As St. Paul rejoiced in his letter to the Ephesians:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before Him.<\/strong> (Ephesians 1:3-4)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The goal of Christ&#8217;s coming is to restore us\u00a0<em>in the image in which He created us.\u00a0<\/em>This is what it means to truly live, or as Church Father St. Irenaeus summed up: \u201cThe glory of God is man fully alive!\u201d<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/0103420.htm\">Against Heresies<\/a>, <\/em>Book IV, Chapter 20, n. 7<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> To be &#8220;fully alive&#8221; is, in a word, to be Jesus. Rom 8:29; 1 Cor 15:49; Gal 4:19<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> We are to &#8220;put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Colossians 3:10<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> We are not to conform ourselves to this age but to &#8220;be transformed by the renewal of your mind,&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Romans 122:2<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Clearly, St. Paul is saying the Christian life is not a &#8220;one and done&#8221; moment at the baptismal font, but a progression in <em>knowing<\/em> Jesus more and more so that we become like Him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>I am again in labor until Christ be formed in you!<\/strong> (Galatians 4:19)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a supernatural process, and so we don&#8217;t get there all at once. As the late Benedict XVI said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Faith is a journey of illumination: it starts with the humility of recognizing oneself as needy of salvation and arrives at the personal encounter with Christ, who calls one to follow Him on the way of love.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI,\u00a0<em>Angelus Address,\u00a0<\/em>October 29th, 2006<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>How do know what is the &#8220;way of love?&#8221; Where do I find it, how do I follow it? Because the world is filled with false prophets and numerous religions that claim <em>they<\/em> have the answer. But here&#8217;s what Jesus said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>You call me \u2018teacher\u2019 and \u2018master,\u2019 and rightly so, for indeed I am&#8230; I am the way, and the truth, and the life.<\/strong> (John 13:13, 14:6)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Word of God<\/h5>\n<p>Jesus is the &#8220;<em>Word<\/em> made flesh.&#8221; Throughout the centuries, this Word has spoken through the prophets and patriarchs until He was born in history 2000 years ago of a virgin mother. The Word appeared among us and spoke into the darkness;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. John 1:5<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> He proclaimed the Gospel to the people of that time; He then suffered and died, and rose from the dead to confirm that the &#8220;Word was God.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">John 1:1<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Finally, before ascending to Heaven, Jesus the Word entrusted His word<em>\u00a0<\/em>to the Twelve Apostles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, <em>teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.<\/em><\/strong> (Matthew 28:19-20)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Jesus wants you and I, then, to listen to His Apostles because they alone were entrusted with this Word, what we call the &#8220;deposit of faith.&#8221; If you doubt this, listen again to what Jesus said to them:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Whoever listens to you listens to Me. Whoever rejects you rejects Me. And whoever rejects Me rejects the one who sent Me.<\/strong> (Luke 10:16)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Voice of the Divine Teacher, then, echoes down through the ages to us today through <em>apostolic succession<\/em> \u2014 the bishops who replaced the Apostles after they died, and so on. And we know the Word we have received and are receiving from them is infallible because Jesus promised it would be so:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>When He comes, the Spirit of truth, He will guide you to all truth.<\/strong> (John 16:13)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, we can know the &#8220;way of love&#8221;, all its mysterious paths and turns, precisely because Jesus, our Teacher, said so. The integrity of the &#8220;deposit of faith&#8221; rests not on fallible men but on the Holy Spirit whom Jesus sent upon the Church at Pentecost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Listening to the Word<\/h5>\n<p>Several witnesses of Jesus&#8217;s life, including Peter the first pope, wrote down many things about Christ&#8217;s life, works, and His teachings. In the councils of Carthage (393, 397, 419 AD) and Hippo (393 AD), the Church confirmed those writings, including those all the way back to the Old Testament, which she deemed divinely inspired. And hence, the &#8220;Bible&#8221; was born. Until then, the only way the Gospel was known was by word of mouth and the various letters in circulation. This is why St. Paul instructed the Thessalonians:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.<\/strong> (2 Thessalonians 2:15)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For within these traditions, both oral or written, were the various instructions of Jesus in order to guide His brothers and sisters along the &#8220;way of love.&#8221; They contain practical things, like how the Church was to appoint new shepherds;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Titus 1:5-9; 1 Tim 3:1-10<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> It was truly a powerful time when we were left like the two disciples who walked with Jesus on the road to Emmaus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Were not our hearts burning within us while He spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?<\/strong> (Luke 24:32)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At one point, the priest with me suddenly exclaimed: \u201cMy God, these Scriptures are living! They&#8217;re living! In seminary, we were taught to approach the Scriptures like they were laboratory specimens to be dissected and mutilated!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, going back to what was said at the beginning&#8230; Jesus wants to prepare for Himself a Bride who is holy and without blemish. How?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Christ loved the Church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, <em>cleansing her by the bath of water with the Word,<\/em> that He might present to himself the Church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.<\/strong> (Ephesians 5:25-27)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let Jesus bathe you in the Word of God. If you do not read your Bible, it&#8217;s time to start. St. Jerome once said, &#8220;Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.&#8221; Jesus wants you to know Him and thus know the Way of Love. The Scriptures will teach you; they will encourage you; strengthen, console, correct, and direct your life \u2014 and you will be &#8220;strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_19');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_52300_1('footnote_plugin_reference_52300_1_19');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_19\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[19]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_19\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Ephesians 3:16<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_52300_1_19').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_52300_1_19', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Remaining always on the lap of the Church as a mother, she will help you understand the Scriptures in the way that God intends so that you may avoid the pitfalls of deception.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ah, so much more can be said. But it&#8217;s more crucial that you\u00a0<em>experience\u00a0<\/em>what is said here. Indeed, reading the Scriptures should be part of the conversation of <em>prayer<\/em>, the intimate dialogue between you and your Savior, you and your Teacher where you can hear His living voice.
