I have the <em>Laudate<\/em> app on my phone where I listen to the daily readings, listen to a reflection by Presentation Ministries and then listen to someone leading the rosary. Am I praying with the heart as you recommend in your writings?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, I have written and spoken in many places about the necessity to not only pray, but to <i>pray with the heart. <\/i>It is the difference, really, between reading about swimming\u2026 and jumping head first into the lake.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>OUR LOVE-CRAZY GOD<\/p>\n<p>What makes Christianity stand alone among all the religions of the world is the revelation that our God, the one true God, is a loving and personal God.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-30025\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Embracing-Hope-by-Lea-Mallett-1.png\" width=\"307\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Embracing-Hope-by-Lea-Mallett-1.png 475w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Embracing-Hope-by-Lea-Mallett-1-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/>Our God does not only reign from on high, but has descended to earth, taken our flesh and humanity, and with it, all our sufferings, joys, expectations, and limitations. He became one of us so that we, His creatures, could know that our God is not a distant, impersonal power, but a close, loving Person. There is no other religion on earth that has such a God, nor such a truth that has not only transformed hearts, but entire continents.<\/p>\n<p>So, when I say \u201c<i>pray from the heart<\/i>,\u201d I am\u00a0really saying: respond to God the way He is responding to you\u2014with a burning, passionate, totally committed Heart. He is thirsting for you, He who offers you the \u201cliving water\u201d of His love and presence in order to satiate the deepest desires of your heart.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; color: #06094f;\"><b>&#8220;If you knew the gift of God!&#8221; The wonder of prayer is revealed beside the well where we come seeking water: there, Christ comes to meet every human being. It is he who first seeks us and asks us for a drink. Jesus thirsts; his asking arises from the depths of God&#8217;s desire for us. Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God&#8217;s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him.<\/b> <\/span>\u2014<i>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/i> (CCC),<i> <\/i>n. 2560<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE PASSIONATE PRAY-ER<\/p>\n<p>So, on the one hand, praying on the treadmill is a good thing, a great way to fill in the time during a workout. In fact, we should \u201c<i>pray always<\/i>\u201d, as Jesus said.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_30030_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30030_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_30030_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30030_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_30030_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_30030_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Luke 18:1<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_30030_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_30030_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #06094f; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>&#8220;We must remember God more often than we draw breath.&#8221; But we cannot pray &#8220;<i>at all times<\/i>&#8221; if we do not pray at specific times, consciously willing it. These are the special times of Christian prayer, both in intensity and duration.<\/b><\/span> \u2014CCC<i>, <\/i>n. 2697<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is good, then, to pray at specific times like my reader. But there is more: there is the matter of the \u201cintensity\u201d of our prayer. Do I \u201cpray with the heart\u201d or only the head?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #06094f; font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>&#8230;in naming the source of prayer, Scripture speaks sometimes of the soul or the spirit, but most often of the heart (more than a thousand times). According to Scripture, it is the heart that prays. If our heart is far from God, the words of prayer are in vain.<\/b> <\/span>\u2014CCC. 2697<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We have to be careful, then, that our prayer is not a matter of only reading or repeating words, or merely passive listening, as one would do if the radio was\u00a0on in the background. Think of a wife sitting at the table speaking to her <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-30026\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/newspaperhubby-1024x684.jpg\" width=\"287\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/newspaperhubby-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/newspaperhubby-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/newspaperhubby-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/newspaperhubby-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/newspaperhubby-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/newspaperhubby.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/>husband while he reads the newspaper. He\u2019s <i>kind of<\/i> listening, but his heart is not in it, into her\u2014her thoughts, her emotions, her feelings, her simple need to not only be heard, but <i>listened<\/i> to. So it is with God. We should engage Him with the heart, not just the mind; we should \u201clook\u201d at Him, as He looks at us. This is called contemplation. Prayer should become an exchange of not only words, but love. Passion. That is prayer. Another more graphic example is that of a married couple who has intercourse for pleasure alone as opposed to \u201cmaking love\u201d. The former is taking; the latter is giving.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE DIVINE EXCHANGE<\/p>\n<p>Prayer is giving to God, while at the same time receiving what He in turn is\u00a0giving. It is an exchange of selves: my <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-30027\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/childlike-1024x1024.jpg\" width=\"267\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/childlike-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/childlike-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/childlike-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/childlike-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/childlike-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/childlike.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>poor self, for His Divine Self; my distorted self-image for the true image of God in which I am created. And only He can give this: Redemption is His gift in return for my faith in Him.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #06094f; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>Contemplation is a gaze of faith, fixed on Jesus. &#8220;I look at him and he looks at me\u201d\u2026 This focus on Jesus is a renunciation of self. His gaze purifies our heart; the light of the countenance of Jesus illumines the eyes of our heart and teaches us to see everything in the light of his truth and his compassion for all men. Contemplation also turns its gaze on the mysteries of the life of Christ. Thus it learns the &#8220;interior knowledge of our Lord,&#8221; the more to love him and follow him.<\/b><\/span> \u2014CCC, n. 2715<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Moreover, God, who created you, will never let you down. This, too, is part of the Great Love Story of Christianity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. (2 Tim 2:13)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>TRUSTING LOVE<\/p>\n<p>It also true that some of us carry deep and painful wounds that inhibit our ability to trust God\u2014betrayals, disappointments, father wounds, mother wounds, priest wounds, broken memories and crushed hopes. And so, we project these on God; we say He is either cruel, He doesn\u2019t care, He is punishing us\u2026 or He doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-30033\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/thecross-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"538\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/thecross-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/thecross-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/thecross-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/thecross-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/thecross-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/thecross.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And now, look at the Cross. Tell me that He does not care. Tell me that, when <i>we<\/i> were crucifying Him, He was the one punishing. Tell me that, when <i>we<\/i> were nailing His hands to the tree, His were the hands raised in wrath. Tell me, after 2000 years since has He suffered, died, and rose from the dead, that it isn&#8217;t He who has led you to this writing. Yes, the Love Story continues, and <em>your name is written on the next page<\/em>. Life, time, and history continue to unfold because God loves this broken humanity, God thirsts for us, and God is waiting for you\u2026 to love Him.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;they have forsaken me, the source of living waters; they have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. (Jer 2:13)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #06094f; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>&#8220;You would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.\u201d &#8230;Prayer is the response of faith to the free promise of salvation and also a response of love to the thirst of the only Son of God.<\/b> <\/span>\u2014CCC, n. 2561<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To love Him, then, is to pray to Him with the heart, or in other words, to be\u00a0with Him always and everywhere, the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-30029\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/contemplation-1024x684.jpg\" width=\"333\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/contemplation-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/contemplation-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/contemplation-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/contemplation-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/contemplation-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/contemplation.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/>way two lovers want to always be together.
