So I reassured him that schism is <em>not<\/em> on the table. Period.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5>The Word of God<\/h5>\n<p>His question has come at a time when a fire has been burning in my soul for the <em>Word of God<\/em>. I mentioned this to my spiritual director, and even he was experiencing this internal hunger. Maybe you are too&#8230; It&#8217;s almost as if the controversies in the Church, the politics, the pettiness, the word games, the ambiguity, the endorsement of global agendas, etc. are <em>driving <\/em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-50392\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Holy-Bible.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Holy-Bible.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Holy-Bible-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Holy-Bible-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Holy-Bible-768x1152.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/>me back into the raw, undiluted Word of God. I want to <em>consume <\/em>it.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_50389_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50389_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_50389_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50389_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_50389_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50389_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">And I do in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/real-food-real-presence\/\">Holy Eucharist<\/a>, for Jesus is the &#8216;Word made flesh&#8217; (John 1:14) <\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_50389_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50389_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The Scriptures are never exhausted because they are <em>living, <\/em>always teaching, always nourishing, always enlightening the heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.<\/strong> (Hebrews 4:12)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And yet, we know as Catholics that subjective interpretation of Scripture has limits. As such we are all disciples of that Word, disciples of Jesus (see <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/i-am-a-disciple-of-jesus-christ\/\">I am a Disciple of Jesus Christ<\/a><\/em>). Hence&#8230;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8230;the Catholic Church is not the Pope\u2019s Church and Catholics are therefore not papists but Christians. Christ is the head of the Church and from Him all divine grace and truth passes to the members of His body, which is the Church&#8230; Catholics are not the subjects of ecclesiastical superiors, to whom they owe blind caducal obedience as in a totalitarian political system. As persons in their conscience and prayer, they go directly to God in Christ and in the Holy Spirit. The act of faith is directed directly to God, while the magisterium of the bishops has only the task of faithfully and completely preserving the content of revelation (given in Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition) and presenting it to the Church as revealed by God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Gerhard M\u00fcller, former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith,<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\">January 18, 2024, <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/crisismagazine.com\/opinion\/the-catholic-church-is-not-the-popes-church-and-catholics-are-therefore-not-papists-but-christians-an-exclusive-interview-with-cardinal-gerhard-muller\"> Crisis Magazine<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This basic definition is a perfectly timed shaft of light into the fog of confusion that has divided Catholics these past few weeks. The recent trials are due in large part to an exaggerated understanding of papal infallibility and even false expectations of the man who holds the office. As Cardinal M\u00fcller notes in the same interview, &#8220;In terms of theological depth and precision of expression, Pope Benedict was an exception rather than the norm in the eventful history of popes.&#8221; Indeed, we&#8217;ve enjoyed pristine instruction, even in the non-magisterial commentary of our popes this past century. Even I had come to the point of taking for granted the ease with which I could quote them&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Recovering Perspective<\/h5>\n<p>But the Argentinian pontiff is another story and a reminder that a pope&#8217;s <em>infallibility<\/em> is limited to the rare occasions that he &#8220;confirms his brethren in the faith [and] proclaims by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_50389_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50389_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_50389_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50389_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_50389_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50389_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><em>Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/em>n. 891<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_50389_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50389_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Hence, fraternal correction is not beyond a pope \u2014 &#8220;the best known is the question of the heresy and excommunication of Pope Honorius I,&#8221; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong> If a man does not hold fast to this oneness of Peter, does he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he deserts the Chair\u00a0of Peter upon whom the Church was built, has he still confidence that he is in the Church?<\/strong> \u2014 St. Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, \u201cOn the Unity of the Catholic Church\u201d, n. 4; \u00a0<em>The Faith of the Early Fathers<\/em>, Vol. 1, pp. 220-221<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>They, therefore, walk in the path of dangerous error who believe that they can accept Christ as the Head of the Church, while not adhering loyally to His Vicar on earth. To this ordinary teaching the faithful &#8220;are to adhere to it with religious assent&#8221; which, though distinct from the assent of faith, is nonetheless an extension of it.&#8221; \u2014CCC, 892<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_50389_1_9').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50389_1_9', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> That is what makes Peter&#8217;s successor&#8217;s teaching &#8220;authentic&#8221; and essentially &#8220;Catholic.&#8221; Hence, the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-great-fissure\/\">fraternal correction<\/a> of bishops is not disloyalty or a rejection of the Pope, but a support of his office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>It is not a question of being \u2018pro-\u2019 Pope Francis or \u2018contra-\u2019 Pope Francis. It is a question of defending the Catholic faith, and that means defending the Office of Peter to which the Pope has succeeded.<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Raymond Burke, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicworldreport.com\/2018\/01\/22\/cardinal-burke-it-is-a-source-of-anguish-to-hear-suggestions-that-i-would-lead-a-schism\/\"><em>The Catholic World Report<\/em><\/a>, January 22, 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So you don&#8217;t have to choose sides \u2014 choose Sacred Tradition since, ultimately, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-papacy-is-not-one-pope\/\">The Papacy is Not One Pope<\/a><\/em>. What a great tragedy it is for the world looking in when Catholics cause scandal, either by falling into schism, or by promoting a cult of personality around the Pope, rather than Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Bath Time!<\/h5>\n<p>What is the &#8220;now word&#8221; today? I sense it is the Spirit calling the Church, from top to bottom, to fall on our knees and immerse ourselves again in the Word of God that has been gifted to us in the Holy <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-35992\" style=\"margin: 2px 5px 2px 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/st.-johnleaning4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/st.-johnleaning4.jpg 736w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/st.-johnleaning4-295x300.jpg 295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/>Scriptures. As I wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/novum\/\"><em>Novum<\/em><\/a>, Our Lord Jesus is preparing for Himself a Bride without spot or blemish.
