It is a day that Jesus promised to pour out immeasurable graces to the degree that, for some, it is <em>&#8220;the last hope of salvation.&#8221;<\/em> Still, many Catholics have no idea what this feast is or have never heard about it from the pulpit. As you&#8217;ll see, this is no ordinary day&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>How Big a Deal?<\/h5>\n<p>According to Saint Faustina&#8217;s diary, Jesus said of Divine Mercy Sunday:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is, the Feast of My Mercy.\u00a0 If they will not adore My mercy, they will perish for all eternity&#8230; tell souls about this great mercy of Mine, because the awful day, the day of My justice, is near.<\/strong><\/em> \u2014<em>Divine Mercy in My Soul,<\/em> Diary of St. Faustina, n. 965\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The &#8220;last hope of salvation&#8221;? One might be tempted to dismiss this along with other dramatic private revelation\u2014except for the fact it was Pope St. John Paul II who inaugurated the Sunday after Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday,\u00a0according to this prophetic\u00a0revelation. (See <em><a href=\"\/blog\/?p=433\">Part II<\/a><\/em> for a complete understanding of Diary entry 965, which does not, of course, restrict salvation to Divine Mercy Sunday.)<\/p>\n<p>Consider these other facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After he was shot in 1981, John Paul II asked that the diary of St. Faustina be entirely re-read to him.<\/li>\n<li>He\u00a0instituted the Divine Mercy Feast in the year 2000, the beginning of the new millennium, which he considered the &#8220;threshold of hope.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>St. Faustina wrote: <em>&#8220;From [Poland] will come forth the spark that will prepare the world for My final coming.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>In 1981 at the Shrine of Merciful Love, John Paul II said:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Right from the beginning of my ministry in St. Peter\u2019s See in Rome, I consider this message [of Divine Mercy] my special task. Providence has assigned it to me in the present situation of man, the Church and the world. It could be said that precisely this situation assigned that message to me as my task before God.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014November 22, 1981 at the Shrine of Merciful Love in Collevalenza, Italy<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block; font-family: Roboto,sans-serif; color: #a7a7a7; font-size: 11px; width: 100%; max-width: 594px;\">\n<div style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; text-align: left;\"><a style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/515554674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden; position: relative; height: 0; padding: 66.835014% 0 0 0; width: 100%;\"><iframe style=\"display: inline-block; position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; margin: 0;\" src=\"\/\/embed.gettyimages.com\/embed\/515554674?et=DcUE98k7QCdPBIkF46uHtg&amp;tld=com&amp;sig=Q29g70jpCbKZp77e--tyXmo56uKidvlazmhSAKUIkIU=&amp;caption=true&amp;ver=1\" width=\"594\" height=\"397\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>During a 1997 pilgrimage to St. Faustina&#8217;s tomb,\u00a0John Paul II testified:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>The message of Divine Mercy has always been near and dear to me&#8230; [it] <\/strong><strong>forms the image of this pontificate.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Forms the image of his pontificate! <\/em>And it was spoken at the tomb of St. Faustina, whom Jesus called His &#8220;Secretary of Divine Mercy.&#8221; It was also John Paul II who canonized Faustina Kowalska in the year 2000. In his homily, he linked the future to her message of mercy:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>What will the years ahead bring us? What will man&#8217;s future on earth be like? We are not given to know. However, it is certain that in addition to new progress there will unfortunately be no lack of painful experiences. But the light of divine mercy, which the Lord in a way wished to return to the world through Sr. Faustina&#8217;s charism, will illumine the way for the men and women of the third millennium. <\/strong>\u2014ST. JOHN PAUL II, <em><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/john_paul_ii\/homilies\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_hom_20000430_faustina_en.html\">Homily<\/a>, <\/em>April 30th, 2000<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>As a rather dramatic exclamation point from Heaven, the Pope died in the beginning hours on the vigil of the Feast of Divine Mercy on April 2nd, 2005.<\/li>\n<li>After a <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.torontosun.com\/news\/world\/2011\/01\/14\/16885421.html\">miraculous healing<\/a>, confirmed by medical science and acquired through the intercession of the late pontiff, John Paul II was beatified on May 1, 2011 on the very feast day he added to the Church calendar.<\/li>\n<li>He was\u00a0canonized on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27th, 2014.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The other title I considered for this article was &#8220;When God Hits Us On the Head With a Hammer (or Mallett).&#8221; How can the significance of this special solemnity escape us when we consider these facts? How can bishops and priests fail to preach, then, the message of Divine Mercy, which the Pope considered his &#8220;task before God,&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_429_1('footnote_plugin_reference_429_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_429_1('footnote_plugin_reference_429_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_429_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_429_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">see <a title=\"\" href=\"\/blog\/2009\/04\/the-time-of-grace-expiring-part-iii\/\"><em>Time of Grace Expiring &#8211; Part III<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_429_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_429_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> and therefore, the shared-task of all those in communion with him?