No, God knows well that the moment you eat of [the fruit of the tree of knowledge] your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is evil. (Sunday\u2019s first reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Satan lured Adam and Eve with the sophistry that there was no law greater than themselves. That their <i>conscience <\/i>was the law; that \u201cgood and evil\u201d was relative, and thus &#8220;pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom.\u201d But as I explained last time, this lie has become an<i>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/16\/the-anti-mercy\/\">Anti-Mercy <\/a><\/i>in our times that once again seeks to console the sinner by stroking his ego rather than healing him with the balm of mercy\u2026 <i>authentic <\/i>mercy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>WHY THE CONFUSION?<\/p>\n<p>As I recounted here four years ago, shortly after the resignation of Pope Benedict, I sensed in prayer these words for several weeks: <i>\u201cYou are entering into dangerous and confusing times.\u201d<\/i> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/how-do-you-hide-a-tree\/\">How Do You Hide a Tree?<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> It is becoming clearer by the day as to why. Sadly, the apparent ambiguity of the papal exhortation <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20160319_amoris-laetitia.html\"><i>Amoris Laetitia <\/i><\/a>is being used by some clergy as an opportunity to propose a kind of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-anti-mercy\/\">anti-mercy<\/a>&#8221; while other bishops are using it as an additional guideline to what is already taught in Sacred Tradition. At stake is not only the Sacrament of Marriage, but &#8220;the morality of society as a whole.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">POPE JOHN PAUL II, <i>Veritatis Splendor<\/i>, n. 104; <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_06081993_veritatis-splendor.html\">vatican.va<\/a>; see <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-anti-mercy\/\">The Anti-Mercy<\/a> <\/i>for an explanation on the gravity of this debate.<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>While noting that &#8216;the language could have been clearer,&#8217; Fr. Matthew Schneider explains how <i>Amoris Laetitia <\/i>can and must be &#8216;read as a whole and within tradition,&#8217; and as such, there is essentially no change in doctrine (see <i><a href=\"https:\/\/cruxnow.com\/commentary\/2017\/02\/06\/weve-wrong-amoris-along\/\">here<\/a><\/i>). American canon lawyer Edward Peters agrees, but also notes that &#8220;because of the ambiguity and incompleteness&#8221; with which it discusses certain real world doctrinal\/pastoral decisions, <i>Amoris Laetitia<\/i> can be interpreted by &#8220;diametrically opposed schools of sacramental practice,&#8221; and thus, the confusion \u201cmust be addressed\u201d (see <i><a href=\"https:\/\/canonlawblog.wordpress.com\/2017\/02\/23\/i-am-a-lawyer-not-a-mind-reader\/\">here<\/a><\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Hence, four cardinals took the step of asking Pope Francis, privately and now publicly, five questions called <i>dubia <\/i>(Latin for \u201cdoubts\u201d) in order to put an end to the &#8216;tremendous division&#8217; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Cardinal Raymond Burke, one of the signers of the <i>dubia; <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/cardinal-burke-on-amoris-laetitia-dubia-tremendous-division-warrants-action\">ncregister.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> that is spreading. However, during the closing remarks of the controversial Synod on the family in October of 2014, Francis reminded the gathering of prelates that, as the successor of Peter, he is&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>&#8230;the guarantor of the obedience and the conformity of the Church to the will of God, to the Gospel of Christ, and to the Tradition of the Church\u2026.<\/b> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, closing remarks on the Synod; <i>Catholic News Agency<\/i>, October 18th, 2014<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, as I have repeatedly said for three years, our faith is not in man but in Jesus Christ, even if Our Lord permits the Church to enter a serious crisis. As Pope Innocent III said,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>The Lord clearly intimates that Peter\u2019s successors will never at any time deviate from the Catholic faith, but will instead recall the others and strengthen the hesitant.<\/b> \u2014<i>Sedis Primatus, <\/i>November 12, 1199; quoted by JOHN PAUL II, General Audience, Dec. 2, 1992;<a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/it\/audiences\/1992\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_aud_19921202.html\"> vatican.va<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lastampa.it\/2017\/02\/07\/vaticaninsider\/eng\/the-vatican\/the-magisterium-of-pope-francis-his-predecessors-come-to-his-defence-x5jzE4YtghvlnRvSvcolGM\/pagina.html\">lastampa.it<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That is,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Popes have made and make mistakes and this is no surprise. Infallibility is reserved <i>ex cathedra<\/i> [\u201cfrom the seat\u201d of Peter, that is, proclamations of dogma based on Sacred Tradition]. No popes in the history of the Church have ever made <i>ex cathedra<\/i> errors.<\/b> \u2014Rev. Joseph Iannuzzi, Theologian, in a personal letter; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-chair-of-rock\/\"><i>The Chair of Rock<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But just as Peter of old once brought confusion down on the Church, even swaying fellow bishops by caving into \u201cpolitical correctness,\u201d it can happen in our time too (see Gal 2:11-14). So we wait, watch, and pray\u2014while not hesitating to exercise our baptismal duty to preach the Gospel as handed onto us through Sacred Tradition&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>DANGER: POLITICAL CORRECTNESS<\/p>\n<p>We should not be misled into thinking that, suddenly, it is now uncertain what <i>authentic mercy <\/i>is. The crisis at hand is not that we no\u00a0longer know the truth, but rather, that heresies can cause\u00a0immense damage and lead many astray. <i>Souls<\/i> are at stake.