We must not, however, lose heart, rather we must keep the flame of hope alive in our hearts\u2026<\/b> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Catholic News Agency, January 15th, 2009<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">In terms of my writing apostolate, I have spent the past 12 years striving to help you face this gathering Storm precisely in order that you may <i>not<\/i> <i>be afraid. <\/i>I have spoken about the uncomfortable realities of our times rather than pretending that everything is flowers and rainbows. And I have spoken over and over again about God\u2019s plan, a future of hope for the Church after the trials which she now faces. (Psalm 46)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SHAKEN CONFIDENCE<\/p>\n<p>In the past two years, the \u201cmountains&#8221; of confidence have been toppled in some as one alleged prediction after another has failed to come to pass by certain \u201cseers\u201d and \u201cvisionaries.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26934_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26934_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26934_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26934_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26934_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26934_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/turn-on-the-headlights\/\"><em>Turn on the Headlights<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26934_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26934_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0One such prediction was by an American, Charlie Johnston, who said that, according to his \u201cangel\u201d, the next president of the United States would not come through the normal electoral process and that Obama would remain in power. For my part, I have explicitly warned my readers <i>against<\/i> banking too much on specific predictions like these, including Charlie\u2019s (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/on-discernment\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>On Discernment of the Details<\/i><\/a>). God\u2019s mercy is fluid and, like a good father, He does not treat us according to our sins, especially when we repent. That can change the course of the future in an instant. Still, if a seer feels in good conscience that God is asking them to make such predictions public, then that\u2019s their business; it\u2019s between them, their spiritual director, and\u00a0God (and they must also be responsible for the fallout, either way). However, make no mistake: the negative fallout from these sometimes rash predictions affects every one of us in the Church who are trying to promote the authentic revelations that Our Lord and Lady want us to hear in these times. In that regard, I wholeheartedly agree with Archbishop Rino Fisichella who said,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Confronting the subject of prophecy today is rather like looking at wreckage after a shipwreck.<\/b> \u2014&#8221;Prophecy\u201d in <i>Dictionary of Fundamental Theology<\/i>, p. 788<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>All this said, I have been asked by some readers to clarify my position on Charlie since I not only mentioned him a few times in my writings, but appeared on the same stage with him at an event in Covington, LA in 2015. People have automatically assumed that, as such, I must therefore endorse his prophecies. Rather, what I endorse is the teaching of St. Paul:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good. (1 Thess 5:20-21)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OF \u201cTHE STORM&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Charlie\u2019s spiritual director, a priest in good standing, suggested that he\u00a0contact me three years ago because we were both speaking of a coming \u201cStorm\u201d. This is, after all, what Pope Benedict said above, as well as St. John Paul II:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>It is precisely at the end of the second millennium that immense, threatening clouds converge on the horizon of all humanity and darkness descends upon human souls.<\/b> \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II, from a speech, December, 1983; <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/it\/speeches\/1983\/december\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_spe_19831208_preghiera-immacolata.html\">www.vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the approved revelations of Elizabeth Kindelmann and the writings of Fr. Gobbi, which bear the <i>Imprimatur<\/i>, they also speak of a coming \u201cStorm\u201d upon humanity. Nothing new here, really. So I agreed with Charlie\u2019s statement that a great \u201cStorm\u201d is\u00a0coming.<\/p>\n<p>But how that \u201cStorm\u201d unfolds is another matter. At the conference in Covington, I specifically stated that I could not endorse Charlie\u2019s prophecies <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_26934_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26934_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_26934_1('footnote_plugin_reference_26934_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_26934_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26934_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">see 1:16:03 in this video link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=723VzPxwMms\"><span class=\"footnote_url_wrap\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=723VzPxwMms<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_26934_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_26934_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> but that I appreciated his spirit and faithfulness to Sacred Tradition. It was also very interesting to have an open Q &amp; A with those at the Covington event where we\u00a0shared our respective\u00a0viewpoints.\u00a0In Charlie&#8217;s\u00a0own words:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>One need not agree with all\u2014or even most\u2014of my supernatural claims to welcome me as a fellow worker in the vineyard. Acknowledge God, take the next right step, and be a sign of hope to those around you. That is the sum of my message. All else is explanatory detail.