From the moment she conceived Jesus, she is sent like a pilgrim toward the homes of others. If we are &#8220;Bible-believing&#8221; Christians, ought we not do the same?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Taking Mary Home<\/h5>\n<p>The first to take her into his home is Joseph:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.<\/strong> (Matthew 1:20-21)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then Mary is received into the house of Zechariah:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>When Elizabeth heard Mary\u2019s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, \u201cMost blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.&#8221;<\/strong> (Luke 1:41-42)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>God then sends Mary to Bethlehem, where she is received into humble quarters, shared with animals.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52024_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52024_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52024_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52024_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52024_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52024_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">&#8220;Rather then &#8216;inn&#8217; (Greek <em>pandocheion<\/em>) the Greek <em>kataluma\u00a0<\/em>can mean a living room. The large family room of a simple dwelling would have animals and a manager, perhaps at a lower level. The ox and ass of tradional nativity scenes are a theological reflection of Is 1:3.&#8221; \u2014footnote on Luke 2:8, The Revised New Jerusalem Bible, Study Edition, Image New York, p. 1947<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52024_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52024_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> It was there that the Magi would find her&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8230;on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother.<\/strong> (Matthew 2:11)<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52027\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52027\" class=\"wp-image-52027\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/fresco-Mary.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/fresco-Mary.jpg 859w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/fresco-Mary-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/fresco-Mary-768x815.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52027\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First Known Image of Mary in the catacombs of Priscilla, Rome, Italy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And finally, Mary is literally given to the Church as a Mother beneath the Cross with this instruction in the presence of St. John:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>\u201cWoman, behold, your son.\u201d Then he said to the disciple, \u201cBehold, your mother.\u201d And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.<\/strong> (John 19:26-27)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In each instance, taking Mary into one&#8217;s home is first and foremost an <em>encounter with Jesus.\u00a0<\/em>Joseph encountered the mercy and tenderness of Christ; Elizabeth, the power of Christ; the Magi, His majesty; and St. John, His providence and paternity. It is no wonder then that, from the earliest times, Mary was given the title &#8220;morning star.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><span class=\"highlighter--highlighted\" data-highlight-id=\"1\">Mary, the shining star that announces the Sun.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"highlighter--highlighted\" data-highlight-id=\"3\">\u00a0\u2014POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II, Meeting with Young People at Air Base of Cuatro Vientos, Madrid, Spain; May 3rd, 2003; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-ii\/en\/speeches\/2003\/may\/documents\/hf_jp-ii_spe_20030503_youth-madrid.html\"><span class=\"highlighter--highlighted\" data-highlight-id=\"3\">www.vatican.va<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As I have often said, far from stealing Christ\u2019s thunder, <em>she is the lightning that illuminates the Way to Him.\u00a0<\/em>How?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"text\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"text1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>\u2026the Blessed Virgin\u2019s salutary influence on men\u2026 flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on his mediation, depends entirely on it, and draws all its power from it.<\/strong> <\/span>\u2014<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scborromeo.org\/ccc\/p123a9p6.htm#975\">Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/a>, <\/em>n. 970<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, she mediates the graces merited for us by her Son, the Mediator. She who is &#8220;full of grace&#8221; dispenses these to us when <em>we take her into our own home <\/em>to mother us, as did St. John. Even Martin Luther understood this fundamental relationship between Christ the Head, and us, His mystical Body:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Mary is the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of all of us even though it was Christ alone who reposed on her knees\u2026 If He is ours, we ought to be in His situation; there where He is, we ought also to be and all that He has ought to be ours, and His mother is also our mother.<\/strong> \u2014<em>Sermon<\/em>, Christmas, 1529.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the annual message to Mirjana Dragicevic-Soldo, Our Lady of Medjugorje said recently:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Dear children! With motherly love I implore you: give me your hands folded in prayer, give me your hearts cleansed in confession and I will lead you to my Son. Because, my children, only my Son, with His light, can illuminate the darkness; only He, with His Word, can remove suffering. Therefore, do not be afraid to walk with me, because I am leading you to my Son \u2014 salvation. <\/strong>\u2014March 18, 2025 (with Ecclesiastical approval)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a direct echo of the approved message of Fatima:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;\"><em><strong>My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God. <\/strong><\/em>\u2014Our Lady of Fatima, June 13, 1917<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you are truly a biblical Christian, if you truly want a deeper personal relationship and encounter with Jesus, then listen to His decree: <em>&#8220;Behold, your mother.