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5>An Ocean of Promises<\/h5>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><em>I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">On that day<\/span> the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy.<\/em><em> The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.<\/em><\/strong> \u2014<em>Divine Mercy in My Soul,<\/em> Diary of St. Faustina, n. 699<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Some pastors ignore this feast because &#8220;there are other days, such as Good Friday, when God remits sins and punishment under similar conditions.&#8221; That is true. But that&#8217;s not all Christ said of Divine Mercy Sunday. On that day, Jesus is promising to &#8220;<em>pour out a whole ocean of graces<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><em>On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened.<\/em> <\/strong>\u2014Ibid.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What Jesus is offering is not just forgiveness, but incomprehensible graces to heal, deliver, and strengthen the soul. I say incomprehensible, because this devotion has a special purpose. Jesus said to St. Faustina:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>You will prepare the world for My final coming.<\/strong><\/em> \u2014Ibid. n. 429<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If that is so, then this opportunity for grace has paramount significance for the Church and for the world. John Paul II must have thought so since, in 2002 at the Divine Mercy Basilica in Cracow, Poland, he quoted this <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-34951\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/jpiidivinemercy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/jpiidivinemercy.jpg 528w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/jpiidivinemercy-222x300.jpg 222w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/>very theme directly from the diary:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>From here there must go forth &#8216;<em>the spark which will prepare the world for [Jesus&#8217;] final coming<\/em>&#8216; <\/strong>(Diary, 1732)<strong>. This spark needs to be lighted by the grace of God. This fire of mercy needs to be passed on to the world.<\/strong> \u2014ST.\u00a0JOHN PAUL II, Consecration of the Divine Mercy Basilica, preface in leatherbound diary, <em>Divine Mercy in My Soul<\/em>, St. Michel Print, 2008 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This reminds me of the promises of Our Lady to bring about the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/21\/the-coming-effect-of-grace\/\">Flame of Love<\/a>, <\/em>which is mercy itself. <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_429_1('footnote_plugin_reference_429_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_429_1('footnote_plugin_reference_429_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_429_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_429_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-convergence-and-the-blessing\/\">The Convergence and the Blessing<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_429_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_429_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Indeed, there is a certain urgency when Jesus says to Faustina:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><em>Secretary of My mercy, write, tell souls about this great mercy of Mine, because the awful day, the day of my justice, is near.<\/em><\/strong>\u2014Ibid. n. 965<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is all to say that Divine Mercy Sunday is, for some, <em>&#8220;the last hope of salvation&#8221;<\/em> because it is on this day that they receive the graces necessary for final perseverance\u00a0<em>in these times,<\/em>\u00a0that they might not otherwise seek out. And what are these times?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Time of Mercy<\/h5>\n<p>The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. In one of her apparitions, the children witnessed an angel hovering above the world about to <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-36684\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/angelosword.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/angelosword.jpg 447w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/angelosword-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/angelosword-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2017\/09\/12\/fatima-and-the-great-shaking\/\">strike the earth with a flaming sword<\/a>. But a light emanating from Mary stopped the angel, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/12\/sheathing-the-sword\/\">justice was delayed<\/a>. The Mother of Mercy was able to implore God to grant the world a &#8220;time of mercy.&#8221; <span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_429_1('footnote_plugin_reference_429_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_429_1('footnote_plugin_reference_429_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_429_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_429_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/fatima-and-the-great-shaking\/\"><em>Fatima, and the Great Shaking<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_429_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_429_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>We know this because Jesus appeared a short time later to a Polish nun named Faustina Kowalska to &#8220;officially&#8221; announce this time of mercy.