He is allowing the &#8220;cracks&#8221; in our spiritual lives to be exposed and exploited in order to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/a-jealous-god\/\">shake us<\/a>, as there is no longer any time left to sit on the fence. It is as though a gentle warning from Heaven before <em>the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/how-to-know-when-the-warning-is-near\/\">Warning<\/a>, like the illuminating light of dawn before the Sun breaks the horizon. This illumination is a <em>gift<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Heb 12:5-7: &#8216;\u201cMy son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart when reproved by him; for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.\u201d Endure your trials as \u201cdiscipline\u201d; God treats you as sons. For what \u201cson\u201d is there whom his father does not discipline?&#8217;<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> to awaken us to the great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-strong-delusion\/\">spiritual dangers<\/a> that we are facing since we have entered an epochal change \u2014 the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/when-the-weeds-begin-to-head\/\">time of harvest<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So, today I am republishing this reflection on <em>deliverance<\/em>. I encourage those of you who feel you are in a fog, oppressed, and overwhelmed by your weaknesses to recognize that you might very well be engaged in spiritual warfare with &#8220;principalities and powers.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. And so, I&#8217;ll leave you with this word from Sirach, a word of hope that even this battle is oriented toward your welfare&#8230;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">My child, when you come to serve the Lord,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">prepare yourself for trials.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Be sincere of heart and steadfast,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">and do not be impetuous in time of adversity.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Cling to him, do not leave him,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">that you may prosper in your last days.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Accept whatever happens to you;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">in periods of humiliation be patient.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">For in fire gold is tested,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">and the chosen, in the crucible of humiliation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Trust in God, and he will help you;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">make your ways straight and hope in him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/sirach\/2\">Sirach 2:1-6<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>First published February 1st, 2018&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nDO<\/strong>\u00a0you want to be free? Do you want to breathe the air of joy, peace, and that rest that Christ promised? Sometimes, part of the reason we are robbed of these graces is because we have not engaged a spiritual battle that is being waged around our souls by what the Scriptures call &#8220;unclean spirits.&#8221;\u00a0Are these spirits real beings? Do we have authority over them? How do we address them so as to be free of them? Practical answers to your questions from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/29\/our-lady-of-the-storm\/\"><i>Our\u00a0Lady of the Storm<\/i><\/a><i>&#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>REAL EVIL, REAL ANGELS<\/p>\n<p>Let us be absolutely clear: when we speak of evil spirits we are talking about fallen angels\u2014<em>real<\/em> spiritual <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-32886\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/stan.jpg\" width=\"285\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/stan.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/stan-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/>beings. They are not &#8220;symbols&#8221; or &#8220;metaphors&#8221; for evil or badness, as some misguided theologians have suggested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; color: #070357;\"><strong>Satan or the devil and the other demons are fallen angels who have freely refused to serve God and his plan. Their choice against God is definitive. They try to associate man in their revolt against God&#8230; The devil and the other demons were indeed created naturally good by God, but they became evil by their own doing.<\/strong><\/span> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,\u00a0<\/em>n. 414, 319<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I had to chuckle at a recent article that only somewhat veiled its bemusement at Pope Francis&#8217; frequent mention of the devil. Affirming the constant teaching of the Church on the personhood of Satan, Francis said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>He is evil, he\u2019s not like mist. He\u2019s not a diffuse thing, he is a person. I\u2019m convinced that one must never converse with Satan\u2014if you do that, you\u2019ll be lost.<\/strong> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, television interview; December 13th, 2017;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2017\/12\/13\/dont-argue-devil-much-intelligent-us-says-pope-francis\/\"> telegraph.co.uk<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This was chalked up as a kind of &#8220;Jesuit&#8221; thing. It&#8217;s not. It&#8217;s not even a Christian thing <em>per se.<\/em> It&#8217;s the reality of the entire human race that we are all at the center of a cosmic battle against evil principalities and powers who seek to eternally separate humans from their Creator\u2014whether we know it or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>REAL AUTHORITY<\/p>\n<p>As Christians, we have real authority, given to us by Christ, to repel these evil spirits who are intelligent, cunning, and relentless.