The Holy Spirit fell upon those gathered setting many hearts ablaze. There were many emotional and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/JLXfYIxGJWw?si=1ok82QMf6YBDORr5\">physical healings<\/a> throughout the weekend. But I was particularly drawn to the young men gathered there and an awareness of their need to be strengthened and supported&#8230; but that was just the beginning.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5>The Lost Boys<\/h5>\n<p>On my return flight home, I caught the last few minutes of the Charlie Kirk Memorial. As it ended, I had the overwhelming sense that there is an incredible (but small) window to reach out in particular to the <em>young men<\/em> of this generation; to intercept, as it were, the wave of souls being awakened at this hour. I have, for months now, been pondering how the older generation has a unique role to play in helping to guide the youth (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/on-growing-old\/\"><em>On Growing Old<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, words came from outside of me as they often do: <em>This is the Moment&#8230; <\/em>And about a second later, I heard in my headphones the words: &#8220;This is the moment&#8230;&#8221; coming from the broadcast!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-53032\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lost-Boy2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lost-Boy2.jpg 790w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lost-Boy2-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lost-Boy2-768x972.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/>Since I had no access to the Internet to do some work, I decided to watch a movie on the plane. The title &#8220;The Grizzlies&#8221; caught my attention. Turns out, it&#8217;s a beautiful movie about a teacher flown up to a small far north community that is reeling from high suicide rates and young men utterly lost to drugs and alcohol. In simply giving these young men focus and a sense of dignity, the <em>culture of death\u00a0<\/em>among them was largely averted. The message to me, personally, was unmistakable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That night in my hotel room, my heart was burning with this new &#8220;now word,&#8221; recalling how <em>boldly\u00a0<\/em>the Spirit moved in me as I was praying over the <em>men<\/em> at the conference. I grabbed my computer and began to write some ministry colleagues: &#8220;<em>This is the moment<\/em> for us to reach out, in particular, to young men. They have been stirred and awakened by what happened to Charlie. But they need guidance&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I got in my car to make the journey home. When I turned on my radio, Billy Graham was preaching at a seminary in Louisville, Kentucky in 1993. font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 0:48\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"47770\" data-end=\"53870\">I recently asked a university president what he thought was the greatest need of our hour. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 0:55\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"54790\" data-end=\"57590\">And after careful consideration, the president responded, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\" data-timestamp=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 0:58\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"58470\" data-end=\"62310\">I may surprise you because I&#8217;m not a religious man,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 1:03\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"62770\" data-end=\"68230\">but I believe that the greatest need that we have at this hour is a spiritual awakening<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 1:08\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"68230\" data-end=\"74570\">which will restore individual and collective morals and integrity throughout the nation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 1:16\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"75750\" data-end=\"77390\">And I agree with that.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\" data-timestamp=\"\">\u00a0<\/span>I believe that the greatest need that we have at this hour is a spiritual awakening&#8230; <span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\" data-timestamp=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 1:36\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"95730\" data-end=\"98810\">I&#8217;m going to read from Peter&#8217;s account in Joel in Acts 2&#8230;: <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 1:44\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"104170\" data-end=\"109170\">And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God,<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 1:49\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"109170\" data-end=\"117590\">I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 1:58\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"118150\" data-end=\"122890\">Your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 2:04\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"123870\" data-end=\"132030\">And on my servants and on my handmaidens, I will pour out in those days of my spirit and they shall prophesy.<\/span><\/span> <\/em><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 2:12\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"132030\" data-end=\"140030\"><em>And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs in the earth beneath, blood and fire and vapor of smoke, the sun shall be turned into darkness. <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 2:21\">The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before that great and notable day of the Lord come. In our context, where I&#8217;m an old man, that means that they will know how to support the vision of the young&#8230; I think we need to support these young men that God is raising up. And it&#8217;s not easy for an old generation to hand the torch to a new generation that&#8217;s coming up&#8230; <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 5:14\">In addition, people in the midst of a very impersonal computer age are hungry.<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 5:20\">They&#8217;re hungry and thirsty&#8230; <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 6:39\">Yes, our nation can be changed.<\/span><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\" data-timestamp=\"\"> \u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 6:42\">It could start with you.<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 6:44\">Revivals start in the heart of somebody&#8230; <span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\" data-timestamp=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:29\">Yes, an awakening could bring a challenge<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:32\">to our young people.<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:35\">And our young people need it desperately, <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:38\">I can tell you. