JOHN XXIII<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">Liturgical texts\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/101117.cfm\"><i>here<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>BEFORE<\/strong>\u00a0teaching the &#8220;Our Father&#8221;, Jesus says to the Apostles:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">This is <em>how<\/em> you are to pray. (Matt 6:9)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Yes,\u00a0<em>how,\u00a0<\/em>not necessarily\u00a0<em>what.\u00a0<\/em>That is, Jesus was revealing not so much the content of what to pray, but the disposition of the heart; He was not giving a specific prayer so much as showing us <em>how<\/em>, as God&#8217;s children, to approach Him.\u00a0For just a couple verses earlier, Jesus said, <em>&#8220;In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Matt 6:7<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Rather&#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. (John 4:23)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">To worship the Father in &#8220;spirit&#8221; means to worship Him <em>with the heart<\/em>, to speak to Him as a loving father. To worship the Father in &#8220;truth&#8221; means to come to Him in the reality of who He is\u2014and who I am, and am not. If we meditate on what Jesus is teaching here, we will find that the Our Father reveals to us how to pray in &#8220;spirit and truth&#8221;. How to\u00a0<em>pray with the heart.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">OUR&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Immediately, Jesus teaches us that we are not alone. That is, as Mediator between God and man, Jesus takes up our prayer and brings it before the Father. Through the Incarnation, Jesus is one of us. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. (Heb 4:15-16)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">FATHER&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Jesus was explicit about the kind of heart we should have:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. (Mark 10:25)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">To address God as &#8220;Abba&#8221;, as &#8220;Father&#8221;, reinforces that we are not orphans. That God is not just our Creator, but a father, a provider, a caregiver. This is an extraordinary revelation of who the First Person of the Trinity is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Can a mother forget her infant,\u00a0be without tenderness for the child of her womb?\u00a0Even should she forget,\u00a0I will never forget you. (Isaiah 49:15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">WHO ART IN HEAVEN&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">We begin our prayer with confidence, but continue in humility as we gaze upward.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Jesus wants us to fix our eyes, not on temporal cares, but on Heaven. <em>&#8220;Seek first the Kingdom of God,&#8221;<\/em> He said. As <em>&#8220;strangers and sojourners&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. 1 Pet 2:11<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> here on earth, we should&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. (Colossians 3:2)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">By fixing our hearts on eternity, our problems and worries take on their proper perspective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">HALLOWED BY THY NAME&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Before we make our petitions to the Father, we first acknowledge that He is God\u2014and I am not. That He is mighty, awesome, and all-powerful. That I am just a creature, and He the Creator. In this simple phrase of honouring His name, we give thanks and praise to Him for who He is, and ever good thing that He has bestowed upon us. Moreover, we acknowledge that everything comes by His permissive will, and therefore, is a reason to give thanks that He knows what is best, even in difficult situations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">It is this act of trust, of thanksgiving and praise, that draws us into the presence of God.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Enter his gates with thanksgiving,\u00a0his courts with praise.\u00a0Give thanks to him, bless his name&#8230; (Psalm 100:4)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">It is this act of praise that, in fact, helps me begin to a childlike heart again.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">THY KINGDOM COME&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Jesus would often say that the Kingdom is near. He was teaching that, while eternity comes after death, the Kingdom can come\u00a0<i>now,<\/i>\u00a0in the present moment.<i>\u00a0<\/i>The Kingdom was often seen as synonymous with the Holy Spirit. In fact, &#8216;in\u00a0place of this petition, some early Church Fathers record: \u201cMay your Holy Spirit come upon us and cleanse us.\u201d&#8217; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. footnote in the NAB on Luke 11:2<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Jesus is teaching that the beginning of good work, of every duty, of ever breath we take, must find its power and fecundity from an interior life: from the Kingdom within. Thy Kingdom Come is like saying, &#8220;Come Holy Spirit, change my heart! Renew my mind! Fill my life! Let Jesus reign in me!