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Mark 6:7<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Behold, I have given you the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10:19-20)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, to what degree do each of us have authority?<\/p>\n<p>Just as the Church has a hierarchy\u2014the Pope, bishops, priests, and then laity\u2014so too, the angels have a hierarchy: Cherubim, Seraphim, Archangels, etc. Likewise, this hierarchy was maintained among the fallen angels: Satan, then &#8220;principalities&#8230; powers&#8230; world rulers of this present darkness&#8230; evil spirits in <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-32887\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/angelic-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"307\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/angelic-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/angelic-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/angelic-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/angelic.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/>the heavens&#8221;, &#8220;dominions&#8221;, and so forth.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. As well, authority can vary according to <em>territory<\/em>.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">see Daniel 10:13 where there is a fallen angel who reigns over Persia<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> For instance, an exorcist I know said that his bishop would not permit him to say the Rite of Exorcism in another diocese <em>unless<\/em> he had the permission of the bishop there. Why? Because Satan is legalistic and will play that card whenever he can.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a woman shared with me how they were part of a deliverance team with a priest in Mexico. While praying over an afflicted individual, he commanded an evil spirit to &#8220;depart in the name of Jesus.&#8221; But the demon replied, &#8220;Which Jesus is that?&#8221; You see, Jesus is a common name in that country. So the exorcist, without arguing with the spirit, responded, &#8220;In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I command you to depart.&#8221; And the spirit did.<\/p>\n<p>So what authority do you have over demonic spirits?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>YOUR AUTHORITY<\/p>\n<p>As I said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/29\/our-lady-of-the-storm\/\"><em>Our Lady of the Storm<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Christians have been given the authority to bind and rebuke spirits in essentially four categories: our personal lives; as fathers, over our homes and children; as priests, over our parishes and parishioners; and as bishops, over their dioceses and when the enemy has taken possession of a soul.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is that exorcists warn that, while we have authority to cast out spirits in our personal lives, rebuking the evil one in\u00a0<em>others\u00a0<\/em>is another matter\u2014unless we have that authority.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God. (Romans 13:1)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are varying schools of thought on this, mind you. But it is pretty much unanimous in the Church&#8217;s experience that when it comes to the rare cases where a person is &#8220;possessed&#8221; by evil spirits (not just oppressed by, but inhabited by), only a bishop has the authority to either cast out or delegate that authority to an &#8220;exorcist.&#8221; This authority comes directly from Christ himself who first gave it\u00a0<em>to the Twelve Apostles,\u00a0<\/em>who then pass on this authority according to Christ&#8217;s Word through apostolic succession:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">And he appointed twelve, to be with him, and to be sent out to preach and have authority to cast out demons&#8230; Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (Mark 3:14-15;\u00a0Matthew 18:18)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The hierarchy of authority is essentially based on\u00a0<em>priestly\u00a0<\/em>authority. The Catechism teaches that every believer shares in the &#8220;priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of Christ, and have their own part to play in the mission of the whole Christian people in the Church and in the World.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,\u00a0<\/em>n. 897<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Since you are the &#8220;temple of the Holy Spirit&#8221;, every believer,\u00a0<em>sharing in the\u00a0<\/em><em>priesthood of Christ over their<\/em> <em>bodies,<\/em> has authority to bind and rebuke evil spirits who are oppressing them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Second, is the authority of the father in the &#8220;domestic church&#8221;, the family, of which he is the head.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. (Eph 5:21-23)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Fathers, you have authority to cast out demons from your home, property and family members. I have experienced this authority myself several times over the years. Using holy water, blessed by a priest, I have &#8220;felt&#8221; the presence of evil depart when sprinkled around the home while commanding any evil spirits to depart. Other times, I have been awoken in the middle of the night by a child who is suddenly writhing in stomach pain or a head ache. Of course, one assumes it may be a virus or something they ate, but other times, the Holy Spirit has imparted a word of knowledge that it&#8217;s a spiritual attack. After praying over the child, I&#8217;ve seen these sometimes violent symptoms just suddenly vanish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32891 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unbound-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unbound-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unbound-1536x1022.