 <\/p>\n

ONE<\/b> of the most fascinating aspects of the early Church\u00a0is that,\u00a0after Pentecost, they immediately, almost instinctively, formed\u00a0community. <\/i>They\u00a0sold everything they had and held it in common so that everyone\u2019s needs were cared for.\u00a0<\/i>And yet, no where do we see an explicit command from Jesus to do as such.\u00a0It was so radical, so contrary to the thinking of the time, that these early communities\u00a0transformed the world around them.<\/p>\n

The hand of the Lord was with them\u00a0and a great number who believed turned to the Lord\u2026 they sent Barnabas to go to Antioch.\u00a0When he arrived and saw the grace of God,\u00a0he rejoiced and encouraged them all\u00a0to remain faithful to the Lord in firmness of heart. (Today\u2019s first reading)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The hand of the Lord was with them because they were living the teaching of Jesus authentically<\/i>\u2014a teaching that, although it did not explicitly order them to form communities, it did so\u00a0implicitly\u2014if not by His own example in gathering the Twelve Apostles around him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another\u2019s feet\u2026 For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest\u2026 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.\u00a0(John 13:14; Luke 9:48; John 13:34-35)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Jesus does not make miracles and\u00a0signs and wonders the mark of discipleship\u00a0(at least not primarily), but\u00a0love,\u00a0<\/i>which is at the center of unity. Thus, whether it is\u00a0the community of religious orders, the community of the family, or the community of a husband and wife,\u00a0love that serves\u00a0<\/i>is what transforms it, making it the light of Christ in the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

…it was in Antioch that the disciples\u00a0were first called Christians. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

That\u2019s because it was there that they became \u201cother Christs\u201d in the world.<\/p>\n

\n

The works I do in my Father’s name testify to me\u2026 The Father and I are one. (Today\u2019s Gospel)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

People listen more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and when people do listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014POPE PAUL VI,\u00a0Evangelization in the Modern World,<\/em>\u00a0n. 41<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If the world is in a crisis of faith today, it is not for lack of 24 hour Christian radio and television stations; if the world cannot find Christ, it is not for a lack of churches and tabernacles; if the world does not believe in the Gospel, it is not for a lack of Bibles and spiritual <\/span>books. Rather, it is because they can no longer\u00a0find those communities of love and service, those places where \u201ctwo or three are gathered\u201d in His name\u2026\u00a0in the name of Love.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to live\u00a0just as he lived. (1 John 2:5-6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