&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matt 4:17)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">THY WILL BE DONE&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">The Kingdom of God is intrinsically tied to the Divine Will. Wherever His will is done, there is the Kingdom, for the Divine Will contains every spiritual good. The Divine Will is Love itself; and God is love. This is why Jesus likened the Father&#8217;s Will to His &#8220;food&#8221;: to live in the Divine Will was to live in the bosom of the Father. To pray in this way, then, is to become like a little child, especially in the midst of trial. It is the hallmark of a heart that is abandoned to God, mirrored in the Two Hearts of Mary and Jesus:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">May it be done to me according to your will. (Luke 1:38)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Not My will but yours be done. (Luke 22:42)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ON EARTH, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Jesus teaches us that our hearts should be so open and abandoned to the Divine Will, that it will be accomplished in us &#8220;as it is in Heaven.&#8221; That is, in Heaven, the saints not only &#8220;do&#8221; the will of God but &#8220;live in&#8221; the Will of God. That is, their own wills and that of the Holy Trinity are one and the same. So it is as if to say, &#8220;Father, may your will not only be done in me, but may it become my own so that Your thoughts are my thoughts, Your breath my breath, Your activity my activity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">&#8230;he emptied himself,\u00a0taking the form of a slave&#8230;\u00a0he humbled himself,\u00a0becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. (Phil 2:7-8)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">The Holy Trinity reigns wherever the Will of God is lived, and a such, is brought to perfection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him&#8230; whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. (John 14:23; 1 John 2:5)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">When the Israelites gathered manna in the desert, they were instructed to keep no more than their daily need. When they failed to listen, the manna would become wormy and stank. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Exodus 16:20<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Jesus also teaches us to\u00a0<em>trust\u00a0<\/em>the Father for exactly what we need each day, on the condition that we should seek His Kingdom first, and not our own. Our &#8220;daily bread&#8221; is not only the provisions we need, but the food of His Divine Will, and most especially, the Word Incarnate: Jesus, in the Holy Eucharist. To only pray for &#8220;daily&#8221; bread is to trust like a little child.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">So do not worry and say, \u2018What are we to eat?\u2019 or \u2018What are we to drink?\u2019 or \u2018What are we to wear?\u2019 &#8230;Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. (Matt 6:31-33)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yet, how often I fail to call on Our Father! To praise and thank Him in all circumstances; to seek His Kingdom before my own; to prefer His Will to mine. But Jesus, knowing human weakness and that we would frequently fail, teaches us to approach the Father to ask for forgiveness, and to trust in His Divine Mercy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing. (1 John 1:9)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The humility with which we begin the Our Father is only sustained when we further acknowledge the fact that we are <em>all<\/em> sinners; that even though my brother has injured me, I too have injured others. As a matter of justice, I must also forgive my neighbour if I too wish to be forgiven. Whenever I find this invocation difficult to pray, I need only call to mind my countless faults. This invocation, then, is not only just, but generates humility and compassion toward others.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">You shall love your neighbour as yourself. (Matt 22:39)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">It expands my heart to love like God loves, and thus helps me to become even more childlike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Blessed are the merciful,\u00a0for they will be shown mercy. (\u00a0Matthew 5:7)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since God <em>&#8220;tempts no one,&#8221;<\/em> says St. James, <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_31456_1('footnote_plugin_reference_31456_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_31456_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_31456_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Nor would He teach us to pray for deliverance if it did not in fact truly aid us in the battle against the powers of darkness. This final invocation only further seals the importance of our dependence upon the Father and our need to be like little children in order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. It also reminds us that we share in His authority over the powers of evil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Behold, I have given you the power \u2018to tread upon serpents\u2019 and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10-19-20)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">AMEN<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">In closing, because Jesus has taught us\u00a0<em>how\u00a0<\/em>to pray by using these very words, the Our Father, then, becomes a perfect prayer in itself.
