How should we respond?<\/p>\n<p>As I described in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/a-great-shipwreck\/\">The Great Shipwreck?,<\/a> <\/em>the main issue at hand is Pope Francis&#8217; comments in a new documentary (according to the English subtitle):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They\u2019re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.\u00a0What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/pope-francis-calls-for-civil-union-law-for-same-sex-couples-in-shift-from-vatican-stance-12462\">Catholic News Agency<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>October 21st, 2020<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What has followed has been hair-splitting over the comments; James Martin, who now in clear opposition to Church teaching, tweeted:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>What makes Pope Francis&#8217; comments supporting same-sex civil unions today so momentous? First, he is saying them as Pope, not Archbishop of Buenos Aires. Second, he is clearly supporting, not simply tolerating, civil unions. Third, he is saying it on camera, not privately. Historic.<\/strong> \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamesMartinSJ\/status\/1318970487242956801\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For the record, one priest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CGn08rdjvof\/?fbclid=IwAR1p-AdWUl-ruNNaNPSERx3xDqAX5GdF7w0GZ-UTP_YofpsOorwN6lkK0FA\">attempted to explain<\/a> that the subtitle is a mistranslation of Francis&#8217; words. However, Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez, a theological advisor to Francis, said the translation is accurate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Archbishop Fernandez, a theologian who has long been close to the pope, said that the pope\u2019s phrase is substantially equivalent to the phrase \u201ccivil union.\u201d<\/strong> \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/argentine-archbishop-and-pope-francis-advisor-says-civil-union-not-mistranslated-in-documentary-95995?fbclid=IwAR3w8x2lBPfrnjafNCRgE5XoTnNbNO8ONhouWjovwZtpUQJeEulr2RorzDQ\"><em>Catholic News Agency,\u00a0<\/em>October 22nd, 2020<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As headlines around the world blared &#8216;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kelownadailycourier.ca\/news\/world_news\/article_91895230-6cb2-53ee-b1fd-9ac531c0006d.html\">Francis becomes 1st pope to endorse same-sex civil unions&#8217;<\/a><\/strong>, debate erupted on how the video was edited. It turns out that two different interviews were combined for the whole controversial segment. The first few sentences were constructed from a lengthier comment that Fr. Gerald Murray of EWTN says altered the original context of the Pope&#8217;s comments on families (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/pope-francis-homosexuality-comments-heavily-edited-in-documentary-no-vatican-comment-on-civil-union-88210\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Pope Francis was in fact speaking about the right of homosexuals not to be rejected by their\u00a0<em>own<\/em> families, not about homosexuals creating new families of their own, presumably by adoption or through surrogate motherhood. The problem, though, remains that the Vatican has publicly embraced this film.\u00a0<\/strong> \u2014Fr. Gerald Murray, October 24th, 2020; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecatholicthing.org\/?utm_source=The+Catholic+Thing+Daily&amp;utm_campaign=3a13ea387e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_12_07_01_02_COPY_01&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_769a14e16a-3a13ea387e-244294965\">thecatholicthing.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But it is the second part of the quote where the Pope seems to call for a civil union law that has drawn the most attention and controversy. It comes from raw footage from the Vatican&#8217;s archives of a long television interview with Pope Francis made by Valentina Alazraki, a reporter for Mexico\u2019s Televisa, in May 2019. <em>Catholic News Agency <\/em>and\u00a0 O&#8217;Connell give the missing context of the Televisa interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\">Alazraki\u00a0 asked [Pope Francis]: \u201cYou waged a whole battle over egalitarian weddings, of couples of the same sex in Argentina. And later they say that you arrived here, they elected you pope and you appeared much more liberal than what you were in Argentina. Do you recognize yourself in this description that some people who knew you before make, and was it the grace of the Holy Spirit that gave you a boost? (laughs)\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/faith\/2020\/10\/24\/pope-francis-vatican-communications-civil-union\">America Magazine,<\/a> the pope responded that: \u201cThe grace of the Holy Spirit certainly exists. I have always defended the doctrine. And it is curious that in the law on homosexual marriage\u2026. It is an incongruity to speak of homosexual marriage. But what we have to have is a law of civil union (ley de convivencia civil), so they have the right to be legally covered.\u201d<\/strong> \u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/context-of-popes-civil-union-documentary-comment-reported-14270\">Catholic News Agency<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>October 24th, 2020<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The context in this account is clear: civil unions instead of &#8220;homosexual marriage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis has been outspoken on a number of occasions reaffirming the Church&#8217;s teaching on the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman, and he has unequivocally rejected any notion of &#8220;gay marriage&#8221; and &#8220;gender ideology.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_42258_1('footnote_plugin_reference_42258_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_42258_1('footnote_plugin_reference_42258_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42258_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_42258_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/pope-francis-on\/\"><em>Pope Francis on&#8230;<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_42258_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_42258_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Nonetheless, when Pope Francis said in the documentary, &#8220;I stood up for <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-42280\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pfportr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pfportr.jpg 1385w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pfportr-300x294.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pfportr-1024x1003.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pfportr-768x752.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pfportr-640x627.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>that&#8221; being &#8220;civil unions&#8221;, it confirmed what two biographers have likewise reported in the past about his support of civil unions of some kind as an alternative to same-sex &#8220;marriage.