Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the pre sence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for establishing all that God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old&#8221;\u2026 Before Christ\u2019s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers\u2026 The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection.<\/b><\/span> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>, n.674, 672, 677<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24102 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Crossresurrection-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Crossresurrection-1.jpg 539w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Crossresurrection-1-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/>The <i>\u201cglory&#8221;<\/i> of the kingdom will begin<i> <\/i>when the words of the <i>Our Father<\/i> are fulfilled: \u201cthy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>For the mysteries of Jesus are not yet completely perfected and fulfilled. They are complete, indeed, in the person of Jesus, but not in us, who are his members, nor in the Church, which is his mystical body.<\/b> \u2014St. John Eudes, treatise &#8220;On the Kingdom of Jesus&#8221;, <i>Liturgy of the Hours<\/i>, Vol IV, p 559<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After the Beast is destroyed, St. John foresaw this fulfillment of the Divine Will in the saints, this glorious reign of the Kingdom in the Church, as concomitant with a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-resurrection-of-the-church\/\">first resurrection<\/a>\u201d \u2014 those \u201cfor whom it has been prepared\u201d (Mark 10:40):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>I also saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, and who had not worshiped the beast or its image nor had accepted its mark on their foreheads or hands. They came to life and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years.<\/strong> (Rev 20:4)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Middle Coming<\/h5>\n<p>Thus, the \u201cfinal confrontation\u201d of this era does not climax with the end of the world, but the establishment of the Kingdom of God <i>within <\/i>those who persevere to the end. It is as if the <i>dawning of Christ\u2019s return <\/i>begins in the saints, the same way that light breaks the horizon before the sun rises. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-rising-morning-star\/\">The Rising Morning Star<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> As St. Bernard taught:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>We know that there are three comings of the Lord\u2026 In the final coming, all flesh will see the salvation of our God, and they will look on him whom they pierced. The intermediate coming is a hidden one; in it only the elect see the Lord within their own selves, and they are saved.<\/b> \u2014<i>Liturgy of the Hours<\/i>, Vol I, p. 169; cf.\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-middle-coming\/\">The Middle Coming<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What happens <i>after<\/i> the final confrontation of this age and the ensuing \u201cera of peace\u201d, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_21170_1('footnote_plugin_reference_21170_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/how-the-era-was-lost\/\">How the Era was Lost<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/millenarianism-what-it-is-and-is-not\/\">Millenarianism\u2014What it is and is Not<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_21170_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_21170_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0is clear in Scripture:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison. He will go out to deceive the nations at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. They invaded the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the holy ones and the beloved city. But fire came down from heaven and consumed them.<\/strong> (Rev 20:7-9)<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><span class=\"text\" style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">The kingdom will be fulfilled, then, not by a historic triumph of the Church through a\u00a0<em>progressive ascendancy<\/em>, but only by God\u2019s victory over the final unleashing of evil, which will cause his Bride to come down from heaven. God\u2019s triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgment after the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span class=\"text\"><em>\u2014Catechism of the Catholic Church 677<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Therefore, brothers and sisters, what should we do as we enter now into some of the darkest hours of this present \u201cfinal confrontation\u201d? As I have written before, let us prepare instead for Christ, not the Antichrist; let us prepare with Our Lady for this coming of Jesus in His glorified Spirit, as in a <i>new Pentecost; <\/i>let us prepare to live in His Divine Will by emptying ourselves now of our own will; let us become totally possessed by God so that we may possess Him, now, and in the era to come.