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unbound-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unbound-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unbound-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/unbound.jpg 1979w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Next, is the parish priest. His authority comes directly from the bishop who through the laying on of hands has conferred the sacramental priesthood upon him. The parish priest has general authority over all his parishioners within his parish territory. Through the Sacraments of Baptism and Reconciliation, the blessing of homes, and prayers of deliverance, the parish priest is a powerful instrument of binding and dispelling the presence of evil. (Again, in some cases of demonic possession or an obstinate established presence in a home through the occult or a past violent act, for example, an exorcist may be required who may use the Rite of Exorcism.)<\/p>\n<p>And last is the bishop, who has spiritual authority over his diocese. In the case of the Bishop of Rome, who is also the Vicar of Christ, the Pope enjoys supreme authority over the entire universal Church.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It must be said that God is not limited by the hierarchical structure He himself has ordained. The Lord can cast out spirits when and however He pleases. For instance, some Evangelical Christians have active ministries of deliverance that seem to fall outside the above guidelines (though in cases of possession, ironically, they often seek out a Catholic priest). But then, that&#8217;s the point: these are guidelines given to <em>guide<\/em> so as to not only maintain order, but to protect the faithful. We would do well to humbly remain beneath the protective mantle of the Church&#8217;s 2000 year old wisdom and experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HOW TO PRAY FOR DELIVERANCE<\/p>\n<p>The experience of the Church through her various apostolates of deliverance ministry would essentially agree on three basic elements necessary for the deliverance from evil spirits to remain effective.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I. REPENTANCE<\/p>\n<p><em>Sin<\/em> is what gives Satan a certain &#8220;legal&#8221; access to the Christian. The Cross is what dissolves that legal claim:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">[Jesus] brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; obliterating the bond against us, with its legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross; despoiling the principalities and the powers, he made a public spectacle of them, leading them away in triumph by it. (Col 2:13-15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, the Cross! I remember the story a Lutheran woman once told me. They were praying for a woman in their parish community who was afflicted by an evil spirit. Suddenly, the woman growled and leapt up toward the woman praying for her deliverance. Shocked and afraid, all she could think to do <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-32889\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/crucifix1-1024x803.jpg\" width=\"313\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/crucifix1-1024x803.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/crucifix1-1536x1204.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/crucifix1-300x235.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/crucifix1-768x602.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/crucifix1.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/>in that moment was make the &#8220;sign of the cross&#8221; in the air\u2014something she once saw a Catholic do. When she did, the possessed woman flew backwards. <em>The Cross is the symbol of Satan&#8217;s defeat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But if we willfully choose not only to sin, but to adore the idols of our appetites, no matter how small, we are handing ourselves over in degrees, so to speak, to the influence of the devil (oppression). In the case of grave sin, unforgiveness, loss of faith, or involvement in the occult, a person may be \u00a0permitting the evil one a stronghold (obsession). Depending upon the nature of the sin and the soul&#8217;s disposition or other serious factors, this can result in evil spirits actually inhabiting the person (possession).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What the soul must do, through a thorough examination of conscience, is sincerely repent of all participation in the works of darkness. This dissolves the legal claim Satan has on the soul\u2014and why one exorcist said to me that &#8220;One good confession is more powerful than one hundred exorcisms.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>II. RENOUNCE<\/p>\n<p>True repentance also means renouncing our former deeds and way of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world&#8230; (Titus 2:11-12)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When you recognize sins or patterns in your life that are contrary to the Gospel, it is good practice to say aloud, for example: &#8220;In the name of Jesus Christ, I renounce having used Tarot cards and seeking out fortune tellers&#8221;, or &#8220;I renounce lust,&#8221; or &#8220;I renounce anger&#8221;, or &#8220;I renounce the abuse of alcohol&#8221;, or &#8220;I renounce watching horror films in my home and playing violent video games&#8221;, or &#8220;I renounce heavy death metal music,&#8221; etc. This declaration puts the spirits behind these activities on notice. And then&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>III. REBUKE<\/p>\n<p>If this is a sin in your personal life, then you have the authority to bind and rebuke (cast out) the demon behind that temptation. You can simply say:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>In the name of Jesus Christ, I bind the spirit of _________ and command you to depart.