The sad parade of death led by the rider of the Second Seal of Revelation who &#8220;takes peace away from the world&#8221; (Rev 6:4), boldly marches through our nations. Whether it is through war, abortion, euthanasia, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-great-poisoning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poisoning<\/a> of our food, air, and water or the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-war-on-creation-part-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pharmakeia<\/a><\/em> of the powerful, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/recovering-our-dignity\/\">dignity<\/a> of man is being trodden beneath the hooves of that red horse&#8230; and his peace <em>robbed<\/em>. It is the &#8220;image of God&#8221; that is under assault. <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Whoever attacks human life, in some way attacks God himself.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II,<em>\u00a0Evangelium Vitae<\/em>; n. 10<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, wrote his successor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Western society is a society in which God is absent in the public sphere and has nothing left to offer it. And that is why it is a society in which the measure of humanity is increasingly lost. At individual points it becomes suddenly apparent that what is evil and destroys man has become a <em>matter of course<\/em>.<\/strong> \u2014EMERITUS POPE BENEDICT XVI, Essay: \u2018The Church and the scandal of sexual abuse\u2019;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/full-text-of-benedict-xvi-the-church-and-the-scandal-of-sexual-abuse-59639\">Catholic News Agency<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>April 10th, 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>St. John Paul II clearly foresaw these times and did his best to warn the flock. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_25031995_evangelium-vitae.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Evangelium Vitae<\/a> <\/em>is a powerful and prophetic document that serves as both a warning and instruction to the faithful for this final confrontation &#8220;between the Church and the anti-church, between the Gospel and the anti-gospel.&#8221; You&#8217;ve heard me quote those words a thousand times, but just listen to them once more: there is an <em>anti-Church<\/em> and an <em>anti-gospel<\/em>, he said. We might mistake this to mean atheism vs Christianity. But it is far more subtle and subversive&#8230; it is a false Church <em>within the Church; <\/em>a false gospel <em>inserted<\/em> into the true Gospel. But it&#8217;s poisonous \u2014 toxic to animals and humans alike. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Where there is darnel, there is treachery and toxicity.<\/strong> \u2014Howard Thomas, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioone.org\/doi\/abs\/10.2993\/0278-0771-36.1.29?journalCode=etbi\"><em>Journal of Ethnobiology<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So too, we hear new concepts emerging that seem to bear the appearance of love&#8230; but are devoid of the kernel of <em>truth. <\/em>As bishops&#8217; conferences have stated around the world, the recent document <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-great-fissure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fiducia Supplicans<\/a> <\/em>is the veritable poster child of this &#8220;anti-gospel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>They disorient the Christian faithful by their confusing and ambiguous language. They adulterate and falsify the Word of God, willing to twist and bend it to gain the world\u2019s approval. They are the Judas Iscariots of our time.<\/strong> \u2014Cardinal Sarah, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/catholicherald.co.uk\/commentandblogs\/2019\/04\/05\/as-a-bishop-it-is-my-duty-to-warn-the-west-an-interview-with-cardinal-sarah\/\">Catholic Herald<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>April 5th, 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So now, you and I have awoken to a world that is not only anti-life, to the degree of what appears to be a deliberate programme of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-labor-pains-depopulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depopulation<\/a> underway, but to a powerful segment of the Church that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-anti-mercy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-mercy<\/a>. Not in the sense of being <em>against<\/em> mercy, but twisting what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-authentic-mercy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">true mercy<\/a> is \u2014 to the point of distorting the very purpose of Christ&#8217;s death and resurrection: to save us from our sin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, we arrived at the hour of the Church&#8217;s own Passion&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remembering Our Mission!<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8220;Walk as children of light &#8230; and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness&#8221;<\/strong> (Eph 5:8, 10-11)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even in the face of this overwhelming &#8220;beast&#8221;, St. John Paul II provides what our response ought to be. Naturally, it means building a culture of life where Christians truly value and defend human life from conception to natural death. But it goes much further: it is returning to the very mission of the Church:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>The Church has received the Gospel as a proclamation and a source of joy and salvation&#8230; Born from this evangelizing activity, the Church hears every day the echo of Saint Paul&#8217;s words of warning: &#8220;Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!&#8221; (1 Cor 9:16). As Paul VI wrote, &#8220;evangelization is the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize&#8221;.