<\/b> \u2014 \u201cMy New Pilgrimage&#8221;, August 2nd, 2015; from <a href=\"https:\/\/charliej373.wordpress.com\/2015\/08\/02\/my-new-pilgrimage\/\"><i>The Next Right Step<\/i><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>In this case, prediction of the future is of secondary importance. What is essential is the actualization of the definitive Revelation.<\/b> \u2014Cardinal Ratzinger (POPE BENEDICT XVI), Message of Fatima, Theological Commentary, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20000626_message-fatima_en.html\">www.vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CLARIFICATIONS<\/p>\n<p>All this said, last May, I began to see that many were still assuming that I endorsed everything Charlie was saying. I might point out, however, that I have shared the podium with several alleged mystics and seers over the years, but <i>none<\/i> who were condemned by their local ordinary or who taught anything contrary to the Catholic faith. A few years back, I also shared the stage with Michael Coren, a Catholic convert and author who has subsequently apostasized. I think most people understand that I am not responsible for what others say and do simply because I spoke at the same event as them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, last May in <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/fear-fire-and-a-rescue\/\">Fear, Fire, and the Rescue?,<\/a> <\/i>I pointed out the Archbishop of Denver\u2019s preliminary assessment of Charlie\u2019s messages and his statement that&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>\u2026the archdiocese encourages [souls] to seek their security in Jesus Christ, the Sacraments, and the Scriptures.<\/b> \u2014Archbishop Sam Aquila, statement from the Archdiocese of Denver, March 1st, 2016; <a href=\"https:\/\/archden.org\/statement-on-the-alleged-visionary-mr-charlie-johnston\/#.WNsKDxjMxE4\">www.archden.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the same time, I felt obligated to address the significant differences that were emerging between my writings and Charlie\u2019s. In <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-coming-judgment\/\">The Coming Judgment<\/a>, <\/i>I noted the Archbishop\u2019s warning for \u201cprudence and caution\u201d regarding Charlie\u2019s alleged prophecies, and went on further to reiterate the eschatological vision of the Church Father\u2019s that differs from what Charlie and some other mainstream eschatologists are proposing. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/is-jesus-really-coming\/\"><i>Is Jesus Really Coming?<\/i><\/a>, I pulled together what is a \u201cprophetic consensus\u201d of 2000 years of Tradition and modern prophecy that paints an unmistakable\u00a0picture of the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Since Charlie\u2019s failed prediction, the Archdiocese of Denver issued another statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>The events of 2016\/17 have shown that Mr. Johnston\u2019s alleged visions were not accurate and the Archdiocese urges the faithful not to condone or support further attempts to reinterpret them as valid.<\/b> \u2014Archdiocese of Denver, Press Release, Feb. 15th, 2017; <a href=\"https:\/\/archden.org\/statement-false-claim-regarding-charlie-johnstons-messages\/#.WNsIQRjMxE4\">archden.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That is my position too, of course, and hopefully every faithful Catholics&#8217;. Again, I draw my readers\u2019 attention to the wisdom of St. Hannibal:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>How many contradictions we see between Saint Brigitte, Mary of Agreda, Catherine Emmerich, etc. <i>We cannot consider the revelations and the locutions as words of Scripture.<\/i> Some of them must be omitted, and others explained in a right, prudent meaning.<\/b> \u2014St. Hannibal Maria di Francia, letter to Bishop Liviero of Citt\u00e0 di Castello, 1925 (emphasis mine)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>\u2026people cannot deal with private revelations as if they were canonical books or decrees of the Holy See. Even the most enlightened persons, especially women, may be greatly mistaken in the visions, revelations, locutions, and inspiration. More than once the divine operation is restrained by human nature\u2026 to consider any expression of the private revelations as dogma or propositions near of faith is always imprudent!<\/b> \u2014a letter to Fr. Peter Bergamaschi<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I hope this clarifies for readers where I stand in regards to the specific prophecies of <i>any<\/i> seer or visionary, no matter how great in stature, level of approval, or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GOING FORWARD<\/p>\n<p>I also hope that the \u201cinquistional&#8221; bearing\u00a0of some Catholics would give way to a more merciful, calm, and mature approach to prophecy which\u2014like it or not\u2014is part of the life of the Church. If we follow Church teaching, live by it, and discern prophecy always in this context, there truly is nothing to be afraid of, even when it comes to prophecies that <i>are<\/i> specific<i>. <\/i>If they do not pass\u00a0the test of orthodoxy, they must be disregarded. But if they do, then, we simply watch and pray and get on with the business of being faithful servants in the daily duties of our vocation.<\/p>\n<p>Many are asking me what I think about the confluence of the 100th year anniversary of Fatima and other such \u201cdate\u201d markers in 2017. Again, I don\u2019t know! It could be significant\u2026 or not at all. I hope people will understand when I say, \u201cDoes it really matter?\u201d What matters are two things: that every day, we place ourselves in a state of grace by recourse to God\u2019s mercy and love so that we are always ready to meet Him at any moment. And second, that we co-operate with His will in the salvation of souls by responding to His personal plan for our lives. Neither of these obligations suggests ignorance of the \u201csigns of the times,\u201d but rather, should strengthen our response to them.<\/p>\n<p><i>Be not afraid!<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: 'Sorts Mill Goudy', serif;
