Even the dark Roman night couldn&#8217;t fool my body. Jet lag wins again.<!--more-->\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>The first bit of news I read this morning left my jaw on the floor due to its timing. Last week, I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/01\/the-new-beast-rising\/\">Communism vs. Capitalism<\/a>,<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_35074_1('footnote_plugin_reference_35074_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_35074_1('footnote_plugin_reference_35074_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_35074_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_35074_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/01\/the-new-beast-rising\/\"><em>The New Beast Rising<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_35074_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_35074_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0and how the Church&#8217;s social doctrine is <em>the<\/em>\u00a0<em>answer\u00a0<\/em>to a proper economic vision for the nations that puts people before profit. So I was pretty excited to hear that, as I was landing in Rome yesterday, the Pope was preaching on this very subject, putting the Church&#8217;s social doctrine in the most accessible terms. Here is but one tidbit (the whole address can be read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zenit.org\/articles\/general-audience-on-the-7th-commandment-thou-shall-not-steal-full-text\/\"><em>here <\/em><\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/zenit.org\/articles\/general-audience-pope-7th-commandment-reminds-us-creations-goods-are-meant-for-whole-human-race\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If there is hunger on earth, it\u2019s not because there is a lack of food! Rather, because of the demands of the market, sometimes it is destroyed; it\u2019s thrown away. What is lacking is a free and farsighted entrepreneurship, which ensures adequate production, and solidary planning, which ensures an equitable distribution. The Catechism says again: \u201cIn his use of things man should regard the external goods he legitimately owns not merely as exclusive to himself but common to others also, in the sense that they can benefit others as well as himself\u201d (n. 2404). All wealth, to be good, must have a social dimension&#8230;\u00a0the true meaning and purpose of all wealth: it stands at the service of love, freedom and\u00a0human\u00a0dignity.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> \u2014General Audience, November 7th, <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 10pt;\" href=\"https:\/\/zenit.org\/articles\/general-audience-on-the-7th-commandment-thou-shall-not-steal-full-text\/\">Zenit.org<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>After breakfast, I walked to St. Peter&#8217;s Square hoping to attend Mass and make a confession. The lineups into the basilica were huge though\u2014crawling. I had to pull the plug as we had a tour of St. John Lateran (the &#8220;Pope&#8217;s church&#8221;) starting in a couple of hours, and I wouldn&#8217;t make that if I stayed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So I took a walk along the shopping area near the Vatican. Thousands of tourists meandered past designer name stores as honking traffic whizzed by on crowded streets. Who says the Roman Empire is dead? It only has a facelift. Instead of armies, we have been conquered by consumerism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s first Mass reading: <em>&#8220;I even consider everything as a loss\u00a0because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.&#8221;<\/em> How the Church needs to live these words of St. Paul.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-35076\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/arches-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"343\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/arches-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/arches-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/arches-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/arches.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/>A small group of us who are attending the ecumenical conference this weekend piled into taxis and headed off to St. <br \/>\nJohn Lateran. Tonight is the vigil of the Feast of that basilica&#8217;s dedication. Only a couple of hundred yards away is the ancient wall and main archways that St. Paul passed through on foot 2000 years ago. I love Paul, my favorite biblical writer. To be standing on the ground that he walked is hard to process.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the church, we passed by the reliquaries of St&#8217;s Peter and Paul where fragments of their skulls have been preserved for<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-35077\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/chairpeterlateran-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/chairpeterlateran-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/chairpeterlateran-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/chairpeterlateran.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/> veneration. And then we came to the &#8220;chair of Peter&#8221;, the seat of authority of the Bishop of Rome who is also the chief shepherd over the Universal Church, the Pope. Here, I am reminded once again that\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/05\/the-papacy-is-not-one-pope\/\">The Papacy is not One Pope<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The office of Peter, created by Christ, remains the rock of the Church. It will be so until the end of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>Spent the rest of the evening with Catholic apologist, Tim Staples. Last time we saw each other, our hair was still brown. We talked about aging and how we have to always be prepared to meet the Lord, especially now that we&#8217;re in our fifties. How the words of St. Peter ring true the older one gets:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">All flesh is like grass\u00a0and all its glory like the flower of grass.\u00a0The grass withers, and the flower falls,\u00a0but the word of the Lord abides for ever. (1 Pet 1:24-25)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>We entered the Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Here is where Emperor Constantine I&#8217;s mother, St. Helena, <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-35078\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/nailcroce.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/nailcroce.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/nailcroce-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/>brought the relics of the Passion of Lord from the Holy Land. Two thorns from Christ&#8217;s crown, a nail that pierced Him, the wood of the Cross and even the placard that Pilate hung upon it, are preserved here. As we approached the relics, a sense of overwhelming gratitude came upon us. &#8220;Because of our sins,&#8221; Tim whispered.\u00a0<i>&#8220;Jesus have mercy,&#8221;\u00a0<\/i>I replied. The need to kneel overcame us. A few feet behind me, an elderly woman quietly wept.<\/p>\n<p>Just this morning, I felt led to read the epistle of St. John:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins. (1 John 4:10)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thank you Jesus for loving us, always.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>Over supper, Tim and I talked a lot about Pope Francis. We shared the scars we both have from having defended the papacy against the very public and often inappropriate attacks upon the Vicar of Christ, and thus, upon the unity of the Church herself. It&#8217;s not that the Pope has not made mistakes\u2014it is his office that is Divine, not the man himself. But it is precisely because of this that frequently rash and unfounded judgments against Francis are out of place, as much as undressing one&#8217;s own father in the public square would be as well. Tim referenced Pope Boniface VIII, who wrote in the fourteenth century:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Therefore, if the terrestrial power err, it will be judged by the spiritual power; but if a minor spiritual power err, it will be judged by a superior spiritual power; but if the highest power of all err, it can be judged only by God, and not by man&#8230;\u00a0Therefore whoever resists this power thus ordained by God, resists the ordinance of God [Rom 13:2].<\/strong> \u2014<em>Unam Sanctam,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.papalencyclicals.net\/Bon08\/B8unam.htm\">papalencyclicals.net<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>Back at my hotel this evening, I read today&#8217;s homily at Santa Casta Marta. The Pope must have been anticipating my conversation with Tim:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Bearing witness has never been comfortable in history&#8230; for witnesses \u2014 they often pay with martyrdom&#8230; To witness is to break a habit, a way of being&#8230; to break, to change&#8230; what attracts is the testimony, not only the words&#8230;<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Francis adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Instead of \u201ctrying to resolve a situation of conflict, we murmur in secret, always in a low voice, because we don\u2019t have the courage to speak clearly&#8230;&#8221;
