{"id":27069,"date":"2017-04-13T23:00:15","date_gmt":"2017-04-14T05:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/?p=27069"},"modified":"2017-04-17T21:57:31","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T01:57:31","slug":"the-hour-of-judas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-hour-of-judas\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hour of Judas","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27067 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/thirtypieces.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"329\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>THERE<\/b> is a scene in the Wizard of Oz when the little mutt Toto pulls back the curtain and reveals the truth behind the \u201cWizard.\u201d So too, in Christ&#8217;s Passion, the curtain is drawn back and <i>Judas is revealed<\/i>, setting in motion a chain of events that scatters and divides the flock of Christ&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE HOUR OF JUDAS<\/p>\n<p>Pope Benedict gave a powerful insight into Judas that is a window into the <i>Judases of our times: <\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Judas is neither a master of evil nor the figure of a demoniacal power of darkness but rather a sycophant who bows down before the anonymous power of changing moods and current fashion. But it is precisely this anonymous power that crucified Jesus, for it was anonymous voices that cried, \u201cAway with him! Crucify him!\u201d<\/b> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, <a href=\"http:\/\/catholicnewslive.com\/story\/569708\">catholicnewslive.com<\/a><\/span><i><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What Benedict is saying is that the rebellious current flowing through Judas\u2019s heart was a spirit of <i>moral relativism. <\/i>And this, he warns, is the zeitgeist our times&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>\u2026a dictatorship of relativism that recognizes nothing as definite, and which leaves as the ultimate measure only one\u2019s ego and desires. Having a clear faith, according to the credo of the Church, is often labeled as fundamentalism. Yet, relativism, that is, letting oneself be tossed and \u2018swept along by every wind of teaching\u2019, appears the sole attitude acceptable to today\u2019s standards.<\/b> \u2014Cardinal Ratzinger (POPE BENEDICT XVI) pre-conclave Homily, April 18th, 2005<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the true betrayal at this hour in the world: politicians, educators, scientists, doctors, judges, and yes, <i>clergy<\/i>, who are caving in to the changing moods and current fashions of our times as they abandon moral absolutes and reject the natural law. The courage to reject this powerful current\u00a0has been long drained from the hearts of men who have fled the truth as quickly as the Apostles fled the Garden. We can\u00a0hear once again the desolate\u00a0words of Pontius Pilate: <i>What is truth? <\/i>The answer today is the same as that of those anonymous\u00a0powers:\u00a0\u201cWhatever we say it is!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And Jesus said nothing in reply, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-silent-answer\/\">The Silent Answer<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0not only because He had already said everything, but perhaps to symbolize His Church who, one say day, would fall silent before a world no longer interested in the truth. Yes, the cover of <i>Time<\/i> Magazine perceptively asked:<em> Is\u00a0Truth Dead?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27068 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/truthdead-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BETRAYED!<\/p>\n<p>The past month or so, there has been a clear word resonating in my heart beneath the surface of world affairs:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>Betrayed<\/i>!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Those who are in power\u2014whether religious or secular\u2014are betraying humanity in the most perilous ways. But something else is happening at this hour:\u00a0<i>Judas is being revealed<\/i>\u2026 and the result is the sifting of the weeds from the wheat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Judas is being revealed in the world<\/u><\/p>\n<p>It was money that tempted Judas then, as it does now. Money, security, and a false hope that the State, science and <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-27071\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/judas1_1.jpg\" width=\"247\" height=\"167\" \/>technology can supply man\u2019s needs and fulfill his desires. Behind this\u00a0empty promise, says the Catechism, is essentially the <i>spirit of Antichrist<\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; color: #070d5c;\"><b>The persecution that accompanies [the Church\u2019s] pilgrimage on earth will unveil the &#8220;mystery of iniquity&#8221; in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth.<\/b> <\/span>\u2014<i>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/i>n. 675<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that the\u00a0world is rejecting spirituality; it is rejecting <i>religion<\/i>. A recent poll in Canada, for example, shows more and more people rejecting traditional religion but still maintaining some kind of belief in a higher being. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. That is then seemingly freedom\u2014for the sole reason that it is liberation from the previous situation. <\/b>\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, <i>Light of the World, A Conversation with Peter Seewald<\/i>, p. 52<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As a result, said Benedict, a &#8220;new intolerance is spreading, that is quite obvious.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>A humanism which excludes God is an inhuman humanism.