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\" title=\"Play starting at 2:12\"><span class=\"group-hover:bg-base-200 rounded p-0.5 -m-0.5\" data-start=\"132030\" data-end=\"140030\"><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 6:44\"><strong><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:46\">And the evangelization of the world&#8230; an <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:48\">awakening <\/span><span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:50\">could bring about the evangelization of the world<\/span> <span class=\"cursor-pointer group\" title=\"Play starting at 13:53\">in our generation.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"opacity-80 text-sm\" data-timestamp=\"\"> \u2014 &#8220;America Needs Spiritual Revival&#8221;, 1993, <a href=\"https:\/\/billygraham.org\/sermons\/america-needs-spiritual-revival\">billygraham.org<\/a>; extended version <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.sbts.edu\/handle\/10392\/4682\">here<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>UPDATE. As a young man growing up, I was longing to hear truth proclaimed from the pulpit. But more often than not, we were given vague, uninspired ramblings that neither taught nor challenged us to deeper conversion and a deeper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-necessity-of-the-interior-life\/\">interior life<\/a>. Political correctness, rationalism, and a desire to please everyone left many Catholics in the pews groping in the darkness.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Woe to the shepherds of Israel who have been pasturing themselves! Should not shepherds pasture the flock?&#8230; You did not strengthen the weak nor heal the sick nor bind up the injured. You did not bring back the stray or seek the lost but ruled them harshly and brutally. So they were scattered for lack of a shepherd, and became food for all the wild beasts. They were scattered and wandered over all the mountains and high hills; over the entire surface of the earth my sheep were scattered. No one looked after them or searched for them.<\/strong> (Ezekiel 34:2-6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Charlie Kirk referred to young men as the &#8220;lost boys of our generation,&#8221; and like a good shepherd armed with rod and staff, set out on college campuses to find them. And he still is. As Church Father Tertullian said, &#8220;The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.&#8221; Charlie Kirk&#8217;s videos are like seeds now, being scattered across the globe as millions who&#8217;ve never heard of him begin to watch. But who will water these seeds?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>A New Evangelization<\/h5>\n<p>The need for this new evangelization was foreseen decades ago. One of the least known and quoted pontiffs is John Paul I. He reigned only 33 days before passing away in 1978. Still, he proclaimed perhaps the most crucial word of our times:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>A great challenge of our day is the full evangelization of all those who have been baptized.<\/strong> \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL I, Address to a group of Bishops of the Phillipines, September 28, 1978,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/john-paul-i\/en\/speeches\/documents\/hf_jp-i_spe_28091978_philippian-bishops.html\">vatican.va<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That language might have startled people of that time, many who perhaps presumed that just &#8220;being Catholic&#8221; in name was enough. But clearly, it was not. What was needed was a &#8220;full evangelization&#8221; of those in the pews in order to counter the <em>spiritus mundi <\/em>(&#8220;spirit of the world&#8221;). In the words of his successor :<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Sometimes even Catholics have lost or never had the chance to experience Christ personally: not Christ as a mere \u2018paradigm\u2019 or \u2018value\u2019, but as the living Lord, \u2018the way, and the truth, and the life\u2019<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u2014POPE JOHN PAUL II,\u00a0<em>L\u2019Osservatore Romano (English Edition of the Vatican Newspaper),\u00a0<\/em>March 24, 1993, p.3.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And thus began the &#8220;new evangelization,&#8221; or at least, that was John Paul II&#8217;s hope:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>I sense that the moment has come to commit all of the Church\u2019s energies to a new evangelization and to the mission\u00a0<em>ad gente\u00a0<\/em>(to the nations)<\/strong>. \u2014JOHN PAUL II,\u00a0<em>Redemptoris Missio,\u00a0<\/em>n. 3<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">But as I discovered firsthand, the Holy Father was barely being heeded on the local level. Many bishops were afraid of the laity, afraid especially of those of us who had a &#8220;grassroots&#8221; calling instead of a Masters in Divinity. Parishes seemed more open to bingos and yoga than evangelization. And the worldliness of &#8220;Sunday Catholics&#8221; and the sexual scandals of the clergy seemed to be driving more people away than to the Church. Were it not for John Paul II&#8217;s World Youth Days, would there even be parishes in many places?<\/p>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Yet, there is a remnant of faithful Catholics today, many silver-haired, who have been prepared precisely for this hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<h5 align=\"LEFT\">This is the Moment&#8230;<\/h5>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">Perhaps one of the most significant and little known aspects of Charlie Kirk, at least before his death, was that he appeared to be on a trajectory toward the Catholic Church, where his wife already worships. They don&#8217;t need to be guilted \u2014 they <em>already know.\u00a0<\/em>Rather, they need to be loved, then challenged, then given direction to become men of God&#8230; or risk being swept away in the spiritual battle raging around us. These are apocalyptic times \u2014 but don&#8217;t take my word for it:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>This fight in which we find ourselves\u2026 [against] powers that destroy the world, are spoken of in chapter 12 of Revelation\u2026 It is said that the dragon directs a great stream of water against the fleeing woman, to sweep her away\u2026 I think that it is easy to interpret what the river stands for: it is these currents that dominate everyone, and want to eliminate the faith of the Church, which seems to have nowhere to stand before the power of these currents that impose themselves as the only way of thinking, the only way of life.\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI, first session of the special synod on the Middle East, October 10th, 2010<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\"><em>This is the moment<\/em>, then, to show them another way of thinking, another way that leads to He who is Life itself: JESUS.
