Jesus put it another way:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one\u2019s life for one\u2019s friends. (John 15:12-13)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We are to love as Jesus loved us. In His personal mission, which was a mission for the entire world, it involved death upon a cross. But how are we who are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, priests and nuns, to love when we are not called to such a literal martyrdom?\u00a0Jesus revealed this too, not only on Calvary, but each and every day as He walked among us. As St. Paul said,<em> &#8220;He emptied himself,\u00a0taking the form of a slave&#8230;&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32654_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32654_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32654_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32654_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32654_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32654_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">(Philippians 2:5-8<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_32654_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32654_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> How?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s Gospel (liturgical texts\u00a0<i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/011018.cfm\">here<\/a>)<\/i>, we read how the Lord left the Synagogue after preaching and headed over to Simon Peter&#8217;s home. But rather than finding rest, Jesus was immediately called upon to heal. <em>Without hesitation<\/em>, Jesus ministered to Simon&#8217;s mother. And then that evening,\u00a0at sunset, the entire town seemed to turn up at His door\u2014the sick, diseased, and demonized. And <em>&#8220;He cured many.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0With hardly any sleep, Jesus rose very early before dawn to at last find a <em>&#8220;deserted place, where he prayed.&#8221;<\/em> But then&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Simon and those who were with him pursued him\u00a0and on finding him said, &#8220;Everyone is looking for you.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus did not say, &#8220;Tell them to wait,&#8221; or &#8220;Give me a few minutes&#8221;, or &#8220;I am tired. Let me sleep.&#8221; Rather,\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Let us go on to the nearby villages\u00a0that I may preach there also.\u00a0For this purpose have I come.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It is as if Jesus were a slave to His Apostles, a slave to the people who relentlessly sought Him out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So too, the dishes, meals, and laundry relentlessly call to us. They beckon us to disrupt our rest and relaxation, to serve, and serve again. Our careers that feed our families and pay the bills beckon us at\u00a0dawn, pull us from comfortable beds, and command our service. Then come the throngs of unexpected demands and reverses knocking at the door, the sickness of a loved one, the car needing repair, the sidewalk needing shovelling, or an elderly parent needing assistance and comfort. It is then that the Cross really begins to take shape in our lives. It is then that the nails of Love and <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-32659\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laundrymountain-1024x976.jpg\" width=\"315\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laundrymountain-1024x976.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laundrymountain-1536x1465.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laundrymountain-300x286.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laundrymountain-768x732.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/laundrymountain.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/>Service begin to really pierce the limits of our patience and charity, and reveal the degree to which we really love as Jesus loved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yes, sometimes Calvary looks more like a mountain of laundry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And these daily Calvaries that we are called to climb according to our vocation\u2014if they are to transform us and the world around us\u2014they must be done with love. Love does not hesitate. It rises to the duty of the moment when it calls, leaving behind its own interests, and seeking the needs of the other. Even their <em>unreasonable<\/em> needs.<\/p>\n<p>After reading\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/08\/the-cross-the-cross\/\">The Cross, the Cross!<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>one reader shared how he hesitated when his wife asked him to light a fire in the fireplace for her dinner party that night.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>It&#8217;ll just suck all the warm air right out of the house. And I let her know. In the morning of that day, I had a Copernican shift. My heart changed. The woman has put a lot of work into making this a nice evening. If she wants a fire, make her a fire. And so I did. It wasn&#8217;t that my logic was faulty. It just wasn&#8217;t love.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>How many times have I done the same! I have given all the right reasons why this or that request was ill-timed, illogical, unreasonable&#8230; and Jesus could have done the same. He had been serving all day and night. He needed His rest&#8230; but instead, He emptied Himself and became a slave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">This is the way we may know that we are in union with him: whoever claims to abide in him ought to live just as he lived. (1 John 2:5)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You see, we don&#8217;t need to undertake great fasts and mortifications in order to find the Cross. It finds us each day in the duty of the moment, in our mundane tasks and obligations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">For this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, as you heard from the beginning, in which you should walk. (2 John 1:6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And are we not fulfilling Christ&#8217;s commandments to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the sick and imprisoned whenever we cook a meal, do the laundry, or divert our attention to the worries and <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-32660\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/caringederly-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"329\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/caringederly-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/caringederly-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/caringederly-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/caringederly-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/caringederly-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/caringederly.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/>cares that burden our family and neighbours? When we do these things with love, with no concern for our own self-interests or comfort, we become another Christ to them&#8230; and continue the renewal of the world.<\/p>\n<p>What is necessary is that we have a heart like Samuel. In today&#8217;s first reading, each time he heard his name called in the middle of the night, he leapt from his sleep and presented himself: <em>&#8220;Here I am.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Each time our families, vocations, and duties call our name, we too should leap up, like Samuel&#8230; like Jesus&#8230; and say, &#8220;Here I am. I will be Christ to you.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">Behold I come&#8230;\u00a0To do your will, O my God, is my delight,\u00a0and your law is within my heart!