<\/b>\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, <i>Caritas in Veritate<\/i>, n. 78<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, for the past decade in particular, the \u201cmasters of conscience&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. In the name of tolerance, tolerance is being abolished\u2026<\/b> \u2014<i>Light of the World, A Conversation with Peter Seewald<\/i>, p. 53<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Revolution Revealed<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But something remarkable happened through the unlikely election of Donald Trump to the presidency. Suddenly, the curtain was pulled back from the wizardry of the political \u201cLeft\u201d and, for a moment, Judas has been\u00a0exposed. Suddenly, <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-27076\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/ozcurtain.jpg\" width=\"228\" height=\"295\" \/>what people were told was inevitable\u2014that they must accept abortion, syncretism, transgender bathrooms, the end of sovereignty, and above all, the end of Christianity\u2014was no longer&#8230; inevitable. It could be summed up in a statement Trump made\u00a0to a convention room of followers shortly after he won the election: \u201cMerry Christmas. <i>Did you hear that? <\/i>It\u2019s okay to say \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d again.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Fox News radio broadcast<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>But in places like Canada and most other Western nations, the curtain still hides the charlatans who promise everything, but can deliver little\u2014little that satisfies the deepest longing of man, that is. No, the all-powerful wizards continue their social\u00a0experiment with the entire order of human affairs while feigning astonishment at anyone who\u00a0confronts the \u201cnew religion\u201d, showering them with the same scoffs, spittle, and outright lies\u00a0that surrounded Jesus on this night when He was dragged before the Sanhedrin.<\/p>\n<p>But neither should Christian Americans assume the night is over. No, I think far from it. The curtain is slowly being drawn\u00a0again as Judas throws a fit whilst\u00a0spinning\u00a0fiery balls of contempt\u00a0and smoke and mirrors in attempt to\u00a0frighten\u00a0anyone who dare to buck the changing moods and current fashions of the day\u2014no matter how nonsensical they are. There is almost a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-growing-mob\/\">mob<\/a> mentality rising in America&#8230; like\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-growing-mob\/\">mob<\/a> who came and dragged Jesus from the Garden. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[8]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-growing-mob\/\">The Growing Mob<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_8').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_8', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> That was the first revolution against Christ\u2026 and now, I believe another\u00a0revolution is about to break out.\u00a0Yes, there is another word that\u00a0I sense Jesus repeating in my heart\u00a0over and over again these days:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/revolution\/\"><i>Revolution!<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I recall again\u00a0the words allegedly spoken twice since 2008 by St. Th\u00e9r\u00e8se de Lisieux to a humble\u00a0and very <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-27073\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/therese-chains.jpg\" width=\"247\" height=\"189\" \/>mystical priest I know in America. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_9');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_27069_1('footnote_plugin_reference_27069_1_9');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_9\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[9]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_9\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/revolution\/\">Revolution!<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_27069_1_9').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_27069_1_9', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0The first time he heard these words was in a dream; the second time audibly during the Mass:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Just as my country [France], which was the eldest daughter of the Church, killed her priests and faithful, so will the persecution of the Church take place in your own country. In a short time, the clergy will go into exile and will be unable to enter the churches openly. They will minister to the faithful in clandestine places. The faithful will be deprived of the &#8220;kiss of Jesus&#8221; [Holy Communion]. The laity will bring Jesus to them in the absence of the priests.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, on the night that He was betrayed, Jesus gave Judas a <em>&#8220;morsel of bread.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0The Gospel of John says that Satan then\u00a0entered Judas who\u00a0<em>&#8220;took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>Judas is being revealed in the Church.<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Just as\u00a0Judas was a participant in the first Mass, so too, Judas is among us again in those who use the pretext of the Church to advance their own ideologies, their own sophistries and casuistry. And here, I am speaking of those religious and clergy who have used their orders and vows to advance a subjective and sterile\u00a0gospel.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>Judas could have gone away too, as did many of the disciples; indeed, perhaps if he had been honest he would have been bound to leave. Instead he stayed on with Jesus. He did not stay out of faith or out of love, but rather with the secret intention of taking revenge on the Teacher\u2026 The problem was that Judas did not go away and his greatest sin was his deceitfulness, which is the mark of the Devil.