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>It is Mary\u2019s prerogative to be the Morning Star, which heralds in the sun\u2026\u00a0<em>When she appears in the darkness, we know that He is close at hand<\/em>. <\/strong>\u2014St. John Henry Newman, <em><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fordham.edu\/halsall\/mod\/newman-mary.html\">Letter to the Rev. E. B. Pusey<\/a>; \u201cDifficulties of Anglicans\u201d, Volume II<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Today, on this Feast of St. Joseph, it is a perfect time to imitate Christ&#8217;s foster-father and take Mary into our home. Catholics call it &#8220;consecration&#8221; to Mary. That simply means handing oneself over to her so that she may hand us to Christ, more humble, purified, and obedient. I don&#8217;t know how to illustrate this better than by sharing what happened on the day I consecrated myself to Mary&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Taking Mary Into My Home<\/h5>\n<p>Several years ago, I was given a book called \u201c<em>The Total Consecration by St. Louis de Montfort<\/em>\u201c. It was a book to guide one closer to Jesus through consecration to Mary. I didn\u2019t even know what \u201cconsecration\u201d meant, but I felt <em>drawn<\/em> to read the book anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The prayers and preparation took several weeks\u2026 and were powerful and moving. As the day of consecration approached, I could sense how special this giving of myself to my spiritual Mother would be \u2014 this taking her into my home. As a token of my love and gratitude, which St. Louis suggests, I decided to give Mary a bundle of flowers.<\/p>\n<p>It was kind of a last minute thing&#8230; but I was in a small town and had nowhere to go but the local drug store. They just happened to have some rather \u201cripe\u201d looking flowers in a plastic wrapping. \u201cSorry Mom\u2026,&#8221; I said, &#8220;It\u2019s the best I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went to the local church, and standing before the statue of Mary, I made my consecration to her.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52024_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52024_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52024_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52024_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52024_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52024_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Suggested prayer of consecration:<br \/>\n<br \/><strong>I, (Name), a faithless sinner, <\/strong><strong>renew and ratify today in thy hands, O Immaculate Mother, <\/strong><strong>the vows of my Baptism; <\/strong><strong>I renounce forever Satan, his pomp and works; <\/strong><strong>and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Wisdom, <\/strong><strong>to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, <\/strong><strong>and to be more faithful t o Him than I have ever been before. <\/strong><strong>In the presence of all the heavenly court, <\/strong><strong>I choose thee this day, for my Mother and Mistress. <\/strong><strong>I deliver and consecrate to thee, as thy slave, <\/strong><strong>my body and soul, my goods, both interior and exterior, <\/strong><strong>and even the value of all my good actions, <\/strong><strong>past, present and future; leaving to thee the entire and full right <\/strong><strong>of disposing\u00a0 of me, and all that belongs to me, <\/strong><strong>without exception, according to thy good pleasure <\/strong><strong>for the greater glory of God, in time and in eternity.\u00a0 Amen.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52024_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52024_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> No fireworks. Just a simple prayer of commitment and invitation to let Mary mother me\u2026 perhaps like Mary\u2019s own <em>fiat, <\/em>or her simple commitment to do the daily chores in that little house in Nazareth. Then I placed my imperfect bundle of flowers at her feet and went home.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-20674\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Mary-Mother-of-Innocence_Fotor-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Mary-Mother-of-Innocence_Fotor-1.jpg 686w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Mary-Mother-of-Innocence_Fotor-1-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Later that evening, I returned for Mass. As my family and I crowded into the pew, I glanced over to the statue to see my flowers. They were gone! I figured the janitor probably took one look at them and tossed them out.<\/p>\n<p>But when I looked over at the statue of Jesus\u2026 <em>there were my flowers,<\/em> perfectly arranged in a vase, at the feet of Christ. There was even baby\u2019s breath from heaven-knows-where garnishing the bouquet! Immediately, I was infused with an understanding:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Mary takes us into her arms, as we are, poor and simple\u2026 and presents us to Jesus clothed in her own mantle saying, \u201cThis, too, is my child\u2026 receive him, Lord, for he is precious and beloved.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Several years later, I came across these words from Our Blessed Mother to Fatima seer, Sr. Lucia:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: trebuchet ms, geneva, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>He<\/strong> [Jesus]<strong> wants to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. I promise salvation to those who embrace it, and those souls will be loved by God like flowers placed by me to adorn His throne.<\/strong> \u2014<\/em>This last line re: \u201cflowers\u201d appears in earlier accounts of Lucia\u2019s apparitions.
