The two major sects of Islam are the Sunnis and the Shiites. The division between them goes back 1400 years to a dispute over who should succeed the Prophet Mohammad. Then there is Abu Sayyef in the Philippines, Lashkar e Taiba in Kashmir, and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Hezbollah out of Lebanon is the military arm of some Shiites. All of these organizations are responsible to one degree or another for the displacement of millions of people fleeing the brutal enforcement of Islamic doctrine known as Sharia law (note: the fight between Islamic sects often comes down to the view that the other party is an “apostate” for his or her erroneous interpretation or application of Islamic teaching).

II. Western Intervention

Here, the situation becomes even more complex. It is a known fact that foreign countries, most especially the United States, have supplied weapons, resources, and training to some of the aforementioned terrorist groups in order to shift power in the Middle East to their own “national interests.” Why? It might be overly simplifying things to say “oil”, but that’s a large part it.