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">\u2026there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies\u2026 Many will follow their licentious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled. (2 Pet 2:2)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Scriptures are generally not that difficult to understand, and when they are, their proper interpretation has been safeguarded in Apostolic Tradition. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">see <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-unfolding-splendour-of-truth\/\">The Unfolding Splendor of Truth<\/a> <\/i>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-fundamental-problem\/\"><i>The Fundamental Problem<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Even in the present situation, remember that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-papacy-is-not-one-pope\/\">The Papacy is Not One Pope<\/a>\u2014<\/i>it is the voice of Peter throughout the centuries. No, the real danger to us all is that, in the current climate of political correctness, which steamrolls over anyone who proposes moral absolutes, we could become cowards ourselves and deny Christ by our silence (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/political-correctness-and-the-great-apostasy\/\"><i>Political Correctness and the Great Apostasy<\/i><\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>I think modern life, including life in the Church, suffers from a phony unwillingness to offend that poses as prudence and good manners, but too often turns out to be cowardice. Human beings owe each other respect and appropriate courtesy. But we also owe each other the truth\u2014which means candor.<\/strong> \u2014Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Rendering Unto Caesar: The Catholic Political Vocation, February 23rd, 2009, Toronto, Canada<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UNTYING THE KNOT<\/p>\n<p>When John the Baptist was presented in the temple as an infant, his father Zechariah prophesied over him saying&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give his people <em>knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins<\/em>&#8230; (Luke 1:76-77)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is revealed the key that opens the gate to eternal life:<i> the forgiveness of sins<\/i><i>. <\/i>From that moment on, God began to reveal how He would make a \u201cnew covenant\u201d with humanity: <i>through the sacrifice and blood of the Lamb of God, He would take away the sins of the world.<\/i> For the sin of Adam and Eve created an abyss between us and God; but Jesus bridges that abyss through the Cross.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">For he is our peace, he who&#8230; broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh\u2026 through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it. (Eph 2:14-16)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-26633\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/mercyabyss-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"470\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As Jesus said to St. Faustina,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b><i>\u2026between Me and you there is a bottomless abyss, an abyss which separates the Creator from the creature. But this abyss is filled with My mercy.<\/i> <\/b>\u2014Jesus to St. Faustina,<em> Divine Mercy in My Soul,<\/em> Diary, n. 1576<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, the mercy of Jesus that gushed forth from His Heart is for this, and this alone: <i>to take away our sins so that we can pass over the abyss and rejoin the Father in a communion of love.<\/i> However, if we remain in sin by either rejecting baptism, or after baptism, continuing in a life of mortal sin, then we remain at enmity with God\u2014separated still by the abyss.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">&#8230;whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him. (John 3:36)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If mercy fills the abyss,<i> then it is our free response through <\/i>obedience<i> which carries us over it. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>However, the <i>anti-mercy <\/i>emerging at this hour suggests that we can remain on the other side of the abyss\u2014that is, still <i>knowingly remain <\/i>in<i> <\/i>objectively grave sin\u2014and yet still be in communion with God, so long as my conscience \u201cis at peace.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-anti-mercy\/\"><i>The Anti-Mercy<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> That is, it is no longer the Cross but <i>conscience <\/i>which bridges the abyss. To which St. John replies:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. Whoever says, \u201cI know him,\u201d but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (1 John 2:3-4)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>\u2026indeed His\u00a0purpose was not merely to confirm the world in its worldliness and to be its companion, leaving it completely unchanged.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany,\u00a0September 25th, 2011;\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it\/articolo\/1349601?eng=y\">www.chiesa.com<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No, it is all really quite simple, dear brothers and sisters:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">No one born of God commits sin; for God&#8217;s nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:9-10)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MERCY MEETS WEAKNESS<\/p>\n<p>But few of us are \u201cperfect\u201d in love! I know that God\u2019s nature does not abide in me as it should; I am not holy as He is holy; I sin, and am a sinner.<\/p>\n<p>So am I a child of the devil?<\/p>\n<p>The honest answer is <i>maybe. <\/i>For St. John qualified this teaching when he said, <i>&#8220;All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.