In fact, they may well signal the final stage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-suicide-of-the-west\/\">West&#8217;s collapse<\/a>&#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Agitators<\/h5>\n<p>Central to the recent elections is the controversial billionaire and President, Donald J. Trump. Likewise, Francis\u2019 unorthodox and Jesuit style of creating a \u201cmess\u201d exposed the \u201cwolves in sheep\u2019s clothing\u201d eager to \u201cupdate\u201d Church teaching; they have come out into the open, their intent clear, their boldness growing.'<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_1');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_1');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_1\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-agitators-part-ii\/\">The Agitators<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Part II<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Of course, Leo XIV is now Pope \u2014 though little has been done to end the confusing and, at times, mixed messaging from the Vatican.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a word, the offices of the President and the Pope are in disarray.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Filling the Vacuum<\/h5>\n<p>Tragically, the subsequent vacuum in moral authority is rapidly being filled with extremists and apostates. This, while pews in many places are emptying and churches closing. Faith in the West is flickering out like a flame.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_2');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_2');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_2\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/the-suicide-of-the-west\/\"><em>The Suicide of the West<\/em><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_2').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_2', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here again, I find myself repeating the prophetic warning of the late American Archbishop, Blessed Fulton Sheen, that now seems aimed at the current state of America:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Communism, then, is coming back again on the Western world, because something died in the Western world \u2014 namely,\u00a0 the strong faith of men in the God that made them. <\/strong>\u2014\u201cCommunism in America\u201d, cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TZAc1A3bYiY\">youtube.com<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h5>\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5>The Collapse of Christendom<\/h5>\n<p>There&#8217;s a bigger picture worth paying close attention to. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">According to the Early Church Fathers, the collapse of the West, that is, the Roman Empire, which represented Christendom, will usher in the Antichrist after a <em>revolution<\/em> against it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><b>This revolt or falling off is generally understood, by the ancient Fathers, of a revolt from the Roman empire, which was first to be destroyed, before the coming of Antichrist. It may, perhaps, be understood also of a revolt of many nations from the Catholic Church which has, in part, happened already, by the means of Mahomet, Luther, etc. and it may be supposed, will be more general in the days of the Antichrist.<\/b>\u00a0\u2014footnote on 2 Thess 2:3,\u00a0<i>Douay-Rheims Holy Bible<\/i>, Baronius Press Limited, 2003; p. 235<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Roman Empire (Christendom) has two basic elements: the <em>spiritual<\/em>, represented by the Catholic Church and headed by the Pope; and the\u00a0<em>political<\/em>, represented by the once-Christian Western nations.\u00a0Arguably, America is the <em>last political stronghold<\/em> of Christianity due to its economic and military power holding back the &#8220;barbarians.&#8221; On the other hand, Benedict XVI said that the Pope, the rock of Peter, is also a bulwark against a flood of iniquity:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>Abraham, the father of faith, is by his faith the rock that holds back chaos, the onrushing primordial flood of destruction, and thus sustains creation. Simon, the first to confess Jesus as the Christ\u2026 now becomes by virtue of his Abrahamic faith, which is renewed in Christ, <em>the rock that stands against the impure tide of unbelief and its destruction of man<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI (Cardinal Ratzinger),\u00a0<em>Called to Communion, Understanding the Church Today<\/em>, Adrian Walker, Tr., p. 55-56<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, what has changed?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Collapse of Credibility<\/h5>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-54978\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Prosperity-Gospel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Prosperity-Gospel.jpg 1160w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Prosperity-Gospel-290x300.jpg 290w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Prosperity-Gospel-990x1024.jpg 990w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/Prosperity-Gospel-768x794.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/>In short,\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Christendom&#8217;s\u00a0<em>credibility <\/em><\/span>is in chaos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Christianity is no longer relevant in Europe, as Islam is quickly supplanting the faith there. In America, the &#8220;conservative right&#8221; has become conflated with Evangelical fundamentalism that often represents a messaging that is incompatible with Christianity \u2014 such as the so-called &#8220;prosperity gospel&#8221;; a constant war footing to defend &#8220;national interests&#8221;; so-called Christian &#8220;influencers&#8221; who use their bodies and Bibles to peddle themselves; and, if we are honest, an unfettered support of Trump that failed to call him to greater accountability and higher standards of conduct. In a word, Trump and the &#8220;religious right&#8221; were conflated, violating at times a critical distinction needed between <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/religion-and-politics\/\">Religion and Politics<\/a>.<\/em> (Was the recent vote against the Republicans, in part, a vote against a hollow, if not hypocritical, form of Christianity?)<\/p>\n<p>As for the Church, cultural Catholicism in the West, barely distinguishable from secularism, has hardly turned heads. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/political-correctness-and-the-great-apostasy\/\">Political correctness<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/woke-vs-awake\/\">wokism<\/a> in Catholic institutions, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wormwood\/\">emasculation of the clergy<\/a> have all but neutered the powerful counter-witness that should be visible &#8220;like a city set on a mountain.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_3');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_3');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_3\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">Matthew 5:14<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_3').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_3', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What <em>has<\/em> turned heads, however, are the sexual abuse scandals among clergy that have grabbed headlines for decades, seriously undermining the Church&#8217;s voice and mission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>\u2026the priesthood suddenly seemed to be a place of shame and every priest was under suspicion\u2026 As a result the faith as such becomes unbelievable, and the Church can no longer present herself credibly as the herald of the Lord.<\/strong> \u2014POPE BENEDICT XVI,\u00a0<em>Light of the World: The Pope, the Church, and the Signs of the Times<\/em> (Ignatius Press), p. 25<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So where are we at?