Sadly, even many &#8220;Christians&#8221; are adopting this fallacious ethos. What is needed, more than ever, is a bold, charitable, and powerful proclamation of the Gospel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/what-a-beautiful-name-it-is\/\">the name of Jesus<\/a>. This is the duty and privilege most especially of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/our-ladys-little-rabble\/\">Our Lady&#8217;s Little Rabble<\/a>. Who else is there?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First published March 15th, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>THERE<\/strong> are no words that can adequately describe what it&#8217;s like to walk in the literal footsteps of Jesus. It&#8217;s as though my trip to the Holy Land was entering into a\u00a0mythical realm that I&#8217;d read about all my life&#8230; and then, suddenly, there I was. Except,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/29\/jesus-the-myth\/\">Jesus is no myth<\/a>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Several moments touched me deeply, such as rising before dawn and praying in quiet and solitude by the Sea of Galilee.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. (Mark 1:35)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another was reading the Gospel of Luke in the very synagogue where Jesus first proclaimed it:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. (Luke 4:18-19)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That was a defining moment. I felt a tremendous sense of\u00a0<em>boldness\u00a0<\/em>welling up within. The\u00a0<em>now word\u00a0<\/em>that came to me is that the Church must rise up with courage (again) to preach the undiluted Gospel without fear or compromise, in season or out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>WHAT&#8217;S IT ALL FOR?<\/p>\n<p>That brought me to another, much less edifying, but no less mobilizing moment. In his homily, a priest who resides in Jerusalem\u00a0stated, &#8220;We don&#8217;t need to convert the Muslims, Jews, or others. Convert yourself and let God convert them.&#8221; I sat there a bit stunned at first. Then the words of St. Paul flooded my mind:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, \u201cHow beautiful are the feet of those who bring [the] good news!\u201d (Rom 10:14-15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-36061\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/religionsjerus-830x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/religionsjerus-830x1024.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/religionsjerus-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/religionsjerus-768x948.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/religionsjerus.jpg 1078w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>I thought to myself,\u00a0<em>If we don&#8217;t need to &#8220;convert&#8221; non-believers, then why did Jesus suffer and die? What did Jesus walk these lands for if not to call the lost to conversion? Why does the Church exist other than to continue the mission of Jesus: to bring glad tidings to the poor and proclaim liberty to captives?<\/em>\u00a0Yes, I found that moment incredibly mobilizing. &#8220;No Jesus, you did not die in vain! You did not come to placate us but save us from our sin! Lord, I won&#8217;t let your mission die in me. I won&#8217;t let a false peace supplant the true peace you came to bring!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scripture says it is <em>&#8220;by grace you have been saved through faith.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Eph 2:8<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> But&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">&#8230;faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and all manner of non-believers need to <em>hear<\/em> the Gospel of Christ in order that they, too, may have the opportunity to receive the gift of faith. But there is growing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/28\/political-correctness-and-the-great-apostasy\/\">politically correct<\/a> notion that we are simply called to &#8220;live in peace&#8221; and &#8220;tolerance,&#8221; and the idea that other religions are equally valid paths to the same God. But this is misleading at best. Jesus Christ revealed that He is <em>&#8220;the way, and the truth, and the life&#8221;<\/em> and that <em>&#8220;no one comes to the Father except through&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>Him. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">John 14:6<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> St. Paul wrote that we should indeed <em>&#8220;Strive for peace with everyone,&#8221;<\/em> but then he immediately adds: <em>&#8220;See to it that no one be deprived of the grace of God.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Heb 12:14-15<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Peace enables dialogue; but dialogue <em>must<\/em> lead to proclamation of the Good News.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>The Church respects and esteems these non Christian religions because they are the living expression of the soul of vast groups of people. They carry within them the echo of thousands of years of searching for God, a quest which is incomplete but often made with great sincerity and righteousness of heart. They possess an impressive <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-36065\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ppvi-1024x998.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ppvi.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ppvi-300x292.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ppvi-768x749.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">patrimony of deeply religious texts. They have taught generations of people how to pray. They are all impregnated with innumerable &#8220;seeds of the Word&#8221; and can constitute a true &#8220;preparation for the Gospel,&#8221;&#8230; [But] neither respect and esteem for these religions nor the complexity of the questions raised is an invitation to the Church to withhold from these non-Christians the proclamation of Jesus Christ. On the contrary the Church holds that these multitudes have the right to know the riches of the mystery of Christ\u2014riches in which we believe that the whole of humanity can find, in unsuspected fullness, everything that it is gropingly searching for concerning God, man and his destiny, life and death, and truth.<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> \u2014POPE ST. PAUL VI,\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Evangelii Nuntiandi,\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">n. 53; <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 10pt;\" href=\"https:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/hf_p-vi_exh_19751208_evangelii-nuntiandi.