{"id":23345,"date":"2016-03-06T23:33:03","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T05:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/?p=23345"},"modified":"2017-04-27T19:33:13","modified_gmt":"2017-04-27T23:33:13","slug":"mastery-of-self","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/mastery-of-self\/","title":{"rendered":"Mastery of Self","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"CENTER\">LENTEN RETREAT<br \/>\n Day 23<\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/self-mastery_Fotor.jpg\" alt=\"self-mastery_Fotor\" width=\"471\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/self-mastery_Fotor.jpg 471w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/self-mastery_Fotor-300x262.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\" data-select-like-a-boss=\"1\"><strong data-select-like-a-boss=\"1\">LAST <\/strong>time,<strong data-select-like-a-boss=\"1\">\u00a0<\/strong>I spoke about remaining steadfast on the Narrow Pilgrim Road, &#8220;rejecting temptation to your right, and illusion to your left.&#8221; But before I speak further about the important subject of temptation, I think it will be helpful to know more of the <em>nature <\/em>of a\u00a0Christian\u2014of\u00a0what happens to you and me\u00a0in Baptism\u2014and what doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">When we are baptized, St. Paul teaches that we become a &#8220;new creation&#8221; in Christ: <em>&#8220;the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come.&#8221; <\/em><span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_23345_1('footnote_plugin_reference_23345_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_23345_1('footnote_plugin_reference_23345_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_23345_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_23345_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">2 Cor 5:17<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_23345_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_23345_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0God, in essence, breathes His Spirit into us such that His Spirit becomes one with ours, making our spirit, our <em>heart<\/em> new. There is a true death and restoration of the human <em>spirit<\/em>\u00a0that happens<em>,<\/em>\u00a0such that St. Paul says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Col 3:3)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">St. John of Avila perfectly captures this &#8220;resurrection&#8221; of the spiritually dead through Baptism:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Christ has a living spirit, a life-giving spirit which raises up those of us who desire to live. Let us go to Christ, let us seek Christ, who has the breath of life. No matter how evil you be, how lost, how disorientated, if you go to him, if you seek him, he will make you well, he will win you over and set you right and heal you.<\/strong> \u2014St. John of Avila, <em>Sermon on Pentecost Sunday, <\/em>from <em>The Navarre Bible, &#8220;Corinthians&#8221;<\/em>, p. 152<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">St. Athanasius also said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&#8230;the Son of God became man so that we might become God.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>, n. 460<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The key words here are <em>so that <\/em>we might become like Him. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_23345_1('footnote_plugin_reference_23345_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_23345_1('footnote_plugin_reference_23345_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_23345_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_23345_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">To be understood in the sense that our\u00a0souls are immortal and sharing\u00a0in the attributes of the divine\u00a0nature,\u00a0but not assuming an equality with God, who is infinitely greater and from whom all life proceeds. As such,\u00a0worship and adoration belong only to the Holy Trinity.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_23345_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_23345_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Baptism makes it possible for us to become like Christ, but it&#8217;s only our <em>co-operation with grace<\/em> that will bring this work to completion, for we are, in part, still subject to a fallen nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">For one, we continue to experience the effects of sin, such as sickness, suffering, and death. Why? Through Baptism, our &#8220;heart&#8221; or spirit\u00a0becomes a\u00a0partaker\u00a0in the <em data-select-like-a-boss=\"1\">divine nature<\/em>; but the <em>human nature<\/em> of the person: their <em>reason<\/em>, <em>intellect<\/em>, and <em>will<\/em> have inherited the &#8220;wound&#8221; of original sin, which is an inclination to evil\u00a0called <em>concupiscence<\/em>. And so,\u00a0our\u00a0bodies continue\u00a0to be subject to the passions of the flesh. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_23345_1('footnote_plugin_reference_23345_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_23345_1('footnote_plugin_reference_23345_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_23345_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_23345_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Rev 20:11-15<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_23345_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_23345_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: small;\">Baptism, by imparting the life of Christ&#8217;s grace, erases original sin and turns a man back towards God, but the consequences for nature, weakened and inclined to evil, persist in man and summon him to spiritual battle. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<em>CCC, <\/em>n. 405<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">The spiritual battle, then, is one of <em>conversion: <\/em>bringing the body, mind, and will into conformity with the renewed\u00a0<em>spirit. <\/em>It is wrestling to bring\u00a0our fallen <em>human nature<\/em> into unity with the new and <em>divine nature<\/em> imparted to us in Baptism. And so, St. Paul writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">We hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us&#8230; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body.\u00a0(2 Cor 4:7-10)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This life of Jesus is manifested in us in this way: by bringing to death <em>everything<\/em> that is contrary to <em>love<\/em>. When God set Adam and Eve as stewards over all creation, that stewardship extended also to themselves:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000066; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">The &#8220;mastery&#8221; over the world that God offered man from the beginning was realized above all within man himself:\u00a0<em>mastery of self<\/em>.<\/span><\/strong> \u2014<em>CCC, <\/em>n. 377<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\" data-select-like-a-boss=\"1\">So, brothers and sisters, the Christian journey down the &#8220;Narrow Pilgrim Road&#8221; is one of essentially recovering, through grace, this <em>mastery of self<\/em> through an interior life of prayer so that we become, in all facets of our being, the image of God, who is <em>love<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But constantly working against us is temptation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">SUMMARY AND SCRIPTURE<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong data-select-like-a-boss=\"1\">Baptism makes us sharers in the divine nature, but the work\u00a0of bringing our body, mind and will into communion with it, continues. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, mono; font-size: small;\">&#8230;he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature.
