But what happened this week in New York pushed new boundaries even for this generation.<!--more-->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was a gala event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art&#8217;s Costume Institute, with this year&#8217;s theme titled: &#8216;Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.&#8217; On display would be several centuries of Catholic &#8220;fashion.&#8221; The Vatican had lent some vestments and garments for display. The Cardinal of New York would be in attendance. It was to be an opportunity, in his words, to reflect &#8220;the &#8216;Catholic imagination,&#8217; [for] the truth, goodness, and beauty of God is reflected all over\u2026 even in fashion. The world is shot through with His glory.'&#8221; <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_34193_1('footnote_plugin_reference_34193_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_34193_1('footnote_plugin_reference_34193_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_34193_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_34193_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardinaldolan.org\/index.php\/heavenly-bodies-fashion-and-the-catholic-imagination\/\">cardinaldolan.org<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_34193_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_34193_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But what happened that evening was neither part of the &#8220;Catholic imagination&#8221; as we know it, nor was it a reflection of &#8220;truth, goodness, and beauty&#8221; as the Catechism intended. Celebrities\u2014many like Rhianna or Madonna, known for their open mockery of Christianity\u2014<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-34195\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/notthemadonna.jpg\" width=\"318\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/notthemadonna.jpg 962w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/notthemadonna-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/notthemadonna-768x568.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/>donned imitation monastic robes, bishop-like vestments, and other religious-type garments often altered in the most <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5703953\/PIERS-MORGAN-Met-Islam-Jewish-themed-hell-break-loose-disrespect-religion.html\">seductive manner<\/a>. Victoria&#8217;s Secret model, Stella Maxwell, wore images of the Virgin Mary all over her strapless gown. Others wore high-cut dresses with the Cross emblazoned across their hips or breasts. Others appeared as a gawdy &#8220;Jesus&#8221; or immodest &#8220;Mary.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Cardinal Dolan defended the evening, and Bishop Barron defended Cardinal Dolan, British commentator Piers Morgan spoke for many Catholics:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>There is a massive difference between seeing religious artifacts tastefully and respectfully laid out in a museum, and seeing them stuck on some flesh-flaunting celebrity&#8217;s head at a party&#8230;\u00a0A lot of the imagery was highly sexualised, which you might think not just inappropriate for a religious theme but also incredibly offensive to the many victims of sex abuse in the Catholic Church.<\/strong> \u2014May 8th, 2018;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-5703953\/PIERS-MORGAN-Met-Islam-Jewish-themed-hell-break-loose-disrespect-religion.html\">dailymail.co.uk<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But Catholics don&#8217;t need Mr. Morgan to tell them this is inappropriate. St. Paul did that long ago:<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-34226\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/thillcardinal.jpg\" width=\"267\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/thillcardinal.jpg 634w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/thillcardinal-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">For what partnership do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?&#8230; &#8220;Therefore, come forth from them\u00a0and be separate,&#8221; says the Lord, &#8220;and touch nothing unclean;\u00a0then I will receive you\u00a0and I will be a father to you,\u00a0and you shall be sons and daughters to me,\u00a0says the Lord Almighty.&#8221; 1 Cor 6:14-18<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If this event was about &#8220;truth, beauty, and goodness,&#8221; the question must be asked: how many men there found the &#8220;truth,&#8221; or did they rather find tight dresses? How many men were captivated by &#8220;beauty&#8221; or, rather, bulging breasts? How many were led to a deeper &#8220;goodness,&#8221; or simply, to gawking?\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">Avert your eyes from a shapely woman; do not gaze upon beauty that is not yours; through woman\u2019s beauty many have been ruined, for love of it burns like fire\u2026 I will not set before my eyes anything that is base.\u00a0(Sirach 9:8; Ps 101:3)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pope Francis has indeed been encouraging Christians to &#8220;accompany&#8221; others, to be present to others, to take on the &#8220;smell of the sheep&#8221;, so to speak. We can&#8217;t evangelize behind a wall. But as Paul VI wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>There is no true evangelization if the name, the teaching, the life, the promises, the kingdom and the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, are not proclaimed.<\/strong> \u2014POPE PAUL VI,\u00a0<em>Evangelii Nuntiandi<\/em>, n. 22;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/hf_p-vi_exh_19751208_evangelii-nuntiandi.html\">vatican.va<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Catholic Church&#8217;s participation in the gala begs the question: should we accompany others into the &#8220;near occasion of sin&#8221;? Shouldn&#8217;t our message and presentation of &#8220;truth, beauty, and<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34199 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/blackmadonnagala-680x1024.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/blackmadonnagala-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/blackmadonnagala-1020x1536.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/blackmadonnagala-1360x2048.jpg 1360w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/blackmadonnagala-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/blackmadonnagala-768x1156.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/blackmadonnagala.jpg 1470w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/>\u00a0goodness&#8221; be a reflection of the Creator, and not of that fallen angel? And shouldn&#8217;t our witness appear to be a &#8220;sign of contradiction&#8221; \u2014 not compromise with the world? \u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>&#8230;the Church fulfils her mission to the extent that, in union with Christ, she accomplishes every one of her works in spiritual and practical imitation of the love of her Lord.<\/strong> \u2014BENEDICT XVI, Homily for the Opening of the Fifth General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops, May 13th, 2007; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/benedict_xvi\/homilies\/2007\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_hom_20070513_conference-brazil_en.