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>I saw the Lord Jesus, like a king in great majesty, looking down upon our earth with great severity; but because of His Mother\u2019s intercession He prolonged the time of His mercy\u2026<\/strong> \u2014<em>Divine Mercy in My Soul<\/em>, Diary, n. 126I, 1160<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><em><strong>I am prolonging the time of mercy for the sake of [sinners]. But woe to them if they do not recognize this time of My visitation&#8230; <\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Before the Day of Justice, I am sending the Day of Mercy&#8230;<\/em> <\/strong>\u2014Ibid.\u00a0 n. 1160, 1588.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pope Francis recently commented on this time of mercy, and the need for the priesthood to enter into it with all their being:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8230;in this, our time, which is indeed the time of mercy&#8230; It is up to us, as ministers of the Church, to keep this message alive, above all in preaching and in our gestures, in signs and in pastoral choices, such as the decision to restore priority to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and at the same time to works of mercy.<\/strong> \u2014Message to Roman priests, March 6th, 2014; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/pope-francis-to-roman-priests-cry-for-your-people\/\">CNA<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A year later, he added an exclamation mark:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Time, my brothers and sisters, seems to be running out&#8230;\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014address to The Second World Meeting of Popular Movements, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, July 10th, 2015; <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/speeches\/2015\/july\/documents\/papa-francesco_20150709_bolivia-movimenti-popolari.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Christ&#8217;s words to St. Faustina indicate the <em>proximate<\/em> times we are living in, as foretold in Scripture:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Before the day of the Lord comes, the great and manifest day&#8230; it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.<\/strong> (Acts 2:20-21)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-48487 alignright\" style=\"margin: 1px 2px 1px 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jesus-Image-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jesus-Image-2.jpg 706w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jesus-Image-2-185x300.jpg 185w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Jesus-Image-2-631x1024.jpg 631w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/>He made it very simple:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><em><strong>I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: &#8220;Jesus, I trust in You.&#8221; <\/strong><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\">\u2014Ibid. n. 327<\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a way, you can reduce the whole of Catholicism\u2014all our canon laws, papal documents, treatises, exhortations, and bulls\u2014down to those five words: <em>Jesus, I trust in You. <\/em>Divine Mercy Sunday is just another way of entering into that faith, without which we cannot be saved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.<\/strong> (Hebrews 11:6)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As I wrote in <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=424\"><em>Prophetic Perspective<\/em><\/a>, God is patient, allowing His plan to come to fruition, even over the course of many generations. However, this does not mean His plan cannot enter its next phase at any moment.<em> The <a title=\"\" href=\"\/blog\/?p=687\">signs of the times<\/a> tell us that it could be &#8220;soon.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Today is the Day<\/h5>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Today is the day of salvation<\/em>,&#8221; say the Scriptures. And Divine Mercy Sunday is a Day of Mercy. It was asked for by Jesus, and made so by St. John Paul II. We should be shouting this to the world, for an ocean of graces is to be poured out. This is what Christ promised on that special day:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy. <\/strong>\u2014Ibid. n. 1109<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And Jesus is granting something <em>different\u00a0<\/em>than the plenary indulgence (&#8220;complete pardon&#8221; of all sins and temporal punishment) the Church is offering that day under the following conditions:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8230;a plenary indulgence [will be] granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honour of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. &#8220;Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!&#8221;)<\/strong> \u2014<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/tribunals\/apost_penit\/documents\/rc_trib_appen_doc_20020629_decree-ii_en.html\">Apostolic Penitentiary Decree<\/a>, <em>Indulgences attached to devotions in honour of Divine Mercy<\/em>; Archbishop Luigi De Magistris, Tit. Archbishop of Nova Major Pro-Penitentiary;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s different than the Divine Mercy promise from Jesus, which does not require either the intentions for the Pope or complete detachment from the affection of sin. Rather, all that is required is, of course, <em>contrition <\/em>(for a valid Confession) \u2014 the resolution to not sin again.