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Or, dear friend, is <em>&#8216;the peace of God that surpasses all understanding&#8217;<\/em> (Phil 4:7) reserved for us Christians alone? Is the tremendous healing that comes from\u00a0<em>knowing\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>hearing\u00a0<\/em>that one is forgiven in Confession meant for just a few? Is the comforting and spiritually nourishing Bread of Life, or the power of the Holy Spirit to liberate and transform, or the life-giving commandments and teachings of Christ something we keep to ourselves so as not to &#8220;offend&#8221;? Do you see how selfish this kind of thinking ultimately is? Others have a\u00a0<em>right\u00a0<\/em>to hear the Gospel since Christ <em>&#8220;wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">1 Timothy 2:4<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>All of them have a right to receive the Gospel. Christians have the duty to proclaim the Gospel without excluding anyone.<\/b> \u2014POPE FRANCIS, <i>Evangelii Gaudium<\/i>, n.15<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>PROPOSE, NOT IMPOSE<\/p>\n<p>One must carefully distinguish between <em>imposing<\/em> and\u00a0<em>proposing<\/em> the Gospel of Jesus Christ\u2014between &#8220;proselytism&#8221; <em>versus<\/em> &#8220;evangelism.&#8221; In its <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20071203_nota-evangelizzazione_en.html#_ftn49\">Doctrinal Note on Some Apsects of Evangelization<\/a><\/em>, the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith clarified that the term \u201cproselytize\u201d no longer simply refers to \u201cmissionary activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>More recently\u2026 the term has taken on a negative connotation, to mean the promotion of a religion by using means, and for motives, contrary to the spirit of the Gospel; that is, which do not safeguard the freedom and dignity of the human person.<\/strong> \u2014cf. footnote n. 49<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For example, proselytism would refer to the imperialism practiced by certain nations and even some churchmen that imposed the Gospel upon other cultures and <img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-36063 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/jpiimeeting-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/jpiimeeting-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/jpiimeeting-1536x1229.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/jpiimeeting-2048x1638.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/jpiimeeting-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/jpiimeeting-768x614.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/>peoples. But Jesus\u00a0never coerced; He only invited.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>The Lord does not proselytize; He gives love. And this love seeks you and waits for you, you who at this moment do not believe or are far away.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014POPE FRANCIS, Angelus, St. Peter\u2019s Square, January 6th, 2014; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indcatholicnews.com\/news.php?viewStory=23900\">Independent Catholic News<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>The Church does not engage in proselytism. Instead, she grows <i>by \u201cattraction\u201d&#8230;\u00a0<\/i><\/strong>\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, Homily for the Opening of the Fifth General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops, May 13th, 2007; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/benedict_xvi\/homilies\/2007\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_hom_20070513_conference-brazil_en.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>It would certainly be an error to impose something on the consciences of our brethren. But to propose to their consciences the truth of the Gospel and salvation in Jesus Christ, with complete clarity and with a total respect for the free options which it presents&#8230; far from being an attack on religious liberty is fully to respect that liberty&#8230; Why should only falsehood and error, debasement and pornography have the right to be put before people and often, unfortunately, imposed on them by the destructive propaganda of the mass media&#8230;? The respectful presentation of Christ and His kingdom is more than the evangelizer&#8217;s right; it is his duty.<\/strong> \u2014POPE ST. PAUL VI,\u00a0<em>Evangelii Nuntiandi,\u00a0<\/em>n. 80; <a href=\"https:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/hf_p-vi_exh_19751208_evangelii-nuntiandi.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The reverse side of the coin is a kind of religious indifferentism that makes &#8220;peace&#8221; and &#8220;co-existence&#8221; ends unto themselves. While living in peace is helpful and desirable, it is not always possible for the Christian whose duty it is to make known the path to eternal salvation. As Jesus said, <em>&#8220;Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword.&#8221;<\/em> <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_36052_1('footnote_plugin_reference_36052_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Matt 10:34<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_36052_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_36052_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, we owe a whole lot of martyrs an apology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8230;it is not enough that the Christian people be present and be organized in a given nation, nor is it enough to carry out an apostolate by way of good example. They are organized for this purpose, they are present for this:\u00a0<em>to announce Christ to their non-Christian fellow-citizens by word and example, and to aid them toward the full reception of Christ.<\/em><\/strong> \u2014Second Vatican Council,\u00a0<em>Ad Gentes,\u00a0<\/em>n. 15; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_decree_19651207_ad-gentes_en.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THE WORD MUST BE <em>SPOKEN<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve probably heard the catchy phrase attributed to St. Francis, &#8220;Preach the Gospel at all times and, if necessary, use words.&#8221; In fact, there is no documented proof that St. Francis ever said such a thing. However, there is plenty of evidence that these words have been used to excuse oneself from preaching the name and message of Jesus Christ. Sure, almost anyone will embrace\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-36069 gr-progress\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/peterdenier2-555x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/peterdenier2-555x1024.jpg 555w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/peterdenier2-832x1536.jpg 832w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/peterdenier2-162x300.jpg 162w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/peterdenier2-768x1418.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/peterdenier2.jpg 893w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/>our kindness and service, our volunteerism and social justice. These are necessary and, in fact, make us credible witnesses of the Gospel. The Good News proclaimed by the witness of life sooner or later has to be proclaimed by the word of life. There is no true evangelization if the name, the teaching, the life, the promises, the kingdom and the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God are not proclaimed.<\/strong> \u2014POPE ST.
