I am out of the studio this week, and so there is no podcast for this reflection…<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\nF<\/span>or over a century, we have heard the promise of a coming “Triumph of the Immaculate Heart”<\/em> that will usher in a “period of peace”<\/em> for the whole world. Here is the full context of what was promised at Fatima in 1917:<\/p>\n God\u2026 is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/span> \u2014Our Lady to Francisco Marto (1908 \u20131919), Jacinta Marto (1910\u20131920) and L\u00facia dos Santos (1907\u20132005); <\/span>Message of Fatima,\u00a0<\/i>vatican.va<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n To understand what this “Triumph” is, we have to first understand what Our Lady means by peace.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n True peace is not the absence of noise, or even war; it is not the mere existence of a “peace treaty” or apparent “ceasefire.” Rather, Jesus speaks of a peace that is literally out of this world.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.<\/b> (John 14:27)<\/span><\/p>\n St. Paul instructs the Philippians that if they enter into a spirit of total abandonment to God, rejoicing in all things since they are the permissive will of God, then…<\/p>\n ...the peace of God, that surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.<\/strong> (Philippians 4:7)<\/span><\/p>\n How does one find this peace, much less experience a “period of peace” in our wayward world?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Scriptures are brimming with hints on how to attain the peace “that surpasses all understanding,” beginning with Our Lord himself:<\/p>\n Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For My yoke is easy, and My burden light.<\/b>\u00a0(Matthew 11:29-30)<\/span><\/p>\n Peace, or what Jesus also calls\u00a0rest, comes from<\/em> taking up Christ’s yoke. What is this yoke? St. Paul writes to the Galatians:<\/p>\n For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery<\/em>.<\/b> (Galatians 5:1)<\/span><\/p>\n Jesus said,\u00a0<\/p>\n Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.<\/strong> (John 8:34)<\/span><\/p>\n So it’s clear that the yoke Jesus extends to us is His Word, or more precisely, obedience to it<\/em>.\u00a0<\/em>Disobedience leads to unrest and slavery; obedience leads to rest and peace, to interior freedom and joy. Everyone on the planet experiences this to one degree or another, even non-Christians, since God has given all of us a conscience.[1]<\/sup><\/a>Hence, “Evangelization and interreligious dialogue, far from being opposed, mutually support and nourish one another.” [Evangelii Gaudium<\/em><\/a>, n. 251] See A Gospel for All<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span>\n