\u201d<\/i> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[8]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">1 John 5:17<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_8').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_8', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> That is, there is such thing as \u201cvenial\u201d and \u201cmortal\u201d sin\u2014sin which breaks the New Covenant, and sin which only wounds it. Thus, in one of the most hopeful and encouraging passages in the Catechism, we read:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; color: #0b0752;\"><b>&#8230;venial sin does not break the covenant with God. With God&#8217;s grace it is humanly reparable. &#8220;Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness.&#8221;<\/b><\/span> \u2014<i>Catechism of the Catholic <\/i><i>Church, <\/i>n. 1863<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Authentic mercy makes this message known to those who struggle with daily sin. It is \u201cGood News\u201d because \u201clove covers a multitude of sins.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_9');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_9');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_9\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[9]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_9\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. 1 Pet 4:8<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_9').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_9', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> But anti-mercy says, \u201cIf you are &#8216;at peace with God\u2019 about your conduct, then even your mortal sins are rendered venial.\u201d But this is a deception. Anti-mercy absolves the sinner without confession while authentic mercy says <i>all sin <\/i>can be forgiven, but only when we acknowledge them through confession.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">If we say, \u201cWe are without sin,\u201d we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. (1 John 1:8-9)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And thus, the Catechism goes on to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #0b0752;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss<\/span>.<\/b> <\/span>\u2014<i>Catechism of the Catholic <\/i><i>Church, <\/i>n. 1864<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-26649\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/jesuscruci.jpg\" width=\"272\" height=\"282\" \/>Thus, authentic mercy reveals the extent to which Jesus has gone\u2014not to coddle our egos and make us feel a false contentment that our sin is really \u201cnot that bad, given my difficult situation&#8221;\u2014but to take it away, to set us free and heal us of the disfigurement that sin causes. Just look at a crucifix. The Cross is more than a sacrifice\u2014it is a mirror to reflect to us the nature of what sin does to the soul and to our relationships. But authentic mercy says we cannot remain in <i>any <\/i>sin\u2014but if we fail, God will never reject us, even if we have to repent \u201cseventy-seven times.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_10');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_10');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_10\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[10]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_10\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. (Romans 12:2)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE NARROW ROAD<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it is too hard!\u2026 You don\u2019t understand my situation!\u2026 You don\u2019t know what it\u2019s like to walk in my shoes!\u201d Such are the objections over some who embrace the incorrect interpretation of <i>Amoris Laetitia<\/i><i>. <\/i>Yes, perhaps I don\u2019t fully understand your suffering, but there is One who does:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet <i>without sin<\/i>. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. (Heb 4:15-16)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus showed us the extent to which you and I must love, to which we must go in order to <i>\u201clove the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.\u201d<\/i> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_12');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_12');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_12\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[12]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_12\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Mark 12:30<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_12').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_12', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, &#8220;Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!&#8221; And having said this he breathed his last\u2026 whoever claims to abide in him ought to live just as he lived. (John 23:46; 1 John 2:6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The struggle with sin and temptation is real; it is common to us all\u2014common even to Jesus. It is also an existential reality that presents us with a fundamental choice:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">If you choose, you can keep the commandments; loyalty is doing the will of God&#8230; Set before you are fire and water; to whatever you choose, stretch out your hand. Before everyone are life and death, whichever they choose will be given them. (Sirach 15:15-17)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But this is why Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, not only to transform us into a \u201cnew creation\u201d through baptism, but also to come <i>&#8220;to the aid of our weakness.\u201d<\/i> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_13');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_13');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_13\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[13]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_13\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Rom 8:26<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_13').