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-32890\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/reabuking2-583x1024.jpg\" width=\"292\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/reabuking2-583x1024.jpg 583w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/reabuking2-171x300.jpg 171w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/reabuking2-768x1350.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/reabuking2.jpg 833w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/>Here, you can name the spirit: &#8220;spirit of the Occult&#8221;, &#8220;Lust&#8221; , &#8220;Anger&#8221;, &#8220;Alcoholism&#8221;, &#8220;Curiosity&#8221;, &#8220;Violence&#8221;, or what have you. Another prayer that I use is similar:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>In the name of Jesus\u00a0Christ of Nazareth, I bind the spirit <em>of _________ with the chain of Mary to the foot of the Cross. I command you to depart and forbid you to return.<\/em><\/i><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know the name of the spirit(s), you can also pray:<\/p>\n<p><em>In the Name of Jesus Christ, I take authority over each and every spirit coming against_________\u00a0and I bind them and command them to depart.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And then Jesus tells us this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">When an unclean spirit goes out of a person it roams through arid regions searching for rest but finds none. Then it says, \u2018I will return to my home from which I came.\u2019 But upon returning, it finds it empty, swept clean, and put in order. Then it goes and brings back with itself seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they move in and dwell there; and the last condition of that person is worse than the first. (Matt 12:43-45)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That is to say, if we do not repent; if we return to old patterns, habits, and temptations, then the evil one will simply and legally reclaim what it has temporarily lost to the degree that we leave the door open. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One priest in deliverance ministry taught me that, after rebuking evil spirits, one can pray: <em>&#8220;Lord, come now and fill the empty places in my heart with your Spirit and presence. Come Lord Jesus with your angels and close the gaps in my life.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The above prayers while intended for individual use can be adapted by those who have authority over others, while the Rite of Exorcism is reserved to bishops and those whom he grants authority to use it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BE NOT AFRAID!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis is right: don&#8217;t argue with Satan. Jesus never argued with evil spirits or debated with Satan. Rather, He simply rebuked them or quoted the Scriptures\u2014which is the Word of God. And God&#8217;s Word is power itself, because Jesus is <em>&#8220;the Word made flesh.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_32880_1('footnote_plugin_reference_32880_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">John 1:14<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_32880_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_32880_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to jump up and down and scream at the devil, no more than a judge, when passing a sentence over a criminal, stands up and shouts while flailing his arms. Rather, the judge simply stands on his <em>authority<\/em> and calmly delivers the sentence. So too, stand on your authority as a baptized son or daughter <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-32892\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/freedomfound-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"343\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/freedomfound-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/freedomfound-1536x1229.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/freedomfound-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/freedomfound-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/freedomfound.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/>of God, and deliver the sentence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Let the faithful rejoice in their glory,\u00a0cry out for joy on their couches, with the praise of God in their mouths,\u00a0and a two-edged sword in their hands&#8230; to bind their kings in shackles,\u00a0their nobles in chains of iron, to execute the judgments decreed for them\u2014such is the glory of all God\u2019s faithful.\u00a0Hallelujah! (Psalm 149:5-9)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There is more that could be said here, such as the power of praise, which fills demons with disgust and terror; the necessity of prayer and fasting when spirits have deep strongholds; and as I wrote in\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/29\/our-lady-of-the-storm\/\">Our Lady of the Storm<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>the powerful effect of the Blessed Mother through her presence and her Rosary, when she is invited into the believer&#8217;s midst.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing is that you have a real and personal relationship with Jesus, a consistent prayer life, regular participation in the Sacraments, and are striving to be faithful and obedient to the Lord. Otherwise, there will be chinks in your armour and serious vulnerabilities in the battle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line is that you, Christian, are victorious through faith in Jesus and His Holy Name.