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The Purification Comes<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2026\/11\/04\/democrats-take-over-congress-will-push-abortions-up-to-birth-and-tax-funded-abortion\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-55011  alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/CleanShot-2026-11-04-at-10.08.38-PM@2x.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/CleanShot-2026-11-04-at-10.08.38-PM@2x.jpg 2520w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/CleanShot-2026-11-04-at-10.08.38-PM@2x-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/CleanShot-2026-11-04-at-10.08.38-PM@2x-1024x561.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/CleanShot-2026-11-04-at-10.08.38-PM@2x-768x421.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/CleanShot-2026-11-04-at-10.08.38-PM@2x-1536x841.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/CleanShot-2026-11-04-at-10.08.38-PM@2x-2048x1122.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The truth is that there really is no nation left in the West to safeguard Christianity (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/removing-the-restrainer\/\"><em>Removing the Restrainer<\/em>)<\/a>. For instance, a new UN draft treaty on &#8220;crimes against humanity&#8221; could be used to fine and jail religious conservatives and anyone else who objects to gender ideology.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_4');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_4');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_4\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/new-un-treaty-would-make-homophobia-a-crime-against-humanity\/\">c-fam.org<\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_4').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_4', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> The European Union, Mark Carney&#8217;s Canada, or a Democratic led United States would likely not oppose this. For the &#8220;culture of death&#8221; is now firmly entrenched in the West as a &#8220;value&#8221; and &#8220;right.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Christianity is not a political party, nation, or military power. It is the mystical Body of Christ, the kingdom of God on earth.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_5');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_5');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_5\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">&#8220;The Catholic Church, which is the kingdom of Christ on earth, [is] destined to be spread among all men and all nations\u2026&#8221; \u2014POPE PIUS XI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/pius-xi\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_p-xi_enc_11121925_quas-primas.html\"><em>Quas Primas<\/em><\/a>, Encyclical, n. 12, Dec. 11th, 1925<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_5').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_5', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> Though Christianity can transform continents and even form a &#8220;civilization of love,&#8221; as it once did in Europe and beyond, it remains a kingdom that is &#8220;not of this world.&#8221;<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_6');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_6');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_6\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf. John 18:36<\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_6').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_6', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script> And when it does become worldly, the Church must be purified.<\/p>\n<p>In a particularly lucid moment, Pope Francis said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>\u2026worldliness is the root of evil and it can lead us to abandon our traditions and negotiate our loyalty to God who is always faithful. This\u2026 is called <em>apostasy<\/em>, which\u2026 is a form of \u201cadultery\u201d which takes place when we negotiate the essence of our being: loyalty to the Lord<\/strong>. \u2014POPE FRANCIS from a homily; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/aleteia.org\/2013\/11\/25\/the-cosmic-struggle-between-darkness-and-light\/\">aleteia.org<\/a> (2013)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hence, wrote Benedict XVI while still a Cardinal:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>The Church will be reduced in its dimensions, it will be necessary to start again. But it will never represent the thought of the Church. As Jesus allegedly said to Sulema Gomez, a credible seer from El Salvador worth discerning:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong><em>Look around you; see how everything is coming to pass. <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>And yet, there are so many people who do not believe, who do not see that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/something-great-is-about-to-happen\/\">something great is about to happen<\/a>. They believe that everything is normal; that life will continue as it is right now; that they have all the time in the world to live life however they please. Praise and bless the Name of the Lord \u2014 and you will see all the wonders He has done and does for all who love Him. When these events occur, praise and bless the Name of the Lord; and you will see how you will be protected \u2014 if you believe; if you have faith when all seems lost. By saying <em>&#8220;all things must be fulfilled,&#8221;<\/em> He confirms what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/why-arent-the-popes-shouting\/\">the popes<\/a> have been saying for over a century: the Scriptures and salvation history appear to be entering their climactic fulfillment.<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" onclick=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_7');\" onkeypress=\"footnote_moveToReference_54958_1('footnote_plugin_reference_54958_1_7');\" ><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><span id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_7\" class=\"footnote_tooltip\">cf.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markmallett.com\/blog\/understanding-the-final-confrontation\/\"><em>Understanding the Final Confrontation<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/span><script type=\"text\/javascript\"> jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_54958_1_7').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_54958_1_7', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top right', relative: true, offset: [10, 10], });<\/script>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Second, the message doesn&#8217;t gloss over that what&#8217;s about to come will surprise many, as the Scriptures themselves attest:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><strong>When people are saying, \u201cPeace and security,\u201d then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.<\/strong> (1 Thessalonians 5:3)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>&#8230;their awakening will be brutal, for they do not know when death may take them by surprise. Death may surprise them while they are sleeping, celebrating, or enjoying themselves, and at that moment, there will be gnashing of teeth. Prepare yourselves today; tomorrow it may be too late.<\/strong> <\/em>\u2014Jesus to Sulema, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countdowntothekingdom.com\/sulema-something-great-is-about-to-happen\/\">August 13, 2026<\/a>; cf. Luke 17:26-20<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, the Lord advises what our disposition ought to be \u2014 not anxiety but one of trust, abandonment, and praise, knowing that <em>&#8220;He protects, guides, and fills [the soul] with&#8230; all the grace it needs,&#8221;<\/em> so long as we <em>&#8220;believe&#8221;<\/em> and <em>&#8220;have faith when all seems lost.&#8221; <\/em>Yes, when all seems lost \u2014 just as it was at Christ&#8217;s tomb. For, as it says in the Catechism:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'trebuchet ms', geneva, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong><span class=\"text\">The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><em>\u2014Catechism of the Catholic Church, <\/em>677<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So, dear reader, look around you, see for yourself what is unfolding in real time.