&#8221; In his biography on Francis, journalist Austen Ivereigh wrote:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b class=\"\">Bergoglio knew many gay people and had spiritually accompanied a number of them. He knew their stories of rejection by their families and what it was like to live in fear of being singled out and beaten up. He told a Catholic gay activist, a former theology professor named Marcelo M\u00e1rquez, that he favored gay rights as well as legal recognition for civil unions, which gay couples could also access. But he was utterly opposed to any attempt to redefine marriage in law. \u2018He wanted to defend marriage but without wounding anybody\u2019s dignity or reinforcing their exclusion,\u2019 says a close collaborator of the cardinal\u2019s. \u2018He favored the greatest possible legal inclusion of gay people and their human rights expressed in law, but would never compromise the uniqueness of marriage as being between a man and a woman for the good of children\u2019\u201d<\/b> \u2014<em>The Great Reformer<\/em>, 2015; (p. 312)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This position was also put forward by Sergio Rubin, an Argentine journalist and the authorized biographer of Pope Francis.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_42258_1('footnote_plugin_reference_42258_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_42258_1('footnote_plugin_reference_42258_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42258_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_42258_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pope-endorse-same-sex-civil-unions-eb3509b30ebac35e91aa7cbda2013de2\">apnews.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_42258_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_42258_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> None of this is new and has been widely reported for years. First, Archbishop Coppola confirms that the first part of the interview is speaking about children with &#8220;gay trends&#8221; being accepted with dignity in their homes, which is most agreeable of course.<\/p>\n<p>Then, the Archbishop seems to confirm the context that CNA and\u00a0<em>America\u00a0<\/em>also reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;\">A successive question from the interview was instead inherent in a local law ten years ago in Argentina about &#8220;equal marriage of same-sex couples&#8221; and the opposition of the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires. In this connection, Pope Francis has claimed that &#8220;it is incongruous to talk about gay marriage&#8221;, adding that, in that same context, he had spoken about the right of these people to have some legal coverage: &#8220;What we have to do is a law of civil coexistence; they have the right to be covered legally. I defended that &#8220;. The Holy Father had expressed himself during a 2014 interview: &#8220;Marriage is between a man and a woman. Lay States want to justify civil unions to regulate various situations of coexistence, driven by the demand to regulate economic aspects among people, such as ensuring healthcare. These are covenants of different nature, of which I wouldn&#8217;t know how to give an cast [sic] of different forms. It is necessary to see the various cases and evaluate them in their variety.&#8221; It is therefore evident that Pope Francis has referred to certain state provisions, not certainly the doctrine of the Church, many times reaffirmed in the course of the years.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva;\"> \u2014Archbishop Francis Coppola, October 30th; Facebook statement<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Thus, it is not immediately evident how this clarifies anything at all, or how it does not contradict the CDF&#8217;s considerations that prohibit <em>any<\/em> kind of &#8220;legal recognition&#8221; of said unions.\u00a0<\/div>\n<p>So, as they say, &#8220;the damage is done.&#8221; As I was writing this article, Fr. James Martin was on CNN declaring to the entire world:<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>It&#8217;s not simply he&#8217;s tolerating it, he&#8217;s supporting it&#8230;[Pope Francis] may have in a sense, as we say in the church, developed his own doctrine&#8230; We have to reckon with the fact that the head of the church has now said that he feels that civil unions are ok. And we can\u2019t dismiss that\u2026 Bishops and other people can\u2019t dismiss that as easily as they might want to. People are angry and frustrated, feeling betrayed and confused, especially after the theologically pristine years of John Paul II and Benedict XVI. For me, this is not about Pope Francis. It&#8217;s about Jesus. It&#8217;s about defending Him, defending the truth He died to give us so that we would be free. It&#8217;s about souls. I have several readers who are struggling with same-sex attraction and I love them dearly. They deserve to be fed the truth in love by their shepherds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Talk of schism by some, which is spiritually reckless, is nonetheless real. But as St. Cyprian of Carthage warned:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? To be absolutely clear, I have and continue to defend our Church and our popes where justice and fidelity demands it. Some people, even a priest, have tried to pressure me to revolt against the Holy Father. I have been threatened, called a Freemason, and verbally abused by others for not adopting their &#8220;hermeneutic of suspicion&#8221; that sees every word and action of the Pope through a dark filter, that seeks to judge his motives rather than to understand them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>To avoid rash judgment&#8230; Every good Christian ought to be more ready to give a favorable interpretation to another&#8217;s statement than to condemn it. But if he cannot do so, let him ask how the other understands it. And if the latter understands it badly, let the former correct him with love. If that does not suffice, let the Christian try all suitable ways to bring the other to a correct interpretation so that he may be saved.<\/strong><\/span> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,<\/em> n. 2478<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, that&#8217;s a two way street. Those who have been gracious, having given Francis the benefit of the doubt, now await the Vicar of Christ to help them if they have somehow understood this documentary &#8220;badly.&#8221; Nor should we be intimidated by those voices who, claiming to &#8220;defend the truth,&#8221; discard all charity and accuse those of us remaining in unity with the Holy Father as somehow betraying Christ. They deem their bullying and name-calling as a virtue and your fidelity and patience as a weakness. The message from Our Lady of Medjugorje today is particularly relevant:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>Satan is strong and is fighting to draw all the more hearts to himself. (Luke 22:45)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I know that you, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/our-ladys-little-rabble\/\"><em>Our Lady&#8217;s Little Rabble<\/em><\/a>, are tired. Many are grieving, stunned by the daily events unfolding in both the Church and the world. The temptation is to just turn it all off, ignore it, run, hide, even sleep. Still, lest we fall into despair and self-pity, today I feel Our Lady stirring us, telling us like Our Lord did to his Apostles:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'courier new', courier, monospace;\">Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test. (Luke 22:46)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus did not say, &#8220;Aw, I see how sad you are. Go ahead, sleep away my dear ones.&#8221; No! Get up, be men and women of God, be true disciples and face what it is coming proactively <em>in prayer<\/em>. Why prayer? Yes, this is how we fall asleep in our souls, by letting grief and discouragement, temptation and sin to distract us from the divine conversation.