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>How did God love us? The Good Shepherd came to lead us to green and life-giving pastures, not skanky sloughs. He came to deliver us from sin, not enable it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Although it sounds obvious, spiritual accompaniment must lead others ever closer to God, in whom we attain true freedom. Some people think they are free if they can avoid God; they fail to see that they remain existentially orphaned, helpless, homeless. They cease being pilgrims and become drifters, flitting around themselves and never getting anywhere. To accompany them would be counterproductive if it became a sort of therapy supporting their self-absorption and ceased to be a pilgrimage with Christ to the Father.<\/strong> \u2014POPE FRANCIS,<a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html\">\u00a0<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html\">Evangelii Gaudium<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>n. 170<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, were the celebrities there being moved &#8220;ever closer to God?&#8221;\u00a0Perhaps<i>\u00a0<\/i>actress\u00a0Anne Hathaway, wearing a &#8220;voluminous cardinal red gown,&#8221; summarized the evening well; when someone on the red carpet shouted, \u201cYou look like an angel,\u201d she snapped back \u201cActually, I\u2019m feeling quite devilish.\u201d <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_34193_1('footnote_plugin_reference_34193_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_34193_1('footnote_plugin_reference_34193_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_34193_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_34193_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cruxnow.com\/vatican-at-the-met\/2018\/05\/08\/for-some-celebs-catholic-themed-red-carpet-was-a-homecoming\/\">cruxnow.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_34193_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_34193_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>As Christians, we have such an incredible opportunity to shine at this time when the <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34219 alignright\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/834DD054-400B-470E-A317-D423A75BF335.png\" width=\"230\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/834DD054-400B-470E-A317-D423A75BF335.png 355w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/834DD054-400B-470E-A317-D423A75BF335-223x300.png 223w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>world is sleep-walking in darkness. How? We can reveal to others the &#8220;truth&#8221; by rejecting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/28\/political-correctness-and-the-great-apostasy\/\">political correctness.<\/a> We can reveal &#8220;beauty&#8221; through speech, music, art, and creativity that<em> builds up<\/em> rather than indignifies; and we can reveal &#8220;goodness&#8221; by carrying ourselves with modesty, kindness, gentleness, and patience, all the while refusing to co-operate in the works of darkness. This is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/25\/the-counter-revolution\/\"><em>Counter-Revolution<\/em><\/a> we are called to&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like lights in the world. (Philippians 2:15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A FOOTNOTE AND A WARNING<\/p>\n<p>The evangelistic vision of Pope Francis is that we would imitate Christ; that we would seek out the lost and &#8220;attract&#8221; them to the Gospel with the love of Christ.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>&#8230;He gives love. And this love seeks you and waits for you, you who at this moment do not believe or are far away. And this is the love of God.<\/strong> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, Angelus, St. Peter\u2019s Square, January 6th, 2014; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indcatholicnews.com\/news.php?viewStory=23900\">Independent Catholic News<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But if we are not showing others <em>another<\/em> &#8220;way,&#8221; if we are not speaking the unchanging &#8220;truth,&#8221; and if we are not both offering and reflecting within ourselves the only &#8220;life,&#8221; then what are we doing?\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">As we were judged worthy by God to be entrusted with the gospel, that is how we speak, not as trying to please human beings, but rather God, who judges our hearts. (1 Thessalonians 2:4)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The &#8220;life&#8221; I speak of here is most especially the Eucharistic life of Jesus. This is why this gala has cut so many of us to the heart.\u00a0The vestments of the Catholic priesthood are not just a lovely custom. They are a reflection of Jesus Christ, our High Priest, who offers <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-34200\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/massvestement.jpg\" width=\"266\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/massvestement.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/massvestement-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/>Himself to us as both Victim and priest in the Holy Mass. The vestments are a sign of Christ Himself <em>in personi\u00a0<\/em>and that authority which He gave to the Apostles and their successors to <em>&#8220;do this in memory of Me.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0To sexualize the vestments and religious attire, then, is a sacrilege. Because\u2014and here is the irony of it all\u2014they are a prophetic witness to a\u00a0<em>renunciation<\/em> of the world for a higher good: betrothal and union with God. And as Mr. Morgan said, it is especially grievous at a time when the sexual sins of priests throughout the world have wounded so many.<\/p>\n<p>This news story was particularly striking to me when it broke that evening. Because earlier in the day, I had been reflecting on a passage in the Book of Revelation that I believe describes the state of America today, that of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2015\/12\/20\/mystery-babylon\/\">Mystery Babylon&#8221;:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace; font-size: 10pt;\">Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great. She has become a haunt for demons. She is a cage for every unclean spirit, a cage for every unclean bird, a cage for every unclean and disgusting beast. For all the nations have drunk the wine of her licentious passion. The kings of the earth had intercourse with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her drive for luxury. (Rev 18:3)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>St. John continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Then I heard another voice from heaven say:\u00a0\u201cDepart from her, my people,\u00a0so as not to take part in her sins\u00a0and receive a share in her plagues,\u00a0for her sins are piled up to the sky,\u00a0and God remembers her crimes.&#8221;
