The Catechism rightly states that &#8220;men of both sides were to blame.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_35086_1('footnote_plugin_reference_35086_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_35086_1('footnote_plugin_reference_35086_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_35086_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_35086_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.\u00a0<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,<\/em>n. 817<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_35086_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_35086_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> So humility\u2014great humility\u2014is necessary as we seek to heal the breach between us. The first step is in acknowledging that we <em>are<\/em> brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>&#8230;one cannot charge with the sin of the separation those who at present are born into these communities [that resulted from such separation] and in them are brought up in the faith of Christ, and the Catholic Church accepts them with respect and affection as brothers&#8230;. All who have been justified by faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ; they therefore have a right to be called Christians, and with good reason are accepted as brothers in the Lord by the children of the Catholic Church.<\/strong><\/span> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,<\/em>n. 818<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And then the Catechism makes a crucial point:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>&#8220;Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth&#8221;\u00a0are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: &#8220;the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.&#8221;\u00a0Christ&#8217;s Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him,\u00a0and are in themselves calls to &#8220;Catholic unity.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span> \u2014Ibid. n. 819<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, the saying \u201c<em>extra ecclesiam nulla salus<\/em>,\u201d or, \u201coutside the Church there is no salvation\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_35086_1('footnote_plugin_reference_35086_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_35086_1('footnote_plugin_reference_35086_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_35086_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_35086_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. St. Cyprian, <i>Ep.<\/i> 73.21:PL 3,1169; <i>De unit.<\/i>:PL 4,50-536<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_35086_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_35086_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> remains true since &#8220;the power&#8221; for these separated communities &#8220;derives from the fullness of grace and truth&#8221; in the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is for us. (Mark 9:39-40)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>Returning now to that &#8220;word&#8221;:\u00a0<em>My people have divided Me.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus declared Himself in this way:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Even though the Catholic Church contains the &#8220;fullness of grace and truth,&#8221; she has become impoverished through <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-35090\" style=\"margin: 2px 4px 2px 4px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/desertfater.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"343\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/desertfater.jpg 695w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/desertfater-300x258.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/>the schisms that have torn her bosom. If we think of the Roman Catholic Church as &#8220;the truth&#8221;, then perhaps one could think of the Orthodox, who split away at the turn of the first millennium, as emphasizing &#8220;the way.&#8221; For it is in the Eastern Church that the great monastic traditions sprouted from the desert fathers teaching us &#8220;the way&#8221; to God through an &#8220;interior life.&#8221; Their profound evangelization and example of a mystical life of prayer is a direct counter to the modernism and rationalism that have possessed and shipwrecked vast portions of the Western Church. It is for this reason that St. John Paul II declared:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>&#8230;the Church must breathe with her two lungs! In the first millennium of the history of Christianity, this expression refers primarily to the relationship between Byzantium and Rome<\/strong>. \u2014Ut Unum Sint, n. 54, May 25th, 1995; <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_25051995_ut-unum-sint.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On the other hand, perhaps we can see the later Protestant split as a certain loss of &#8220;the life&#8221; of the Church. For it is often in &#8220;evangelical&#8221; communities where &#8220;the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-35091\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/filledwithspirt-1024x820.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/filledwithspirt-1024x820.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/filledwithspirt-1536x1230.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/filledwithspirt-2048x1641.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/filledwithspirt-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/filledwithspirt-768x615.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 357px) 100vw, 357px\" \/> the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit&#8221; are emphasized most. These are the &#8220;breath&#8221; that fills the lungs of the Church, which is why so many Catholics have fled the pews after encountering the power of the Holy Spirit in these other communities. It was there that they encountered Jesus &#8220;personally&#8221;, were filled with the Holy Spirit in a new way, and set on fire with a new hunger for God&#8217;s Word. This is why St. John Paul II stressed that the &#8220;new evangelization&#8221; cannot be a mere intellectual exercise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>As you well know it is not a matter of merely passing on a doctrine, but rather of a personal and profound meeting with the Saviour.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II, <em>Commissioning Families, Neo-Catechumenal Way<\/em>. 1991<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, let us be honest:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Sometimes even Catholics have lost or never had the chance to experience Christ personally: not Christ as a mere \u2018paradigm\u2019 or \u2018value\u2019, but as the living Lord, \u2018the way, and the truth, and the life\u2019<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u2014POPE ST .JOHN PAUL II, <em>L\u2019Osservatore Romano (English Edition of the Vatican Newspaper), <\/em>March 24, 1993, p.3.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cue Billy Graham\u2014and John Paul II:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Conversion means accepting, by a personal decision, the saving sovereignty of Christ and becoming his disciple.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II, <em>Encyclical Letter: Mission of the Redeemer<\/em> (1990) 46<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I truly believe we will see a &#8220;new springtime&#8221; of faith in the Church, but only when she has integrated the &#8220;fragmented Christ&#8221; and become wholly again an authentic representation of He who is &#8220;the way and the truth and the life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022\u2022<\/p>\n<p>Brother, Tim Staples, gave a great talk on how the Pope is the &#8220;perpetual&#8221; sign of the Church&#8217;s unity.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>The\u00a0<i>Pope<\/i>, Bishop of Rome and Peter&#8217;s successor, &#8220;is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span>\u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,<\/em>n. 882<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems to me, then, that there is another &#8220;perpetual&#8221; constituent of the Church&#8217;s unity and that is the Mother of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary. For&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Holy Mary&#8230;became the image of the Church to come\u2026<\/strong> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, <em>Spe Salvi,<\/em> n.50<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As our Mother, given to us beneath the Cross, she is in continual &#8220;birth pangs&#8221; as she labors to give birth to the Church, the mystical &#8220;body of Christ.&#8221; This is reflected in the Church who brings these souls to birth through the womb of the baptismal font. Because the Blessed Mother is in eternity, her maternal intercession is thus perpetual.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong> If as \u201cfull of grace\u201d she has been eternally present in the mystery of Christ&#8230; she made present to humanity the mystery of Christ. And she still continues to do so. Through the mystery of Christ, she too is present within mankind.
