Moreover, there are times when, according to our own reasoning, the path that we&#8217;ve set forward would bring about the most good. &#8220;If I get this job, then&#8230; if I am physically healed, then&#8230; if I go there, then&#8230;.&#8221;\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">And then, we hit a dead-end. Our\u00a0solutions evaporate and plans unravel. And in those moments, we can be tempted to say, &#8220;Really, God?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">St. Paul knew he had a mission to preach the Gospel. But several times he was thwarted, whether by the Spirit, shipwreck, or persecution. In each of those times, his abandonment to God&#8217;s Will produced an unforeseen fruit. Take Paul&#8217;s imprisonment in Rome. For two years, he was confined to his desk, literally in chains.\u00a0But had it not been for those chains, the letters to the Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians and Philemon may never have been written. Paul could never have foreseen the fruit of his suffering, that those letters would eventually be read by\u00a0<em>billions\u2014<\/em>though his faith told him that God works all things to the good for those who love Him. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_30269_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30269_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_30269_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30269_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_30269_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_30269_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. (First reading)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">To\u00a0have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/31\/an-invincible-faith-in-jesus\/\">an invincible faith in Jesus<\/a>\u00a0means to surrender not only your plans, but <em>everything<\/em>\u00a0into the hands of God. To say, &#8220;Lord, not only this plan, but my entire life belongs now to You.&#8221; This is\u00a0what Jesus means when He says, &#8220;<em>every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_30269_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30269_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_30269_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30269_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_30269_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_30269_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Luke 14:33<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_30269_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_30269_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> It is to place your entire life at His disposal; it is to be willing to go into foreign territory for His sake; to take a different job; to move to another location; to embrace a particular suffering. You cannot be His disciple if you say, &#8220;Sunday Mass, yes, that I&#8217;ll do. But not this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">If we are afraid to surrender\u00a0ourselves to Him like this\u2014afraid that God might ask us to\u00a0embrace something we don&#8217;t like\u2014then we are not yet fully abandoned to Him. We are saying, &#8220;I trust You&#8230; but not totally. I trust that you are God&#8230; but\u00a0not the most loving of fathers.&#8221; And yet, He who-is-love-itself is the best of parents. He is\u00a0also the most just of all judges. So whatever you give to Him, He will give back to you a hundred fold.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life. (Matthew 19:29)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Today&#8217;s Gospel ends with St. John writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">There are also many other things that Jesus did,\u00a0but if these were to be described individually,\u00a0I do not think the whole world would contain the books\u00a0that would be written.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Maybe\u00a0John thought that was it\u2014he would write no more\u2014and simply dedicate himself to starting churches and spreading the Word like the rest of the Apostles. Instead, he was exiled to the island of Patmos. Perhaps, he was tempted to despair, assuming that Satan had just won a victory. Little did he know that God would give him a vision about the\u00a0<em>chaining of Satan\u00a0<\/em>that would also be read by billions in what would be called the <em>The Apocalypse<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">On this memorial of the African martyrs, St. Charles Lwanga and his companions, we recall his words before they were executed: &#8220;A well which has many sources never runs dry. When we are gone, others will come after us.&#8221; Some\u00a0three\u00a0years later, ten thousand had converted to Christianity in southern Uganda.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Here again, we see that our abandonment to suffering, when united to Christ, can produce the most unforeseeable fruits, within and without.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><i><strong>\u2026in suffering there is concealed <\/strong><\/i><strong>a particular <i>power that draws a person interiorly close to Christ, <\/i>a special grace\u2026 so that every form of suffering, given fresh life by the power of this Cross, should become no longer the weakness of man but the power of God. <\/strong>\u2014POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/apost_letters\/1984\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_apl_11021984_salvifici-doloris_en.html\">Salvifici Doloris<\/a>, <\/em>Apostolic Letter, n. 26<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">In fact, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/31\/an-invincible-faith-in-jesus\/\">An Invincible Faith in Jesus<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was written as a result of a trial my wife and I are presently <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30271\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/springoffaitt-682x1024.jpg\" width=\"304\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/springoffaitt-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/springoffaitt-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/springoffaitt-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/springoffaitt-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/springoffaitt.jpg 1333w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/>undergoing with our farm. Without this trial, I don&#8217;t believe that writing, which in just a few days has helped so many, would ever have come about. You see, every time we abandon ourselves to God, He continues to write our\u00a0<em>testimony.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>The Gospel of suffering is being written unceasingly, and it speaks unceasingly with the words of this strange paradox: the springs of divine power gush forth precisely in the midst of human weakness.<\/strong> \u2014POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/apost_letters\/1984\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_apl_11021984_salvifici-doloris_en.html\">Salvifici Doloris<\/a>, <\/em>Apostolic Letter, n. 26<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">So, I wish to also repeat the famous\u00a0words of St.\u00a0John Paul II:\u00a0<em>Do not\u00a0be\u00a0afraid.\u00a0<\/em>Don&#8217;t be afraid to open wide your heart, <em>letting go<\/em> of everything\u2014all control, all desires, all ambitions, all\u00a0plans, all attachments\u2014so as to receive His Divine Will as your food and only sustenance in this life. It is like a seed that, when received\u00a0in the rich soil of a heart totally abandoned\u00a0to God, will bear fruit thirty, sixty, a hundredfold. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_30269_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30269_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_30269_1('footnote_plugin_reference_30269_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_30269_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_30269_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Mark 4:8<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_30269_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_30269_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The key is for the seed to &#8220;rest&#8221; in an abandoned heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Who knows who will eat of the unforeseeable fruit of your\u00a0<em>fiat?<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">O Lord, my heart is not lifted up,\u00a0my eyes are not raised too high;\u00a0I do not occupy myself with things\u00a0too great and too marvelous for me.\u00a0But I have calmed and quieted my soul,\u00a0like a child quieted at its mother&#8217;s breast;\u00a0like a child that is quieted is my soul.
