THE <\/b>Mass readings this week that address the signs of the \u201cend times\u201d will no doubt evoke the familiar, if not easy dismissal that \u201ceveryone thinks their<\/i> times are the end times.\u201d Right? We\u2019ve all heard that repeated again and again. That was certainly true of the early Church, until Sts. Peter and Paul began to temper expectations:<\/p>\n

Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard \u201cdelay,\u201d but he is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:8)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And it is certainly true that, in the past century or two with the industrial and technological revolutions, and the growing separation of Church and State, that many commentators\u2014not the least, popes[1]<\/sup><\/a>cf. Why Aren’t the Popes Shouting?<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span>
