The question lies at the heart of His entire purpose. Today, Muslims say he is a prophet; Mormons, believe he was conceived by the Father (with a heavenly wife) as a lesser god and to whom no one should pray; Jehovah Witnesses believe he is Michael the Archangel; others say he is a mere historical figure while others, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/jesus-the-myth\/\">myth<\/a>. The answer to this question is no small thing. Because Jesus and Scripture say something entirely different, if not outrageous: that He is <em>God<\/em>.<!--more-->\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h5>\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5>Who Do You Say That I Am?<\/h5>\n<p>Apologist Isaiah Bennett notes that the Greek <em>proskun\u00e9o<\/em> refers to adoration or worship and is used in reference to God the Father throughout the Bible.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic.com\/magazine\/print-edition\/the-mormon-christ\">catholic.com<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> But it is also used in reference to His Son, Jesus. Now, to worship anyone other than God is idolatry, a breach of the first commandment.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Exodus 20:3<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Yet we read in Matthew what happens when the shepherds encounter the newly born Jesus:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him.<\/strong> (Matthew 2:11)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Neither Mary nor Joseph stops them from what would be scandalous idolatry because they knew that He was the &#8220;Son of the Most High,&#8221; as the angel Gabriel told her.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Luke 1:32<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And the Jewish people believed this title was equivalent to being God.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>This was why the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the sabbath but also called God His own Father, making himself equal with God.<\/strong> (John 5:18)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gabriel also said that Mary was to name Him Jesus &#8220;because He will save people from their sins.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Matt 2;21<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Indeed, later on, Jesus forgives the sins of a paralytic \u2014 and the scribes freaked out:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?<\/strong> (Mark 2:7)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, to <em>prove<\/em> that He was God, Jesus also healed the paralytic.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, even before Jesus was born, when Mary went to visit Elizabeth, her cousin exclaimed:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>How does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?<\/strong> (Luke 1:43)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The title &#8220;Lord&#8221;, though it can be used as a title of honor to someone in authority was also used by God in the Old Testament when identifying Himself to Moses:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>The LORD passed before him and proclaimed: &#8220;The LORD, the LORD, a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love and fidelity.&#8221;<\/strong> (Exodus 34:6)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When Jesus healed a blind man, He asked him if believed &#8220;in the Son of Man,&#8221; to which he replied:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>\u201cI do believe, Lord,\u201d and he worshiped him.<\/strong> (John 9:35-38)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Again, were Jesus only a prophet, archangel, or mere religious leader, He would have corrected this idolatrous behavior on the spot. This is actually what happened when St. John, overcome by his heavenly visions, fell at the feet of the angel to worship him. And immediately the angel said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Don\u2019t! I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers who bear witness to Jesus. Worship God.<\/strong> (Revelation 19:10)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what the blind man did after he was healed. Jesus then turns to the Pharisees and says they are blind for not recognizing Him too. Again, that&#8217;s why they wanted to crucify Him \u2014 precisely because Jesus claimed to be God.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy. You, a man, are making yourself God.<\/strong>\u00a0(John 10:33)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Knowing they wanted to kill Him for this alleged blasphemy, Jesus only doubles-down as He applies to Himself the revered Old Testament name <em>Yahweh,\u00a0<\/em>which means &#8220;I AM&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>God replied to Moses: &#8220;I am who I am.&#8221;<\/strong> (Exodus 3:14)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus warned the Pharisees: &#8220;If you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">John 8:24<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And again, \u201c&#8217;before Abraham came to be, I AM.&#8217; So they picked up stones to throw at him&#8230;&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">John 8:58-59<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Finally, when Jesus used this title in Gethsemane, the impact was unmistakable:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>When He said to them, \u201cI AM,\u201d they turned away and fell to the ground.<\/strong> (John 18:6)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, when doubting Thomas placed his fingers into the wounds of Jesus after His Resurrection, he didn&#8217;t turn away but exclaimed:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8220;My Lord and my God!\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cHave you come to believe because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.\u201d<\/strong> (John 20:28-29)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You and I are those who have not seen Jesus.<em> But who do you say that He is?\u00a0<\/em>St. Paul clearly identified Him as God, making a point of differentiating Him from the angels:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Of the angels he says: \u201cHe makes his angels winds and his ministers a fiery flame\u201d; but of the Son: \u201cYour throne, O God, stands forever and ever; and a righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom.&#8221;<\/strong> (Hebrews 1:7-8)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus often spoke of His Kingdom,<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Luke 22:28-20<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> which He simultaneously calls His &#8220;Father&#8217;s Kingdom.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_8');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_8');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[8]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_8\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. Matt 26:29<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_8').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_8', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And that&#8217;s no surprise since the Jews wanted to stone Him when he also said, &#8220;The Father and I are one.\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_9');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_9');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_9\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[9]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_9\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">John 10:30<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_9').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_9', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And thus of this coming Kingdom, St. Paul says we are&#8230;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8230;awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.<\/strong> (Titus 2:13)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While there are many more Scriptures one could cite, it would not be fitting to end here without quoting the introduction to St. John&#8217;s Gospel where he speaks of Jesus whom He calls the &#8220;Word made flesh&#8221;:<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_10');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52179_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52179_1_10');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_10\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[10]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_10\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. John 1:14<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52179_1_10').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52179_1_10', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.<\/strong> (John 1:1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Blessed<\/h5>\n<p>Why is this important, or rather, why in the words of Jesus would those who believe in Him be &#8220;blessed&#8221;? Will believing in other religious figures such as Mohammad, Buddha, or the Dali Lama make you blessed? In the Old Testament, the Israelites expected that <em>God Himself<\/em> would come as a Messiah to liberate them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Here is your God, He comes with vindication; with divine recompense He comes to save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall see, and the ears of the deaf be opened&#8230;<\/strong> (Isaiah 35:4-5)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When Jesus read from the scrolls in the synagogue near the beginning of His earthly ministry, He echoed these words ascribing them to himself:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.<\/strong> (Luke 4:18-19; cf.