<\/b> \u2014POPE BENEDICT, Angelus, August 26th, 2012; <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/benedict-xvi\/en\/angelus\/2012\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_ang_20120826.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-27074\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/judas-kiss.jpg\" width=\"258\" height=\"169\" \/>Here too, it is \u201cwith a kiss\u201d that \u201ccareer Catholics\u201d have often &#8220;embraced&#8221; the Church, whilst rejecting\u00a0the Truth. They have not \u201cbeen honest\u201d and simply parted ways, but instead, have remained in positions of power, feigning obedience all the while promoting an anti-Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>But just as the unorthodoxy of the presidency of Donald Trump has exposed many Judases, so too, the somewhat unconventional pontificate of Pope Francis has exposed the Judases who, until now, have been fairly unknown. And like the rest of the world, their exposure pivots on issues surrounding human sexuality and the family.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>\u2026the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family\u2026 anyone who operates for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be contended and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue, however, Our Lady has already crushed its head.<\/b> \u2014Sr. Lucia, seer of Fatima, in an interview with Cardinal Carlo Caffara, Archbishop of Bologna, from the magazine <i>Voce di Padre Pio<\/i>, March 2008; cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/rorate-caeli.blogspot.com\/2015\/06\/cardinal-what-sister-lucia-told-me.html?m=1\">rorate-caeli.blogspot.com<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In one of his most powerful speeches shortly after the opening sessions of the Synod on the family, Pope Francis issued a warning that strikingly paralleled the five corrections Jesus made toward the \u201cJudases\u201d in His seven letters to the churches in the Book of Revelation (see <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-five-corrections\/\">The Five Corrections<\/a><\/i>). He warned against a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/revolution\/undefined\">false mercy<\/a> and&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>The temptation to come down off the Cross, to please the people, and not stay there, in order to fulfil the will of the Father; to bow down to a worldly spirit instead of purifying it and bending it to the Spirit of God.<\/b> \u2014<a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/pope-francis-closing-synod-speech-received-with-standing-ovation-92979\/\"><em>Catholic News Agency<\/em><\/a>, October 18th, 2014<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, it is precisely this kind of \u201cworldliness\u201d that led to Judas\u2019s apostasy. A worldliness that&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>\u2026can lead us to abandon our traditions and negotiate our loyalty to God who is always faithful. This\u2026 is called apostasy, which\u2026 is a form of \u201cadultery\u201d which takes place when we negotiate the essence of our being: loyalty to the Lord.<\/b> \u2014POPE FRANCIS from a homily, Vatican Radio, November 18th, 2013<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><b>&#8230;today we see it in truly terrifying form: the greatest persecution of the Church does not come from external enemies, but is born of sin within the Church.<\/b> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, interview on flight to Lisbon, Portugal; LifeSiteNews, May 12th, 2010<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, I know some of my readers are asking why Pope Francis himself has not clarified certain matters of teaching, or in some cases, has put these apparent Judases in positions of power? I don&#8217;t have the answer. I mean, why did Jesus choose Judas in the first place? In\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-dipping-dish\/\">The Dipping Dish<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>I asked why Our Lord allow Judas to hold such positions of power in His \u201ccuria\u201d and to be so near Him, to even hold the money bag? Could it be that Jesus wanted to give Judas every opportunity to repent? Or was it to show us that Love does not pick the perfect? Or that when a souls seems utterly lost that still <em>\u201clove hopes all things\u201d<\/em>? Alternatively, was Jesus allowing the Apostles to be sifted, to separate the loyal from the unfaithful, <i>so that the apostate would show his true colors<\/i>?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">It is you who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred one on me, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Simon, Simon, behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat\u2026 (Luke 22:28-31)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>RESPONDING\u2026 LIKE JESUS<\/p>\n<p>I will write more on the <i>Great Division<\/i> that is occurring at this hour in the Church and the world. But what Jesus desires\u00a0is that we not set ourselves against others, but &#8220;unite&#8221; ourselves to them in love. That\u2019s what Jesus did on His\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27075 alignright\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/jesusveron-814x1024.jpg\" width=\"222\" height=\"279\" \/>way to Calvary: He embraced in His heart every sinner He encountered with patience, mercy, and forgiveness\u2014including those who mocked, scourged, and crucified Him. In this way, He touched and converted some of these Judases along the way.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Truly, this was the Son of God! (the centurion, Matt 27:54)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For really, we do not know who are the \u201cJudases&#8221; and who are the \u201cPeters\u201d who, though they may deny Christ now, may also repent and accept\u00a0Him later <i>precisely <\/i>because of the witness of our love and forgiveness.