<\/strong> <span class=\"highlighter--highlighted\" data-highlight-id=\"0\">\u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_25031995_evangelium-vitae.html\">Evangelium Vitae<\/a><\/em>, <\/span>n. 78<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus he says,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"highlighter--highlighted\" data-highlight-id=\"0\"><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>While the urgent need for such a cultural transformation is linked to the present historical situation, it is also rooted in the Church&#8217;s mission of evangelization. The purpose of the Gospel, in fact, is &#8220;to transform humanity from within and to make it new&#8221;. Like the yeast which leavens the whole measure of dough (cf. Mt 13:33), the Gospel is meant to permeate all cultures and give them life from within, so that they may express the full truth about the human person and about human life.<\/strong><em> \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_25031995_evangelium-vitae.html\">Evangelium Vitae<\/a><\/em>, n. 95<\/span><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, how would we ultimately transform our present situation into a &#8220;culture of life&#8221; without heralding He who declared: &#8216;I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life&#8221;? This means that you and I have an obligation, not only to be witnesses in how we live and act, but to be those who proclaim the name of Jesus to those around us \u2014 literally!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>\u2026the finest witness will prove ineffective in the long run if it is not explained, justified\u2026 and made explicit by a clear and unequivocal proclamation of the Lord Jesus. The Good News proclaimed by the witness of life sooner or later has to be proclaimed by the word of life. There is no true evangelization if the name, the teaching, the life, the promises, the kingdom and the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God are not proclaimed.<\/strong> \u2014POPE ST. PAUL VI,\u00a0<em>Evangelii Nuntiandi,\u00a0<\/em>n. 22; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/paul-vi\/en\/apost_exhortations\/documents\/hf_p-vi_exh_19751208_evangelii-nuntiandi.html\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\">vatican.va<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I know this stretches our comfort zone. It is so much easier to just be nice. It&#8217;s so much more peaceful to just be conciliatory. But again, <em>&#8220;Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!&#8221;<\/em> Woe to us if we are cowards!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Western Church has fallen asleep to the point of having <em>fallen away. <\/em>We hardly know the meaning of the word &#8220;martyrdom&#8221; any longer. But it is time for us to recover that kind of courage, that kind of boldness, that kind of <em>love<\/em>. Because if we don&#8217;t, we risk losing our faith in this Great Storm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>The only Catholic families that will remain alive and thriving in the twenty-first century are the families of martyrs.<\/strong> \u2014Servant of God, Fr. Hardon, S.J.,<em> The Blessed Virgin and the Sanctification of the Family<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We have scarcely begun the trials of this Storm that will indeed &#8220;shake the faith of many.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_50514_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50514_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_50514_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50514_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_50514_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50514_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>, n. 675<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_50514_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50514_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> We need to implore the Holy Spirit to help us be &#8220;sold out&#8221; for Jesus, to raise our eyes above this temporal and passing plain to the Kingdom of Heaven. We need to quickly shake ourselves from apathy and cowardice and awaken from the sleep of comfort and materialism. We need to return to Confession, to take up fasting and daily prayer. We need to take our spiritual lives <em>seriously<\/em> because the lukewarm are about to be spit out (Rev 3:216).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Going Out With a Blaze&#8230;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you think this is a call to &#8220;doom and gloom,&#8221; you have sadly misread. It is a call to glory, to being totally free sons and daughters who rise above the weight and morass of this world. Therein lies the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-secret-joy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">secret joy<\/a> of the saints: in losing themselves, they found themselves. Let us prepare to go out in a blaze of glory, denying ourselves and our possessions, and making our witness and our last word the name of <em>Jesus<\/em>. For, said John Paul II, &#8220;to proclaim Jesus is itself to proclaim life.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_50514_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50514_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_50514_1('footnote_plugin_reference_50514_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_50514_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50514_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_enc_25031995_evangelium-vitae.html\">Evangelium Vitae<\/a><\/em>, n. 80<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_50514_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_50514_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>There are values which must never be abandoned for a greater value and even surpass the preservation of physical life. There is martyrdom. God is (about) more than mere physical survival. A life that would be bought by the denial of God, a life that is based on a final lie, is a non-life. Martyrdom is a basic category of Christian existence.
