The trial humanity is collectively facing is essentially the same one Adam and Eve faced in the Garden: the choice between obedience to the Creator and His designs&#8230; or to eat from &#8220;the tree of knowledge of good and evil&#8221; (Gen 2:9). Today, this ancient tree has taken on the form of <em>artificial intelligence<\/em> and its <em>false promises<\/em>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>The &#8220;tree of the knowledge of good and evil&#8221; symbolically evokes the insurmountable limits that man, being a creature, must freely recognize and respect with trust. Man is dependent on his Creator, and subject to the laws of creation and to the moral norms that govern the use of freedom.<\/strong><\/span> \u2014<em>Catechism of the Catholic Church,\u00a0<\/em>n. 396<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h5>\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5>The Ancient Tree<\/h5>\n<p>At the outset, it may seem odd that God forbade Adam to eat of this tree. What is wrong, after all, with knowledge? In truth, as a rational being made in God&#8217;s image, Adam already <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-53165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tree-of-Knowledge3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tree-of-Knowledge3.jpg 728w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tree-of-Knowledge3-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/>possessed the gift of reason and the light of the Divine Will in order to discern good from evil. Rather, this tree existed, it seems, as a <em>test<\/em> of Adam&#8217;s love and freedom and whether he would respect the boundary that God alone determines good and evil, right and wrong.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_53162_1('footnote_plugin_reference_53162_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_53162_1('footnote_plugin_reference_53162_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_53162_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_53162_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">CCC, 397<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_53162_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_53162_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Did God really say, \u2018You shall not eat from any of the trees in the garden\u2019?\u201d The woman answered the snake: \u201cWe may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, \u2018You shall not eat it or even touch it, or else you will die.\u2019\u201d But the snake said to the woman: \u201cYou certainly will not die! God knows well that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, who know good and evil.\u201d The woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and the tree was desirable for gaining wisdom.<\/strong> (Genesis 3:1-6)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The snake presents the tree as a source of <em>hidden esoteric knowledge<\/em> that, being banned, prevents humans from becoming &#8220;like gods, who know good and evil&#8221; (Gen 3:5).\u00a0 This is essentially the heresy of <em>Gnosticism<\/em>. It has reappeared throughout the ages under new guises, beginning in particular with idolatrous Jews who conceived the Kabbala&#8230; to the secret societies of our day (eg. This has predictably taken a dark, egregious form.