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_13', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> What we should be doing is not \u201caccompanying\u201d sinners into a false sense of security and <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-26651\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/spirituality-600x502.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"230\" \/>self-pity, but with genuine compassion and patience, journeying with them to the Father, along the way of Christ, through the means and powerful graces of the Holy Spirit at our disposal. We should reaffirm the grace and mercy available to us in the Sacrament of Confession; the strength and healing awaiting us in the Eucharist; and the daily sustenance one can receive through prayer and the Word of God. In a word, we should be imparting the means and tools for souls to develop an authentic<i> spirituality <\/i>by which they can remain on the Vine, who is Christ, and thus \u201cbear fruit that will remain.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_14');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_14');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_14\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[14]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_14\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. (John 15:5)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It requires a daily picking up of one&#8217;s cross, a renunciation of one\u2019s own will, and following in the footsteps of Our Lord. This cannot be watered down. So, for those who prefer the \u201cwide and easy road,\u201d Pope Francis warns:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>To accompany them would be counterproductive if it became a sort of therapy supporting their self-absorption and ceased to be a pilgrimage with Christ to the Father.<\/b> \u2014<i>Evangelii Gaudium, <\/i>n. 170; <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For as we read in the Gospel, there <i>will<\/i> be a final judgment in which we will all stand before the Creator to answer, by our conduct, how we loved Him, and how we loved our neighbour\u2014whether we crossed the abyss by our obedience or whether we remained aloft on the island of ego. An authentic message of mercy, therefore, cannot exclude this reality nor the reality that <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/hell-is-for-real\/\">Hell is for Real<\/a>: <\/i>that if we reject or ignore the mercy of Christ, we risk\u00a0plunging ourselves into that abyss for eternity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">As for cowards, the unfaithful, the depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers, idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the burning pool of fire and sulfur, which is the second death. (Rev 21:8)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Those are strong words from the mouth of Jesus. But they are tempered by these, which flow from an Ocean of authentic mercy in which our sins are like a single drop:<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><i><b><br \/>\n <\/b><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><i><b><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5543\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/divine_mercy_image7_000-156x300.jpg\" width=\"156\" height=\"300\" \/>Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet\u2026 the greater the misery of a soul, the greater its right to My mercy\u2026 I cannot punish even the greatest sinner if he makes an appeal to My compassion, but on the contrary, I justify him in My unfathomable and inscrutable mercy&#8230; <\/b><b>The flames of mercy are burning Me\u2014clamoring to be spent; I want to keep pouring them out upon souls; souls just don\u2019t want to believe in My goodness&#8230;<\/b><\/i> <i><b>A soul\u2019s greatest wretchedness does not enkindle Me with wrath; but rather, My Heart is moved towards it with great mercy.<\/b><\/i> \u2014Jesus to St. Faustina, <i>Divine Mercy in My Soul<\/i>, Diary, n. 699, 1182, 1146, 177, 1739<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, the one who trusts in God\u2019s mercy and forgiveness will not only find the timely grace they need, moment by moment, but will themselves become vessels of authentic mercy through their witness. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_15');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26631_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26631_1_15');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_15\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[15]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_15\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. 2 Cor 1:3-4<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26631_1_15').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26631_1_15', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><i><b>I am Love and Mercy itself. When a soul approaches Me with trust, I fill it with such an abundance of grace that it cannot be contained within itself, but radiates to other souls.<\/b> <\/i>\u2014Jesus to St. Faustina, <i>Divine Mercy in My Soul<\/i>, Diary, n. 1074<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">For as Christ\u2019s sufferings overflow to us, so through Christ does our encouragement also overflow. (2 Cor 1:5)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the one who caves in to the sophistry of anti-mercy not only marrs their witness as Christians in their church and community and risks giving scandal, but such a sophistry also denigrates the heroic witness of men and women in our time who have resisted sin\u2014particularly those couples who have separated or divorced, but have remained faithful to Jesus at great cost. Yes, Jesus said the road that leads to life is narrow and constricted. For the\u00a0sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood. You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as sons: \u201cMy son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him\u2026&#8221; At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain, yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who are trained by it.
